HP and ASU demo bendable, unbreakable electronic displays
Well, what do you know? Nearly four years after Arizona State University opened its very own flexible display center comes this, a prototype device that's purportedly easy to manufactur, easy on the environment and practically as strong as Thor. HP and ASU have teamed up to demonstrate the fresh e-displays, which are constructed almost entirely of plastic and consume far less power than traditional computer monitors. The "unbreakable displays" were crafted using self-aligned imprint lithography (SAIL) technology invented in HP Labs, and while we'd love to see this in a pliable laptop at CES 2009, we suspect it'll be a few years yet before these slither out to the commercial realm.
Update: HP Labs pinged us with this tidbit on the image above. "This image from the Flexible Display Center at ASU represents what the flexible display, a paper-like computer display made entirely of plastic, could look like in the future."

Are we going back to the scroll ages?
When e-readers get this for a display, then I'll get an e-reader.
How long until these are turned into touchscreen, and a cellphone (or laptop screen) is nothing more than a few millimeters thick?
I know nobody ever watched this show - but I think this could make the communications device from Gene Roddenberry's 'Earth: Final Conflict' a reality. Here's a web site for those of you unfamiliar with the show... http://scifipedia.scifi.com/index.php/Earth:_Final_Conflict . Basically it was a device that was fairly small - that could open (kinda like a paper scroll - but the 'wheels' would have been on the inside) to show a larger screen. That way you get an easy to use/see large screen that fits easily in your pocket. Anyway - just thought it was a cool element of the show back then.
Yes, I was thinking of the Global of Earth Final Conflict too :)
Andromeda also had similar devices, though they just looked like painted projector transparencies.
This way I can wear my Facebook page on my chest!
We are getting another step closer to :

This!
Awesome!
Unbreakable? I have a 3 year old who could probably challenge that.
I really like where this is going.. one day everyone will be just carrying around a display like that, from which they will have every newspaper needed and there will be a touchscreen one for students to take notes on.. imagine all the paper saved..
Yeah, now the managers can view the document exactly as it would look on a sheet of paper before they print it out to read it!
I'm curious how long it will take for a company to completely defeat the purpose of something like this and use it to make books.
Unbreakable...until sold at Best Buy and customer return them.
I want large sheets of this. A big screen TV I can roll up. A poster presentation with animation that I can fiddle with during a conference (and say good bye to that expensive, pain in the a** printer). Sooo many possibilities...
I want some wallpaper made of this!
Can you imagine how many people will require medical attention with e-paper-cuts?
cool
A wrap around screen for computer games? So you can see the environment in your peripheral. It would make for a much more immersive experience.
I like it!
Now we can watch tv on our toilet paper!
