Netflix HD streaming comes to TiVo

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION! MOVIES AND TV EPISODES FROM NETFLIX DIRECTLY TO THE TV THROUGH TIVO DVRs AVAILABLE TODAY
Just in Time for the Holidays, Offering Brings Budget Conscious Entertainment to Consumers
ALVISO, Calif. - December 8, 2008 - After announcing a groundbreaking partnership in October with Netflix Inc., TiVo Inc. (NASDAQ: TIVO), the creator of and a leader in television services for digital video recorders (DVRs), today announced that subscribers to both Netflix and TiVo® Series3, TiVo HD, or TiVo HD XL can now access thousands of movies and TV episodes instantly streamed from Netflix directly to their TVs.
The service is being offered at no additional charge to customers who subscribe to both services. This morning subscribers can browse through an expanding library of more than 12,000 movies and TV episodes at www.netflix.com, add them to their Netflix instant Queue, and then watch them on TV with just a click of the TiVo remote. The library includes titles from every genre, with a modest selection of HD content available as well. Both standard and HD titles are expected to grow in the weeks and months ahead.
"With so much talk focusing on the economy these days, this partnership makes more sense than ever because it brings people more movies at home, offering substantially more entertainment options than cable or satellite," said Tara Maitra, GM and Vice President of Content Services at TiVo Inc. "TiVo offers consumers everything they need from just one box. Not only great content from Netflix, but also movies from The Walt Disney Studios and Amazon, music from Rhapsody, videos from YouTube and even pictures from Picasa Web Albums and Photobucket. And that's all in addition to TiVo's core functionality that made us a favorite in the first place. It adds up to a one-of-a-kind value."
"Netflix offers an unbeatable combination of convenience, selection, and value, which now extends to TiVo customers," said Netflix Chief Marketing Officer Leslie Kilgore. This partnership is a win-win-win for Netflix, TiVo, and consumers alike."
Movies are streamed from Netflix through TiVo DVRs via wired or wireless broadband connection and a Netflix Queue-based user interface. Members visit the Netflix Web site to add movies and TV episodes to their individual instant Queues. Those choices will automatically be displayed on subscribers' TVs and are available to watch instantly through the TiVo service. With the TiVo remote control users can browse their instant Queue, make selections right on the TV screen, as well as read synopses and rate movies. In addition, they have the option of pausing, fast-forwarding, rewinding and re-starting whenever they wish.

I would be all over Tivo HD if I were still be able to order my PPV's....
Just keep a basic non-DVR cable box if you really need PPV. Though with some cable systems you can order PPV online or via the phone, so you just need to tune to the right channel to watch.
Soon my friend, soon?

I suspect the eventual series 4s will have this built in as well...
Man, I looked at my TIVO for the link, then noticed the press release was from tomorrow. Bought my Tivo for this feature.
There are rumors that DirecTV will be getting in on the action as well...
Cool, Ive been using Netflix on my 360 and look forward to doing my own comparison between the two implementations.
Beetlejuice!
Beetlejuice!
Beetlejuice!
I basically have the same ability with my computer/xbox360 combo and for less of the price, I'm not sure what the Tivo price is per month, but the $50 XBL Gold membership with free PVR through my computer is far cheaper....it's still exciting that Netflix is expanding their market so that people will be able to use their service for things other than the randomly scratched DVD that requires replacement.
You had to mention the Jaguar... now I'm thinking about digging out one of mine (I own two) and my custom Tempest 2k controller (a real spinner, the only way to play Tempest!)... I haven't set it up since I got my 61" DLP...
Yeah, Tempest 2K on this set... I think I see a great need.

How long before they start streaming HD to the PC?
If you have PlayOn you can watch Netflix, Hulu, CBS, and YouTube through your DirecTV HD PVR. It works pretty well. For Netflix you can watch whatever you have saved in your watch instant queue.
You can also use PlayOn with your Xbox 360 and PS3 and sometime soon the Wii! I use it for the 360 and it works great. Lots more content. The Netflix I really don't use as the Xbox Built in support is better, but for all the CBS programs, and Hulu and youtube, it works great.
I still don't see the appeal. Why do I want to stream great video, and crummy audio? I will still wait for my DVDs to show in the mail or exchange them at my local blockbuster until I can stream surround sound and pay the same price or less then my $2/rental.
I agree to a certain extent. I use netflix to watch Blu-ray movies that I don't feel the need to buy and you won't catch me streaming Dark Night or Iron Man to my Tivo. But for instant access to any episode of any season of The Office, which doesn't have great sound anyway, you can't beat the streaming service.
Tried out last night, it works really nicely. The video and audio quality is very nice.
I just tried it. Quality is great. The presentation isn't as pretty as on the 360 (I have that too) with the slideshow of movies, but it does the job. I also like that you can remove items from your queue on the Tivo.
One thing I noticed, the audio was like .5 seconds out of sync with the video with 2 movies I checked out, one being an HD stream.
Overall, quality was very stable and I'll be using this over my 360 (I don't like firing up the 360 just to watch a movie). Great job Netflix!!!!!!!
I just FYI - Apple TV with Boxee installed is NETFLIX-STREAMING-CAPABLE
A much more versatile solution.
You can also remove movies from your Queue on the XBox 360 easily! I've been firing up my 360 just to watch a Movie since day one of having the Xbox 360. First with DVD and now with streaming Netflix also. Not like it takes very long. Hit my 1 button Play 360 on my Harmony 1000 Remote and go to the Netflix section in a few seconds. As I have a OLD Philips TIVO I can't get all this newer fancy stuff. It has a Lifetime Subscription on it though that's paid for it's self many times over and I can transfer it over to a new TIVO for free any time I want. It's that old because you can't normally do that. TIVO has tried in the past to get me to switch to newer hardware and transfer, but then I'm forever stuck on that new hardware. Waiting for a new HD Tivo with better Cable Card support.
I will say Netflix seems to be going places. They're getting their foot in the door with all these company's before anyone else. I'm all for it. The more people streaming from Netflix, the More popular it gets, the more content they can afford to put up for everyone. The better it gets for all. That also makes it harder for anyone else to compete with them.
With Apple, your locked into their hardware and still paying per movie, and with Netflix it's Unlimited, and your choice for hardware keeps incressing. The Unlimited is the future, not just movies, but Muisc! For example, want ot be stuck with itunes and paying 99 cents per song? Or use the ZUNE with a $15 a month subscription and have Unlimited Music, plus 10 free songs a month to keep even if you quit the service. All the new muisc and old music you want. What's the better deal?!?! MS ZUNE isn't the only device that does this.
Not to mention that you get to deal with the Apple DRM bugs that prevent you from listening to your own music. Or when your hardware dies you get to re-buy the music again. Sounds like a great deal...
Thank you Tivo Gods (and Goddesses)! My selection of what to watch while on the Dreadmill just improved by a factor of 100!
