Microsoft to push cool factor with retro-inspired clothing line
It's actually kind of amazing how much dough Microsoft has spent over the past little while in an attempt to polish its image in the minds of the general populace, and as if those "I'm proud to be a PC" and completely incomprehensible Gates / Seinfeld spots weren't enough, the Redmond-based outfit is about to roll out its own clothing line (dubbed "Softwear") this month. And no, we're not kidding. Not even a little. Microsoft has purchased the assistance of Crispin Porter & Bogusky in order to ensure the results are actually desirable, and it has also hired rapper Common as a spokesman. We can't definitively say the shirt you see above is as fly as Pharrell's Gizmondo Enzo tee, but we'd rock it. We'd rock it hard.

This makes the inner nerd in me weep with joy.
Must. Have.
Despite the shameless begging for attention from Microsoft I would totally throw that thing on.
I think there's a typo in this post headline.
Shouldn't it be "Microsoft to push tool factor?"
BTW, you'd think the automatic grammar check would point out that "cool" and "Microsoft" aren't grammatically correct when contained within the same sentence.
In for a penny, in for a pound. Want.
That's because DOS is the best operating system Microsoft ever did (and that's telling).
What about this.
http://www.slipperybrick.com/2008/06/blue-screen-of-death-t-shirt/
Yeah. I'd be a bit embarrassed to wear a microsoft shirt. but damn that looks geeky good.
@Kris120890
I'm sorry, but I don't see any text in the picture :p more like damn big boobies ^_^ xD
i have no inner nerd. i'm all nerd.
Sorry, you're right. Windows 1.0 was slightly better.
Wow, I'd totally wear that also, such an awesome nerd shirt it's unbelievable.
Oops... That wasn't even an OS. Back to DOS, then.
(Low-rank me if you are a MS-brainwashed zombie).
Notice there's no women's version
Firewall red?
actual website: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/softwearbymicrosoft/default.aspx
@giuliop
You do realize that Microsoft didn't even make DOS, right?
@ giuliop: Just because Windows is too complicated for you doesn't make it a bad OS.
*Insert Blue Shirt of Death joke here*
The back features the, um, blue silk-screen of death?
I think the blue looks like just about the same color as the background of your "highest ranking"
In that case, J-Rad, Engadget could sue Microsoft.
Engadget should patent the color: #D8F0FB .
Damn you guys beat me to the BSOD jokes...
Blue Shirt Of Death
Dun Dun Dunnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
I'd buy it.
I think you meant "dubbed 'Softwear'", not Software.
Darren Murph, didn't your mother ever tell you that spanking the monkey(Ballmer) would make you go blind?
I'd buy it too, the shirt is kind of cool but I don't know, might have been cooler if it wasn't made by Microsoft. Because it just feel like your parent trying to be hip when you were young...
wow, I like it. Lets hope they don't go crazy with the abstract shapes an concepts ala threadless. Simple designs like this are nicer.
Is that shirt using Helvetica rather than Arial? The audacity.
Between this and the video of the Apple Store opening in Munich I might be ready to give up computers...
http://apple20.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2008/12/06/apples-munich-opening-is-mobbed-in-fullscreen-panorama/
I meant that as a general comment, not a reply to willxcore :)
It looks like it says "Softwear."
...for soft guy.
@chickenator
That's what she said.
Desperate times call for desperate measures i guess :P
I wish I was as "desperate" as Microsoft.
Yeah, something tells me things are going to get real _tough_ for the guys at microsoft...
Id get one if they are prices descently. Whats wrong with a company "reinventing" itself? Stop hating and get on board people!
The problem is that they're only reinventing their outer image, just like when they came out with Vista. The potential BSOD still lies at their heart.
@Who?: The BSOD is always a driver/hardware problem these days. I haven't seen a BSOD since Windows XP, and I'm on Vista now.
I'm up for a "Bill Gates is my homeboy" T-Shirt!
why are me amazed with ad spending, when there is a apple commercial every 10 minutes?
theres even the apple commercial that berates MS for spending money on advertising when it should be using it to fix all of Vista's "problems." like OSX doesn't have problems of its own.
Maveric,
OSX isn't perfect, but it gets pretty damn close.
Ooooooohhh!
haha
good one
:-|
in 20 years i can totally see microsfot being a clothing company and have nothing to do with electronics or software at all
And I can see that you need to renew your prescription.
C:\DOS
C:\DOS\RUN
RUN\DOS\RUN
I wish I could rank you higher than highest rank. That's brilliant.
That was a shirt that the comic-book guy was wearing in an episode of the simpsons... give credit where credit is due...
Wor-
oops.
Best. Shirt design. Ever.
I wonder what Engadget's article would be like if Apple started selling clothes...
What do you mean, "article"? I think that would call for "articleS", one per cloth. Yes, even the iSocks. One port for the left one, one for the right, that is.
And a 3-month banner ad for "iTee - the only review you'll ever need", obviously.
If Apple were scrambling to repair a tarnished corporate image they'd probably start selling these again:
http://www.macmothership.com/gallery/GiftCatalog/GiftCatalog_page4.jpg
Getting gay with Apple!!!
There have been reports on Engadget about the oh so dreamy outfits worn by Dear Leader:
http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/17/steve-jobs-arrives-in-london-jeans-turtleneck-and-new-balance/
It would probably turn into number one fashion items for the Gay Community!
Fascinating. What if Apple sold clothes? What would they be like?
They wouldn't have buttons, we know that much already.
Apple does make shirts with Apple logos, as well as Apple iPod socks. Funny that nobody here already knows that...
I'd bust a gut laughing if the two top competitor companies start selling clothes with their software logos!
@Decoy actually the would have ONE button ...
@cb88 and Decoy
It would actually have four (unless we aren't counting power and volume buttons?)
Definitely for the outer nerd
@Decoy
MagSafe Buttons
@Dubb
Wow. That... no. I'm not even... no. What?
They'd have non-standard sleeve & neck openings, jackets without zippers and pockets, and come with a glossy coating that blinds everyone in a 5-mile radius.
@ Darren
That guy has the pedosmile.
I mean, look at where his hand is heading towards.
@ Darren:
But if you buy those Apple shirts, you could "Be the Apple of everyone's eyes" !
As others have also noticed, it's "Softwear", not "Software".
I don't think it'll work. My memories of those early MS-DOS 5.0 and Windows 3.0 days are ones of pain and frustration, mixed with a little sad nostalgia for my old Apple //e.
Are you kidding? DOS 5.0 was a great upgrade.
I must be some kind of super genius because I can comprehend the Gates/Seinfeld ads. I feel sorry for those too dim to do so.
Yeah. Like, the shoes represent common denominator products in a global marketplace, and the churros like totally represent tiny competitors and software developers (what are they doing with the churros? They are EATING them)
Microsoft have spawned some kind of interpretation thing, prompting people to blog their solutions to cryptic moves like the Seinfeld ads and the mysterious origin myth of the number 7 in Windows 7.
I LOVED those ads. I'm totally an Apple guy 100%. But those ads were AMAZING.
I wish they did more. They actually worked too. I really don't respond to advertisement of any sort. I mostly hate them and no matter what it is I usually think to myself, "wow, I'll never by one of those now". But after seeing those Seinfeld/Gates ads, I actually felt like buying Vista... to install on my Mac.
MORE!
Impressive. You just called over half of the people on Engadget dim, and got a high rank. I'm flummoxed.
It's because if you rank him up you get to feel like you're included in the smart minority.
@who:
And no, you don't get to be included in the smart minority for using the word "flummoxed".
@anebg
You had to look it up to know what it meant, didn't you? Ha!
Careful about your clothes crashing
Next thing you know you got holes where people can see all your "information"
You're so right.
You, sir, are a genius.
Maybe they can sell a sweater dubbed 'firewall'?
They dont keep crashing, its just bad publicity... =P
imagine softwears collection for 09 autumn/fall with windows 7
I have to say, those shirts are surprisingly good looking. As much as I don't need any more t-shirts with stuff silk-screened on it, I'd rock that DOS shirt.
nerd inside me wants a couple of these shirts.. must resist... girlfriend... will make fun. of meeeeeeeee
I think Microsoft is starting to know it's own strengths and weaknesses. It has a bit of geek chic, so why not. They're always trying to be that weird business/culture mashup that only ever appears in parties imagined in the minds of marketers. Must've been a few good promotions.
Apple gave away OS X t-shirts to people who bought from the developer's store a few years back. MS should do the same.
I'd wear it if I could get it in a color other than Douchebag Pastel Blue
Maybe they could make it in pink for all of the girls you'll attract wearing this... heh.
Did you seriously just try to make fun of the color Light/Sky/Pastel-Blue by calling it "douchebag"?
Hah.

@ Decoy Now that's a shirt I'd buy.
My other favourite DOS days memory:
(I hope someone knows the accurate text if this one)
CRC error on diskette 14/32
restore cancelled
They should make a shirt taking a dig on Mac OS 8 or 9. I'd rock that for the extra ironic look while browsing teh int0rweb on my macbook pro while drinking a tall starbucks mocha.
(and yes I'm serious, I really like the MS DOS shirt)
This is like Pontiac putting out a shirt for the Aztec. Look, MS-DOS is and was crap. The fact that millions of people were subjected to using for so many years after it was rendered obsolete by Apple's Macintosh does not qualify it as "classic" or "cool" by any stretch of the imagination.
"... after it was rendered obsolete by Apple's Macintosh ..."
That must be why FreeDOS is being developed actively since 14 years.
I hope the slogan's something like:
Microsoft softwear, files aren't the only things we zip.
Where are my solitaire shirts?
Computers? on MY t-shirts?
Its more likely than you think
