Nokia E63 review: just about what you'd expect it to be

Just a few days ago we got our mitts on the QWERTY Nokia E63, and now Mobile Burn's got a full-on review of the device. They think the phone's attractive for its price, and are particularly fans of its feel and contacts system, while the obvious drawbacks -- lack of GPS and HSDPA, plus a less powerful camera than its predecessor, the E71 -- are not enough to make it feel totally cheap. The E63 is essentially not surprising in any way, but it's also not a disappointment, and the reviewer seems to be pretty impressed with the device overall. Video of the review after the break.

Looks like Nokia E71.....
either the phone is huge or those hands are really small ;-)
That's because it's a scaled down (read: economy) version of the full-featured E71.
Laura June is on a roll this morning
I expected a cheaper E71, sounds good to me!
Does it have any lag? How about battery life?? Two very crucial factors when deciding to buy a phone.
Don't know about the E63 but the battery life on my E71 is fantastic. The best I've had on a smartphone since the old 2G days.
Is it me or do that guys thumbs look way to big to type on that thing?
Three words: ugh.
Where is the other two
He didn't mean 3 strings, but 3 characters. In English, both string and character mean word to him.
Start wearing other people's shoes.
UGH = Undeniably great handheld?
Got to love how Engadget manages to spin all Nokia stuff to something negative.
In mobileburn's review they state: "In the end, the Nokia E63 is just a fantastic little device." while according to Engadget they see it as "not a huge disappointment". A little difference in the tone, maybe?
A couple of weeks ago mobileburn's review of 5800 was noted here. Engadget's tried to focus on all of the negative points in the review, but in the end had to admit that mobileburn thought the tube was "not bad". In the actual review they state "We'll reserve final judgement on the 5800 XpressMusic until we get our hands on a production device, but suffice it to say that so far, so good."
Not to mention how they managed to trash an early pre-production model of N97.
It would be nice if you at least tried to hide your bias.
1. Put Apple logo on it.
2. Change the name to iSomething.
3. ?????
4. PROFIT!!!
Iman:
3. Increase price by 30%.

The end of the review even says "It gets most everything right, and earns a "Highly Recommended" rating from MobileBurn."
Damn Engadget, you're not TUAW.
Seems to be a pattern there for sure. Remember these headlines?
"Nokia's N96 gets unboxed on video, looks exactly like you'd expect it to"
Or maybe...
"Nokia 5800 Tube browser screenshots appear, underwhelm"
Crackberry killer!
That sir, would be the E71.
Looks like an older blackberry in a weird color.
this seriously blows.,nokia is lagging.n no u cant just throw apple logo on it n will become profitable.iphone has only released 2 models happen to be the best multitouch on any device period.not to mention the best browser ever besides a pc that is.sad to see nokia been making phones for 13+ years n apple 1+.but yet is years behind iphonekiller,.,
Well perhaps you should think about the fact this not Nokia's iphone killer, The N97 is there iphone rival which as usually Engadget heaps negative comments on with apparent reason for it.
The iPhone is not worth killing. Nokia is doing just fine.
Is there some kind of rule that all companies have to release an iPhone killer? I think Nokia is doing fine with their +- 40% market-share right now.. And as far as I can see, Nokia has a phone aimed at every type of users.. want a business phone? no problem.. want a phone for your kid? no problem.. want the phone with the current cutting edge specs? no problem.. Only thing I dislike about Nokia phones is the OS.. I don't know how much it has changed lately, but mid last year I bought one of the N-Series phones (it was really new and supposedly good at that time), but I returned it a couple days later and went with my really good Nokia 6230i because Symbian was just too slow for even the most simple tasks..
IMO it's not hard to do an iPhone killer hardware wise (OK, true that not many phones have all of the sensors the iPhone has) and even design wise, but in a phone it's the OS that counts.. WinMo is awesome and really expandable, but lets admit it that the UI is really ugly and hard to use for many people.. I don't know about Symbian as I haven't used it lately, but like I said I was disappointed with it when I last used it, because I used to be a Nokia boy, having my first phones be Nokia's.. I don't know about RIM as I've never used one, but I see some people complaining about them.. Mobile OS X does have its flaws, surely, but what it advertises to do, it does well.. I still need to find a mobile OS as easy and clean to use as Mobile OS X (OK, TouchFlo is really close, but it doesn't go all the way :(), which after all is what a phone is really about.. and if you jailbreak you iPhone, the possibilities are almost endless (at least thats what I thought when I had it).. the addition of copy and paste and flash in the browser might make me swap my Touch HD back for an iPhone, as WinMo really is not too intuitive even after playing around with it and changing it around as much as I could.. And I still keep my Nokia 6230i in my bag whenever I travel, cause you never know what can happen with these newer phones..
For those too lazy to read that, I'll make it short here.. This is by no means an iPhone killer as it is not aimed at the same people.. Hardware wise, there probably are many iPhone killers, but it all comes down to the OS.. After a phone in todays world is something you need to rely on in the worst situations.. Imagine you need to call the police or something, and your WinMo phone would need a hard reboot or something.. I think I should have stayed with my Nokia 6230i as it has everything a phone needs, but I guess I'm just too spoiled :x
I'm sick of the poor reviews Engadget churns out day after day. It used to be an impartial site. It seems to me that if the product is not manufactured by Apple it ALWAYS gets a negative slant? Might as well rename the blog to iEngadget!! Consider the feed deleted from by browser- just had enough of the bollocks!!
Maybe you guys should cut Engadget some slack. I started coming here from Gizmodo and that place is a joke.
You think these guys are biased? At least they dont sh*t all ove reverything that isn't apple related, they are decent enough to say "seems okay" and "looks decent"
Gizmodo will just say "mediocre compared to the isheet" or "coule be better (a a icrap)"
I hate Giz so much I'm about ready to start a Gizmodo hate site.
Gizmodo being crap doesn't mean Engadget's bias is ok.
I mean come on. You have to admit that "fantastic" and "not a huge disappointment" aren't exactly synonyms. Or maybe I just don't get it because English isn't my first language.
The irony is that most fan-sites don't have such an obvious bias. There's a lot of Windows Mobile, Symbian, Blackberry and even Apple websites with a more open-minded mindset than Engadget.
It's a shame. Engadget used to be a fantastic gadget blog... and then the iPhone came along.
Fixed
It's a shame. Engadget used to be a fantastic gadget blog... and then the Apple cheques came along.
I honestly don't think that Apple are bribing Engadget. However, I do think that Engadget believe an Apple bias generates traffic. More traffic = more advertising revenue.
I was forced to run away for commenting that my n95 was better than the iph0ne because i could turn my cellphone to a walking wifi hotspot.
@Aaron:
Maybe they are being bribed, maybe they aren't . But i have to admit, that every apple discussion on almost every single handset review must be generating some good traffic, which translates into Ad revenues.
Engadget is still no where near gizmodo in terms of Apple bias. gizmodo will ban your ass if you make any bad comments about Apple or call them out on their Apple bias. Whats worse is that now you have to "audition" to become a commenter!? WTF?? Audition? To be a commenter? LAME. So long as engadget doesn't stoop that low they're ok with me.
seems like the cheapest VoIP mobile on the market, so i like it.
So Engadget is just supposed to agree with Mobile Burn or else they're biased?
And whats wrong with being biased? This is a blog, not a newspaper. Newspaper's are supposed to be impartial. Blogs are personal. If someone likes a certain brand.... you'll just have to deal with it.
This is not a personal blog. It is owned by AOL with wages and such.
Did you actually read the text? Engadget is reporting a review at Mobile Burn. As such, they are paraphrasing the review's verdict -- they are NOT doing their own review of the product and they are not supposed to change the tone of the verdict.
Dude, all Engadget does for anything other than an Apple device and landmark other devices (G1, some HTCs, some Palms, etc.) is post reviews from other sites. This page is just a short summary and a pointer to another site's review. The only original reviews they ever do are stuff like Apple devices and the aforementioned other things. When you're summarizing someone else's review, you usually don't try to put words in their mouth. I really like how in every non-Apple topic Engadget gets called out on their bias and all the caller-outers get highest ranked and yet nothing happens.
So the more wallet-friendly E63 has a 3.5mm jack?
