Logitech serves one-billionth mouse
Look, we're not going to go and get all sappy about Logitech shipping it's billionth mouse. After all, we still prefer our fingers for pointing and keyboards for quick navigation around the ol' computer. Still, a claim of one billion served is always notable, be it computer peripherals or hamburgers. Logitech's very first mouse was the Logitech P4 introduced in 1982. For the very first mouse ever, you'll have to contact Douglas Engelbart, its inventor. Or just click on over the break for pics of the P4 and Engelbarts original toothless sawblade.

Sneakz @ Dec 3rd 2008 8:24AM
Ha, I have 4 of the 1 000 000 000!
Tarnation @ Dec 3rd 2008 8:46AM
I have 6 Mice and 4 keyboards. No speakers strangely or webcams. I used to buy logitech headsets until I found the Microsoft Life Chat 6000
Troels C @ Dec 3rd 2008 9:12AM
I have the rest.
Marcus @ Dec 3rd 2008 9:21AM
I have keyboard and z-5400 5.1 THX speakers. Really solid products.
Bobs @ Dec 3rd 2008 10:41AM

Doug @ Dec 3rd 2008 12:09PM
It's in the Canadian criminal code, eh. Like there's legal president set in cases in law. So you gotta give us our free beer.
without1username @ Dec 3rd 2008 12:44PM
I have Z10 speakers and love them! Waiting for my first Logitech mouse now.
Kamokazi @ Dec 3rd 2008 1:13PM
Oh let's get started here...
G7, G15, z-5500, z-2300, MX Revolution, VX Revolution, s510 w/ remote, DiNovo Edge, MX Air, Harmony One, MX610, Cordless Comfort Set, Cordless Optical Mouse, another cordless mouse i can't remember, MX700, and I'm sure I missed a couple.
UnixSystemsEngineer @ Dec 3rd 2008 1:24PM
Got an MX Revolution and an MX1000. Gotta say, I like the MX1000 better. The MX Revo's stupid speedshift wheel sucks in both modes.
NHAnimator @ Dec 3rd 2008 2:33PM
"I like found a mouse in a blottle eh, and I hear when that happens you like, get a free beer, eh"
Only in the Great White North.
Willie Ha @ Dec 9th 2008 5:51PM
I actually won the z5 speakers from them...
shanoboy @ Dec 3rd 2008 8:19AM
Is there actually another company out there that makes mice and keyboards? :P
iEye @ Dec 3rd 2008 8:31AM
BenQ makes a nice wireless set...
And I just realized that my 2.1 speakers are in fact... Logitech, these guys are quietly taking over my desk!
Josh @ Dec 3rd 2008 9:04AM
My keyboard is a Cherry - they're superb.
Mouse is a wireless logitech though :)
Don't get logitech speakers though, the sound is really muddy and the bass just drowns everything out. Even the 2.1's i "borrowed" (yeah like she needs a subwoofer) from my mum's Dell were better.
bhtooefr @ Dec 3rd 2008 9:04AM
Microsoft (although I believe they contract that manufacturing out, and in the past some of their mice were made by Logitech) does...
Also, Unicomp actually makes their own keyboards with built in pointing sticks or trackballs, in a factory in Lexington, KY.
shanoboy @ Dec 3rd 2008 9:07AM
Sorry guys, I was just kidding. I realize that there are other mouse manufacturers out there.
I was simply commenting on their ubiquity. Personally, I really love the MS offerings in mice.
Patriks7 @ Dec 3rd 2008 11:06AM
Oh yeah definitely..
Art Lebedev makes awesome and affor...
Sorry, neve rmind.
Joe Dombrowski @ Dec 3rd 2008 11:31AM
Josh: You know you can turn down the subs... All the systems I've heard are just fine, and are easy competition for the Klipsch sets that I used to have!
At this point I have their high end 5.1 system at work, and a 4.1 system at home. Mice (Currently): 1 cordless freedom, 2 MX Revolutions, 3 LX 710s. Keyboards: 1 Cordless Freedom, 3 LX 710s. I've always been extremely happy with their products, and they do make the best mice.
maveric101 @ Dec 3rd 2008 2:53PM
agreed, MS mice are nice.
also, 2 iEye highest ranked's and 1 CLACK highest ranked in 1 post! if Fusion got a highest ranked in here i would fear the apocalypse.
xValentine @ Dec 3rd 2008 7:50PM
Razer
SteelSeries
Logitech
If you like "quality" gaming mouse, then those 3 are in the top IMO.
Although I'm using a Logitech MX Revolution.
Best f'ing mouse.
f3rg @ Dec 3rd 2008 8:23AM
They make great mice, but I'm still pissed they left me hanging when I (briefly) switched to Vista, only to find they refused to update some older mouse drivers.
OCEAN 'CLAK' 20th @ Dec 3rd 2008 8:24AM
ill have 3 large fries, and 2 mice with that big mac,
Nevets @ Dec 3rd 2008 8:27AM
Well, without "iEye" they would have made that billion ;)
Going to click add comment with my logitech mouse now....
orbital @ Dec 3rd 2008 8:29AM
wow, that first mouse is so pre-steampunk. they should release it as a 1,000,000,000th collectors edition.
Macca @ Dec 3rd 2008 8:32AM
Ah, ergonomics at its best.
Tom Robertson @ Dec 3rd 2008 8:33AM
Yeah I think my desk is swamped with Logitech peripherals... Webcam, keyboard, mouse and speakers!
Danny @ Dec 3rd 2008 8:37AM
What puzzles me is why they haven't created a mouse that will be utilized by my manhood while I watch n0rp for a more realistic viewing experience.
John Bailey @ Dec 4th 2008 7:33AM
Perhaps because they can't make one that small.
Danny @ Dec 3rd 2008 8:45AM
Little do you know, you probably get 2 mice with your big mac... just the rodent kind.
Peter Zich @ Dec 3rd 2008 8:50AM
I think someone could have spent just a bit more time covering up the mcdonalds text...
HazMatt @ Dec 3rd 2008 10:01AM
Yeah, I noticed that too, although I kind of thought it was a "special effect".
TREX6662k5 @ Dec 3rd 2008 10:15AM
Made in Paint (TM)
maxter @ Dec 3rd 2008 11:29AM
Eyedropper anyone?
engadget.mlc @ Dec 3rd 2008 4:30PM
Did anyone else look at this and think about mice being in McDonald's hamburgers?
Fred @ Dec 3rd 2008 8:58AM
I wonder if Thomas would've still preferred "his fingers for pointing and keyboards for quick navigation" if it was Apple that sold their billionth mouse...
Vianon @ Dec 3rd 2008 9:10AM
Always went with Logitech, and guess what: i'm lovin' it!
AMiSH PiRATE @ Dec 3rd 2008 9:18AM
can anyone tell if the logitech p4 is three buttoned? Looks that way.
Benson @ Dec 3rd 2008 12:36PM
Well, it's a Logitech, so it's a pretty good bet it's three-button. Back in the day, Microsoft mice were two-button, Apple mice were one-button, and practically everything else were three-button... Besides, as you point out, it has three very buttonesque things on the front edge, and it would be totally weird to have fake buttons on their first mouse release.
JSM @ Dec 3rd 2008 9:19AM
And yet they still refuse to update the trackman - a few more buttons, better tracking, new materials, refined design - not too much to ask for after 10 years but logitech prefers to see its' long time customers as a nuisance, not an asset. Yes, I have had many logitech peripherals over the years, but not an ounce of loyalty, because they have shown none. The second someone comes out with a better product in any area that I use theirs, I will switch without a second thought.
The squeezebox is a great example, I'm going with an itunes/touch/airport combo instead (even though I don't use a mac) of sb, because I know I can count on apple to continually update the product , while I expect logitech to milk the original sb dry and then go on to something different as they have again, and again and again.
Fine engineers, crap management.
Freestyle Farfetchd @ Dec 3rd 2008 9:22AM
Hang on here, are we upranking Clak?
Freestyle Farfetchd @ Dec 3rd 2008 9:24AM
Oops, you can't reply to Clak.
Macca @ Dec 3rd 2008 9:24AM
Bah, the whole time since I've read this article I've been thinking "Logitech, meh, they're overpriced and I don't really care for them", and just now I realise that I'm using a Logitech Deluxe 250 keyboard and mouse.
spundot @ Dec 3rd 2008 9:26AM
to go along with the announcement, they should start a recycling program so they don't add to the 900 million mice they've contributed to our landfills.
ugotamesij @ Dec 3rd 2008 9:27AM
I posted this story to Engadget too. If you find the one billionth mouse, Logitech will give you $1k.
See the bottom of this article: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7751627.stm
Esat Dedezade @ Dec 3rd 2008 9:29AM
Both iEye and Clak are high ranked?

wesg @ Dec 3rd 2008 9:40AM
You never know, at McDonalds you just might get that mouse.
wesg @ Dec 3rd 2008 9:43AM
Why can't I reply to the one comment I wanted to?
MohammadAG @ Dec 3rd 2008 12:39PM
It's called the ****** Engadget comment system, you'll get used to it
Luke D @ Dec 3rd 2008 9:45AM
Would you like that served on a wireless keyboard?
