Gartner's latest and greatest analysis of the global smartphone industry is in, and there are quite a few interesting nuggets tucked within all those percentages. For starters, the sector still managed to grow 11.5% in Q3 2008 compared to a year prior, but that increase is the smallest since it began tracking. Of course, given the current economic climate, we'd say it's a win to see any number not in the negative. Moving on, we see Nokia
maintaining its numero uno status with 42.4% market share, though it did recognize a rare decline in sales of 3% year-on-year; as for RIM, its BlackBerry phone sales increased an amazing 81.7% in Q3. We're also clued in to why Apple was rumored to be
hacking its iPhone production some 40% in Q4, as the company has some two million units of inventory built up in the supply channel. Finally, we're told that "for the first time (meaning in this quarter), iPhone sales exceeded sales of Microsoft Windows Mobile devices worldwide and in North America," and beyond that, "open-source initiatives like Android and Symbian Foundation [are set to] challenge Windows Mobile's licensing model in the short-term." Need we really reiterate how badly
WinMo 7 is needed?
Kenc29 - can you give me a source for that information?
Engadget's article says something entirely different -> http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/03/nokia-could-give-linux-a-spin-in-high-end-mobiles/
One of the Vice Presidents (not the CEO) said that Linux will become a serious alternative to Symbian in the future. Alternative NOT replacement.
Please get your facts right before posting.
Nokia isn't going to kill S60. The low end phones still use S40, and the low end hardware get's more CPU power every year so more of them will be able to move to S60. If Nokia is going to kill something, it's S40.
S40 is Nokia only operating system. Now that Symbians going for free theres no cost advantage from the licensing, only from cheaper hardware. We might even get 'S50', a cutdown version of S60. That might give Nokia some costsavings in the long run. S60 will stay a long loooong time.
This is a good thing. Though I don't own an iphone or plan on it I am glad for what they have done to the market as far as UI is concerned. I'm so stoked about the N97 and I'm sure Apple played a part in it. I don't think windows will be able to compete until 7 hits but maybe 6.5 will be better than anyone expects. Here's to competition
@iEye
I'm still laughing at
-A2DP-
Apple cares about its customers, and does not want the iPhone stolen, the best way is to make sure that it is always secured while in iPod use through a wired earphone set..
Right cause if i had wireless headphones my iPhone would be less safe zipped up in my pocket ? Whereas even if i put it in my inside pocket someone just needs to yank the headphones painfully hard to flip it into their hands.
I don't think you'll be writing copy for Apple quite yet...
Ok who are you? and what have you done with the real iEye?!
I'm amazed to say this .. but I agree completely with "This just reaffirms my lengthy speculations...
-That most people who buy a smartphone don't really need, or do not use it for work, it is just for show.
-Same principal goes for teenie boppers with blackberries...
You have to admit that Apple has tapped into a obviously hidden market, the vain and stupid..."
/me calls up hell .. "yeah .. okay .. getting a little chilly down there huh? .. well now "
