Buffalo's wireless injunction stayed, now free to sell WiFi products in US
Man, we can bet there's some serious celebrating going on at the Buffalo offices today. After being barred from selling its networking gear here in America last June, Buffalo has finally been freed from its CSIRO-given chains. Who's to thank? A federal judge who has stayed the permanent injunction in the ongoing US patent litigation, which opens the doors for the company to sell "IEEE 802.11a, 802.11g and 802.11n compliant products in the United States." Finally, we USers can look forward to buying helicopter inspired routers on our home turf.

Does it fly?
I hope it flies.
Well, it's got antennae like helicopter rotors, so with a bit of luck... *crosses fingers*
Nope but it's great for blending fruit smoothies.
If it did, would those be buffalo wings?
The blades spin to capture all the bandwidths!
If it flies, I buy
That thing looks like it's gonna bite me...
Looks like a land mine.
My first thought too, Freakin!
Looks like a "Bouncing Betty": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bouncing_Betty
But does it blend? All it needs is some sort of glass case and it would best any blendtech blender.
We bought a buffalo router off ebay for our house and when we had to get service on our internet both the person who came to our house and the person who tried to help on the phone had never even heard of Buffalo.
"What kind of router do you have?"
"Buffalo"
"What? It should be Netgear, or Linksys...?"
Maybe this will help Buffalo's rep in the states, I've been very happy with our router and it would've been nice to find one locally instead of on ebay...
Is its range good? I am looking for one that can cover my whole house. Right now we have 5 Apple airports around the house and there are still places we don't get wifi
I have not tried it, but I have heard great reviews about the G router with it's built in amplifier. And its supposed to only get better with DD-WRT firmware loaded. I have been looking forward to trying this for a long time.
How big is your house man,
That or apple made a bad product, WHAT, that can't be true or can it??????
on a diffrent note, if you get rid of some routers it could open up the area, if there is no signal in some area's it could be that the signals are blocking each other.
And before any one says thats BS, this was the case in my work, the tech guy thought that more routers would solve the problem, it just made it worse. Just possition them better.
I have the wireless N finity router, in my house, my neighbors 1 block over are always trying to get on it, and through 4 walls i have max signal, id say its good
That's one freaky looking antenna.
But I like it
Buffalo was sold and highly promoted in Comp USA stores, before Comp USA's sorry-azz management took them under.
Ya, last year i got a usb wifi dongle. I dont use the dongle at home, but when i got to lan partys i use it. Once, soon after I got a new computer, and didnt have the driver installed, i went to a lan party, and when i looked on the buffallo site, i couldnt find any drivers! I had to run home and grab the cd with drivers (which took a lot to find). I dont know why they had to take down the drivers and all information about the wireless stuff.
I love my buffalo router and I also have one of thier wireless hubs also....both wok great. Buffalo also seamlessly connects with Nintedo DS using the AOSS. In fact I believe buffalo makes all the nintendo wifi dongles.
This is great news as I was wanting another wireless hub from them...
Huzzah! I love buffalo routers
I love buffalo wings!!!
I. LOVE. THIS. COMPANYYYYYYEEAAAHAHHH!1¡¹!
Buffalo is fantastic, they made/make the best consumer-level routers I've ever used.
No Kidding. They're cheap and very reliable.
/agree+++
I still have an WHR-HP54 as my router/dhcp/802.11g and it has been a champ for 3 years at least.. Even after I upgraded my home LAN to 802.11n via Airport Extreme base stations, I'm using the Buffalo as it's stable, allows me to go 5GHz N-only on the AEBSs, and has the MAC address of the Powerbook I used to authenticate with Commiecast (which has since been torn to shreds).
Looking forward to firmware updates!
I have that same router and it rocks! one of the best routers i have ever had (no dd-wrt on my version though) but it has most of the advanced features. Its my understading that the creator of dd-wrt has paired with buffalo, i am very pleased with the product.
One day we had a lighting storm and my router died, i sent it back, and they gave me a brand new router, no problem
This may be good stuff, but NOBODY should have the right to sell something that fugly.
As long as it isn't hurting anybody people have the right to sell whatever the hell they want. If you don't like it don't buy it.
Yay, Buffalo routers combined with a custom firmware made for some affordable and remarkably stable consumer level routers. Would someone please tell the author of Tomato we want Wireless N support?
Looks like some sort of miniature teleportation device
Commander Keen FTW
I should load it up again in dosbox one of these days, so many childhood memories...
You mean to tell me there's a way to play games like Commander Keen and Raptor and OMF 2099 on the new-fangled computers of today?
Teach me.
I own several Buffalo routers and won't buy anything else. Full DD-WRT support and a better price than Linksys = I'm Sold. For those asking, I have a 2000 SF 2 story house and can get very good coverage throughout. Even my neighbor can hit it. A very good product, this is good news for Buffalo, glad to hear it.
Definitely. Two summers ago, I was shopping for a router that would run OpenWrt or Tomato. On Newegg, there was a Buffalo with AOSS, draft N, certified Nintendo WiFi, and with excelent custom firmware support for just $55. It had customer's choice awards and five stars, just outstanding for the price. The next cheapest router capable of custom firmware was the Linksys WRT54GL, at $85. That was twenty-five bucks more for a router with none of the extra features the Buffalo had. Also, the Buffalo was smaller and came with a wall mounting bracket; it also looked good, unlike that Linksys in indigo with four legs.
Good. I've been in the market for a new router and Buff makes some really good stuff.
This is great news, they made some of the better routers that were supported by DD-WRT.
Ooh, it looks like I could buy one with dd-wrt preinstalled....
That's something I'll have to consider..
I hate patent trolls. I say that if your not selling a product based on your patents then you can't get an
injunction on someone who is. You can only impose a "reasonable" license fee.
I'm not sure the CSIRO counts as a patent troll!!
That is the leading government sponsored research body of Australia!!
Then why would they take issue with what buffalo is selling in the US?
Hmmmm, their trolling for bucks!
The CSIRO has no wish for a permanent injunction. It will want to licence the patent, if it is upheld. Buffalo is disputing the applicability and/or validity of the patent.
Curiously, while the CSIRO unsurprisingly (as an Australian government agency) holds Australian patents for the same technologies, it has no litigation on foot there (to my knowledge).
hornetfig, regardless of whatever rights or claims CSIRO may have with respect to their patent, until the patent is actually upheld it is ridiculous (and quite frankly criminal IMO) to stop another company from selling products that allegedly infringe on your unverified patent.
Until the patent review is finished and the determination is made then it is stupid to act is if the patent is valid! This is a little like someone being charged with murder and then put on death row until the determination is made as to whether they actually committed the crime or not!
Besides, in today's world of absurd and crazy patents it would behoove everyone to judge the situation AFTER the patent review process is completed.
REJOICE!!!!!!!!!! Welcome back, Buffalo.
Buffalo makes rock solid routers, way better than Linksys and/or Netgear
I get the itch every once in awhile to buy new routers (Netgear N, Linksys N, Linksys VPN N, Apple Extreme N) but always end up going back to my Buffalo
This thing work work under any condition (WoW + torrents + youtube + HD stream across PCs)
I love Buffalo routers. I have three, as well as a plethora of other devices. My 802.11g stuff is all based on the Broadcom chipset, same that's in the old Linksys stuff. Extremely reliable routers, and even the 802.11g streams video content through wireless bridging.
...And now Your Highness, we will discuss the location of your hidden Rebel. base...
wowowowowowowowowowowow....
Yes! For those who don't know, Buffalo makes (or at least did the last time they were commonly available in the States) the absolute best wireless routers for home use.
They don't have garbage "features" like browser hi-jacking. They just work. With amazing stability. Even the stock firmware is great. If you need advanced features, just flash them with tomato or DD-WRT.
Their products are an incredible breathe of fresh air after struggling with garbage from d-link or linksys, or belkin.
Thank goodness they are back.
Like someone else said, Buffalo makes some of the best consumer routers. I have one at home and it works perfectly.
No more junk from D-Link, Linksys or Belkin. Been there, done that.
Any relation to Buffalo Chips?
Think they'll take my Motorola or Netgear in trade?
On a more serious note, aside from the generalizations of "I love Buffalo," what, precisely makes their products better?
Advanced features like MIMO, ability to be flashed with 3rd party firmware, chipset doesn't overheat under high traffic like the junky routers from the "big" companies, quality antennas and radios -- and all of this at about 30% less cost.
Also, they look like professional equipment, not like toys (Linksys) or Mac wannabees (Netgear).
