The Dark Knight fan commentary BD-Live feature shown on video
So, you and hundreds of thousands of others picked up your Blu-ray copy of The Dark Knight today, huh? We know you haven't had time to fiddle with the BD-Live extras just yet, but one Joe Lynch from G4 TV has. One of the most intriguing aspects of the flick's interactive feature set is the fan commentary; put simply, users hook up a USB webcam to their player (PS3 included) and then commentate as the film progresses. From there, you can upload your take(s) to the BD-Live servers for others to enjoy. Granted, we aren't too sure how you'll actually find someone bored enough to listen to you jabber on about a film they purchased, but we reckon that's beside the point. Vid's waiting after the break.

Yes, this is exactly what I want, to invite the Youtube idiots into other parts of my home.

Interesting... He was one of the oldest Engadget posters I knew of! If clak, letstakeawalk, and flashpoint all change their names too, that would just make me sad.

Could be an interesting way to do Riff Trax type commentaries.
For those who don't know what Riff Trax are, check out http://www.rifftrax.com/
protozoider @ Dec 10th 2008 11:08AM
Ugh, I cringe just hearing the name rifftrax. It's nothing like MST3K. They aren't any good without the writers they used to have. My worst problem, they aren't legit. They sold out. Check their crunchbase. I bought a couple commentaries, they weren't that good. Then I found out they were given $5M venture. They were all like "hey support us, buy our stuff and donate". I loved MST3K and was completely in support of rifftrax, thinking they just needed to get back into it. I thought they were being cool doing this solo, they just want the money.
KillaChaos @ Dec 9th 2008 9:03PM
Well at least BD is going somewhere.
Ian @ Dec 9th 2008 9:03PM
can anyone say Mystery Science Theater 3000?
Eliot @ Dec 9th 2008 9:41PM
Yes... "RiffTrax"!

Mike, Kevin (Tom Servo) and Bill (Crow v2.0) are ahead of the game on this one. Looking forward to watching this this weekend.

Wow thats guy in the jokers mask is so creepy and realistic that i want to get in a bat suit and puch him in the face to add to the realism
Tejas Padekar @ Dec 9th 2008 10:46PM
I'd do it without the bat-suit!
Damn, Creepy Clowns!
Brian @ Dec 9th 2008 9:06PM
Cool technology... on paper.
The only film I know of that I would actually enjoy this feature: Repo: The Genetic Opera
Jeffnla @ Dec 9th 2008 9:13PM
Just because you CAN do a thing, does not mean you SHOULD do a thing. This is a horrible idea that will not help sell a single copy.
How about LOWERING THE PRICES?
Vanillacide @ Dec 10th 2008 5:25AM
Just because you can, doesn't mean you should is exactly what I was going to say too.
Who wants to waste their bandwidth on random ravings of idiots; ironically he says posting on a blog with public contributions. But still, I can honestly say I would never, ever, use this feature ... it's bad enough when this people are at the movie theatre, now we can bring them home with us.
LOWER THE PRICES instead.
Eldiablo @ Dec 10th 2008 8:00AM
And the Oscar for the most pointless use of technology in an action related film goes to....
....Batman TDK
Max @ Dec 9th 2008 9:13PM
Is this supposed to entice me into buying a Blu-ray player? It isn't working.
decapitor @ Dec 9th 2008 9:15PM
Just because we can doesn't mean we should.
wrabbit @ Dec 9th 2008 9:21PM
It's not necessarily a bad idea. Sure there's gonna be even more junk on youtube, but then every once in a while you might stumble on a gem of a commentary by a big fan who talks about all the stuff you wish the director did in his commentary. I do think they should have a mode where you don't record the video, just the sound - I don't need to see some dude's face while I'm watching the movie... now, I wanna see what happens when the porn industry starts doing that with their movies! :D
Ian @ Dec 9th 2008 10:07PM
o you see here now this is my FAVORITE scene, the way he picks her up and plants her on him. just screams success!
VintageGamer @ Dec 9th 2008 11:58PM
"every once in a while you might stumble on a gem of a commentary" assuming anyone actually looks in the first place
G-mail @ Dec 9th 2008 9:30PM
Counting down til someone provides a full-length commentary consisting of picture of goatse.
Josh @ Dec 10th 2008 10:15AM
almost makes you wish for tubgirl...
SebS @ Dec 9th 2008 9:47PM
I could see this working out like xbox live has special gaming nights..."game with the pros" or whatever they call it...how about instead of the regular recorded and saved to disk commentaries you watch the dark knight with one of the stars or director and watch it live and see and hear what they say right when they say it...? maybe? Then for those that miss it live, the commentary is still there to watch...
Joshua Walters @ Dec 9th 2008 9:53PM
Why does everything have to be so social now?
Theres a good chance that if Im not watching the movie with you, I dont want your commentary. Hell, theres a good chance that even if Im watching the movie with you, I still dont want your commentary.
giuliop @ Dec 10th 2008 5:44AM
Watching a movie with other people. What a peculiar idea.
absinthe party @ Dec 10th 2008 7:24AM
I've broken off semi-successful relationships because of girls talking through movies, not to mention threatened to destroy groups of teenagers chatting away in the theaters. Listening to some idiot jab away about Christopher Nolan in my own house would make me throw my remote through my damn TV.
Do not talk through movies, people. That's what diners and pie are for afterwards.
Game_playa @ Dec 9th 2008 9:58PM
It's the logo from the Legend of Zelda series.

who in their fu***** mind would want to watch some overzealous fanboy in a shite mask dancing like barney???
UnixSystemsEngineer @ Dec 9th 2008 10:25PM
I can't be bothered to spend my time listening to the director's commentary, and he's someone whose opinion I might actually be interested in.
h0mi @ Dec 9th 2008 10:27PM
I dunno. Dana Snyder could sell videos he made of commentary on his or other films.
Salsa Shark @ Dec 9th 2008 11:17PM
Joe Lynch = director of "Wrong Turn 2" and very cool guy.
Jeff @ Dec 9th 2008 11:47PM
This just reeks of desperation - from all parties involved.
Chris Are @ Dec 10th 2008 12:09AM
Dumb.
Benny @ Dec 10th 2008 12:32AM
This actually could be a usefull feature if used correctly.
If they had a rating system of the commentaries, then it would make it easier to dig through the crap.
Also, there's a possiblity of other actors or people that worked on the film to make commentaries on their own time.
If you want to know what the "sound guy" thinks about the movie, you could watch his commentary.
I actually think this is a pretty good idea if used correctly.
Lloytron @ Dec 10th 2008 3:01AM
I really don't get it. The reason that movie commentaries are interesting is that you get to hear from people who worked on the movie, and the most interesting ones talk about the experiences they had making the movie, and how various scens came about.
Why would anyone want to watch some random guy watching a movie.
"Hey this bits cool. Oh yeah That was funny. BTW did I mention the big twist is that..." etc etc.
Worst idea ever.
Steven @ Dec 10th 2008 3:09AM
That guy with the shotgun in the bank came into my work today. He bought a 37" tv for his house or something. I work at Bestbuy.
