Android 1.0 gets ported to the Nokia N810

We've already seen a pre-release version of Android ported to the Nokia N810, but the folks at Linux consulting firm NthCode have now finally taken things to their logical conclusion and finagled version 1.0 of the OS onto the handheld and, best of all, they've described the entire process in minute detail. While the OS itself more or less works, they apparently still have quite a ways to go, as the device is currently not able to do some little tasks like run applications, charge the battery, or access the internet. But, hey, it's Android on an N810, we're not about to get picky. Head on past the break for a video, and hit up the link below for the complete details.

Damn, I've been waiting a while for this!
I haven't used my N810 in so long!

'i' am waiting for them to port apples iphone OS
eggothewaffle @ Dec 5th 2008 6:48PM
But why would you want to lose the capability to copy and paste and multitask?
T-Bone @ Dec 5th 2008 6:55PM
It sounds like you still can't really use it!
anodynewake @ Dec 5th 2008 6:42PM
What is that... a 40-second boot time?
y3k.nik @ Dec 5th 2008 6:48PM
Actually to be honest, I think its better than most smart phones out there!
eggothewaffle @ Dec 5th 2008 6:56PM
Considering it's booting up the Nokia low level stuff and then booting into Android, that actually is pretty impressive.
I mean, googling around for iPhone 3g boot times show it takes about a minute.
Ron @ Dec 5th 2008 9:46PM
40 seconds is much better than the 4 minutes my BB Curve takes...
KarlW @ Dec 5th 2008 6:51PM
Cool project. Let's hope some of Nokia's more recent mobiles get the same treatment. Make a step up from Symbian, anyway.
Sarig @ Dec 5th 2008 7:39PM
My n-95 boots in ca 10 seconds. Not that it really ever needs reboots.
How's other smartphone platforms doing?
I'm not sure if I see what's so bad about Symbian here...
Totesen @ Dec 5th 2008 9:06PM
The Internet tablets N800 and n810 RUN MAEMO, NOT SYMBIAN
Sarig @ Dec 5th 2008 10:37PM
Totesen, we're talking about Nokia's phones here, not the internet tables. Go easy on the caps-lock, it's not really cruise-control for cool.
tpadekar @ Dec 5th 2008 7:03PM
I hope they get more stuff going on the N810!
I'd love to see Android be used in more places outside of the mobile phone stage! I think this could potentially evolve into a single solution for all devices, leading to a unified environment of operation!
patsy @ Dec 5th 2008 7:24PM
Yeah, just like happened on the desktop. Oh, wait...
Seriously, though, the more I use my G1 the more I love Android. Far from perfect yet, but it's just got so much potential, and at such a fragile young age. The main thing needing a serious solution on the G1 is the battery life. Considering the relatively large size of the phone, I just don't get why HTC didn't put in a battery twice the current size.

All Nokia had to do was make the N810 a phone and they could have cut into some of Apple's share.
klgustaveson @ Dec 5th 2008 7:46PM
I would PAY for that!
Andrew @ Dec 5th 2008 8:13PM
Does this mean it can come to the likes of N85, N96, N97??? Please say YES
Fernando @ Dec 5th 2008 10:12PM
No.
Ayle @ Dec 5th 2008 10:35PM
Maemo =! Symbian
JonnyBongo @ Dec 5th 2008 9:14PM
We've already seen a concept design of a steam turbine put into a Chevy Volt, but the folks at Car and Driver magazine have now finally taken things to their logical conclusion and finagled a V-8 into the chassis and, best of all, they've described the entire process in minute detail. While the engine itself more or less turns on, they apparently still have quite a ways to go, as the car is currently not able to do some little tasks like drive around the block, charge the battery, or close the hood. But hey, it's a V-8 in a Chevy Volt, and we're not about to get picky.

Without people doing experiments and research like this, we wouldn't move forward.
I salute them for their accomplishment, no matter how futile.
Bad example, but an example nonetheless: The hacks for the Wii started out as a simple way to crash the console and when it crashed, display a simple set of values (accelerometer data, etc...). Completely pointless in itself, but proof that it was possible maybe to do more.

Nice to see an N810 being used for...something.
Mine became unbearable.

Any hope for Android being ported to old HTC Windows Mobile phones.....?
Justin Maldonado @ Dec 8th 2008 11:26AM
Its already ported to the HTC Touch (vogue only). The only thing that isn't working on the Touch is GPS, and bluetooth, as well as a few software compatibility bugs. Much more progress than this project, and we've been on 1.0 since a day after it came out.
