Mercedes-Benz intros SPLITVIEW COMMAND system

It's hardly the first example of the technology -- we saw a very similar system from Delphi in action at CES last year -- but Mercedes-Benz's new SPLITVIEW COMMAND system appears to be one of the first instances of it being used in a production vehicle, and that certainly counts for something. From the looks of it, the system is very similar to the Delphi one, with the 8-inch display able to let the driver keep an eye on the GPS while the passenger simultaneously watches a DVD or something equally distracting on the very same screen. That's done with the use of a special filter that masks the display and only lets the proper pixels slip into view depending on where you are seated. No word on what sort of premium the system will demand, if any, but it'll apparently be available on all S-Class models starting in the summer of 2009.

I will never ask for a ride from you. :)
I think what they're going for here is personalization. An example that has worked great....
dual zone climate control, ever take a girl out that is freezing cold, but you're not freezing?
dual zone fixes that. This screen idea allows the person sitting shot gun to not only control the temp of the air on their side
but it lets them change the image on the center display to whatever.... maybe the passenger
can view a slide show of family photos, movies, TV.... who knows. I don't think it's a bad idea.
maybe not an option that I can afford or would want just yet but I like the things that MB brings to us.
ABS was them.... and I think they developed the airbag also....
we don't NEED this new screen technology, but it's cool.
"...ever take a girl out that is freezing cold..."
I don't date frigid women, only hotties. ;p
Your logic still applies; it's just that I have to crank the AC to keep her from scorching the leather...
The new BMW idrive/nav systems have something similar, except it doesn't play dvds while driving or whatever. For example, you have your small map on the right at all times, with the radio/ipod or vehicle info on the left.. the new idrive is very nice btw
I'm guessing it's not upgradeable (as in upgrading an old system to the new one).
Thats not what MB considers upgrading.
in the minds of MB, Upgrade = New (more expensive) car.
AMAZING!!! I'll take three and beta test it for them
I would love to have a splitview screen just to eliminate screen peaking for multiplayer console games with my friends
I bet it has a terrible viewing angle
Does anyone else notice how ridiculously high the dashboard seems? My family has two Mercedes-Benz, an E class and a SL class, and neither have dashboards that high. Looks to me as if the driver would have to stand to see in front of him.
they're midge..little people
Ever heard of the word "concept"?
This kind of dual display is already installed on some hyundai cars sold in Korea...
exactly! and if you watch that screen in the backseat, it is ugly(you can see both overlaid).. it ain't that cool like people wish..
Neat. I'll bet they're using a lenticular lens similar to what is used in autostereoscopic displays. Instead of converging images to create stereo, odd pixels angled toward driver, even pixels toward passenger. So probably dead if looked at straight on.
For some reason, I feel like I've seen something like this in Japan a while ago. Actually a few years ago.
Then again, I could just be mistaking.
Isn't there gonna be a pretty prominent ghost effect?
"Mercedes-Benz intros SPLITVIEW COMMAND system"
to be released, NEXT GEN. No seriously this thing will come out when the next generation of humans are here and were all dead.. DEAD THATS D. E. D!!!
Pretty damn awesome! I
If I'm not mistaken, it's Philips that developped this technology. Saw it at IBC this year.
SHARP Electronics developed that one. Close :)
it doesnt work, he's still watching the DVD! check out the reflection near the heating controls :)
It's COMAND, not COMMAND.
Well obviously something is wrong with it. If you look closely, they're driving in the wrong lane. XD
Considering MB sales were down last month by 37%, are they gonna be able to shift any cars with this in?
Yeah really safe in the car!!!!!!!
I have a question.......... what the hell will the passenger in the middle see?
A bit of both?
