Maemo 5 OS gets pre-alpha release, specs beyond your wildest imaginings
We've known since September that Nokia's next round of Internet Tablets would be using Maemo 5 OS, and now that the SDK is out we've got some more details for you. The 100 percent open source, pre-alpha release features a new kernel, new components, and supports cellular data connectivity, hi-def cameras, hardware-based graphic acceleration and OMAP3. In addition to all that, the Maemo Community reports that a soon-to-be revamped UI and a new multimedia framework (called "Midas") are in the works. Exciting, no? If you really want to get your hands dirty, hit the read link and soak in all the geeky detail.Update: As some commenters (and a tipster) have pointed out, Midas is the new multimedia framework, not Ohm. Thanks for the heads-up!

I really liked Maemo when I had a N810. To bad it was useless with the recent explosion of great smartphones.

I wonder what affect this will have on - or how it will be affected by - Nokia's acquisition of Symbian. I can see Smartphone and Tablet OS's soon becoming the same thing.

As you said N810 is really useless because of this OS they have to find a solution.

Chris, congratulations on figuring that out all by yourself. But I wonder, why state the obvious ?
Benson @ Dec 8th 2008 4:48PM
Actually, it's OHM, the Open Hardware Manager ( http://ohm.freedesktop.org/wiki/ ), and (of course) engadget got it all wrong, as it's got nothing to do with multimedia.

Can't wait!

And doesn't officially run on any hardware. Despite promises of two rounds of support for the N810 they once again kick the end user.

I'm a Nokia N770 user. Imagine how I feel........

Some OMAP3 yummines coming to your direction! Like above, can't wait!

Me likes it precious.

Here's me hoping that S60 gets a similar revamp, not all of it, just add a more modern UI and I'm more than satisfied.
Labrador @ Dec 8th 2008 4:13PM
The problem is you can't have a smooth UI on top of an ancient cooperative multitasking, shared memory excuse for an operating system like S60.
Prolls @ Dec 8th 2008 4:40PM
You seem to know what your talking... Can't understand the hate towards S60 here. I guess as Europeans and Asians are on their own blogs and forums Americans can run free, but S60 got bright future ahead and good change of coming even more dominating than now with big 3 joining to the Symbian Foundation and all making devices for it.
v9.5 isn't even out yet as v9.4 5th edition is just taking S60 to TS. Just check sharps phones running Symbian S60 underneat or screen play that will be part of Symbian Foundation and S60 v9.5.

This mean we're about to see the next round of Nokia Internet Tablets?
Félix @ Dec 8th 2008 2:22PM
It's only pre-alpha don't get exited too soon :)
We'll probably see this new gen of Nokia MID when Cowon release the S9 32Gb in the USA (so 2010) ;)
swisslogo @ Dec 8th 2008 2:39PM
now slap that on the upcoming N97 with a better UI and we have a monster!!!
RemDX @ Dec 8th 2008 3:41PM
@Felix
Thanks for crushing my dreams before Christmas man. Appreciate it!

I've been using meamo since the N700, I donated that one to a relative in the philippines and was going to do the same with my N800. It's ashamed that Nokia let google got out a phone OS first when they were ahead. Now that they own Symbian...what are they going to do with Meamo? I don't understand their plans here. I'm a fan of Symbian and Meamo, but I think me supporting Nokia by buying a new N series every year ends now. I can't afford 3-4 hundred dollar every year for those devices.

Palm is running out of excuses to use Palm OS bloody 5 :) Oh wait, they ran out of excuses 2 years ago...

> a new multimedia framework (called "Ohm")
These are different things: a new multimedia application framework and http://ohm.freedesktop.org/
carlos @ Dec 9th 2008 5:41PM
i just can't wait to see the next n8x0 or n900 or whatever they will call the tablet. I own a n800 and luv it!
Unfortunately the machine's kryptonite seems to not be too good, but if NOKIA says that the next one will
have much more mmedia power.... i am with it!!!!
