According to two reports, Sony Ericsson and HTC are both semi-confirming Android handsets for 2009. An SE spokesman by the name of Garfield Brusewitz was quoted as saying that the company would introduce higher-end models of the Google-powered devices to start with, then supplement those handsets with cheaper versions aimed at a broader market. In another article, HTC says that it will launch one "or more" Android phones in the new year, aiming to have them on shelves by Summer. This hardly comes as a surprise from either of these companies, as HTC has been on-board since day one of the
OHA and, you know,
already has an Android handset out, and Sony Ericsson's
announcement of participation was naturally going to lead to some actual hardware. Now it's just a matter of getting these out the door, and... sneak peaks at CES, anyone?

That's what she said!
*sigh*... no marcus. just no.
now THATS what she said
^--- now _that_ is what she said.
Waiting
thats what she said
(sorry, it was wide open)
HTC Touch HD for sprint with android FTW!
"(sorry, it was wide open)"
That's what she said!
lol, i was waiting for someone to catch that XD
... do i even have to say it..
I'm so getting me one of these.
marky,
THAT, is what she said.
@OneLove: No, HTC MAX 4G!
What would be really interesting if they were to get Android working on those cheaper versions as well :)
In the article they say that they most likely will. Just that they will start with high-end phones.
Interesting side-note: I first sent this tip to engadget and then to phandroid. Engadget picked it up via phandroid and not via my tip, which they got earlier :)
"- We expect initially to focus on products in the higher segment, but later on we will also supplement with products for the broad mass market, "said Sony Ericsson's spokesman, Garfield Brusewitz. "
This will be where Android will truly make money for the phone manufacturers.
Android could potentially become a the standard base OS for low-end phone but still be powerful enough to be utilized on high-end devices.
how about android on a flip phone, like my sanyo katana?
i rue the day when i'll have to give up my katana.
Oh SonyEricsson, they make one phone with a smartphone OS and immediately they flee to another smartphone OS... But then again, their first choice was a rather poor one.
SE and HTC won't be dropping WinMo for Android. They'll make phones for both. WinMo is still popular in the business world just like the Blackberry OS.
True that.. I'd take the X1 for the current price, if not more if it would just pack Android! >_
Are you sure you know what you are talking about? SE had been making Symbian UIQ smartphones (P-series, and M-series) for years until recently. Now it drops UIQ in favor of S60 and WM thus Android will be its 3rd smartphone OS choice.
Should I be worried that I think this picture of a phone is more attractive than many of the hot girls on Engadget?
Thats why you comment here...... Its why I do.....
Hang on I replied to Fuzo not you. He his comment has been removed though after I reported him. I Apologise.
There are hot girls on Engadget?
No, you shouldn't be worried.. I mean look at those nice curves!
OK, I better stop there..
No, the onyl girls that Engadget posts are from Asia.
Just wait until Samsung releases an Android phone. I'm going to have to cover my keyboard in plastic wrap.
what phone is that in the picture?! photoshoppy?
nvm...it's Sony X1...i really should research before i ask questions.
I was gonna say something like this too.
the Truth is : this picture is HOT !
If ZUNEPhone could come this way too...
I'm counting down to CES2009
Thank god. Here's hoping the new android phones are sleeker and more appealing than G1. As awesome as the Os is, I still couldn't get past just how fugly the G1 is
I still can get past how annoying the word "fugly" is.
seriously.. stop saying it. it makes you sound like a retard.
Okay, fucking ugly. How's that?
dude, youre fupid.
Why not?
HTC, SE, whatever.... just make this phone:

Looks great. I wish it was available on Verizon, where my company has the plan.
I also see a Risk II icon in one of the photos... cool.
the mock-up's nice, but the windows logos are making me bi-polar
cooooooool.
Also it'd be nice to tinker with it on non "native" Android phones
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i dont even know what makes it different from "ugly"... what's the "f" do?
[replying to vince... dunno what happened]
its ugly vs f*cking ugly
well i'd rather just say that. fugly sounds gay.
back on the subject, i haven't heard anyone call my G1 ugly. in fact, some pretty hot girls i know keep saying it's cute...
ehm.. how do i meet these "girls" you speak of
...do i know you?
that's what they said
jealous much, liv?
It would be cool if I could run android on my easy-bake-oven.
Meaning - pick the phone, add the OS, and thats it. Its a comin'. Its a comin'. It came.
Right in time for my new contract phone, can't wait. The Android market place should be a virtual PC style bonanza of competeing software by then, different media players, skins etc.
negative. just not good for you, tarzan
Can't wait for the glowing reveiws this is going to get here on Engadget when it comes out. :)
People really aren't counting on winmo 7 being any good are they?
well, they have a track record of not being very exciting to the average consumer. Their offerings from 5 to 6 were small, and it sounds like they aren't doing a lot for 6.5 either. I hope 7 proves me wrong though. Plus, it would kind of make sense that they would build it with multi touch support and make it more attractive and user friendly to the consumer, as it seems they are doing so with Windows 7. Maybe they're taking a hint from Apple and themselves from the feedback from the Surface. Who knows!
Sure "some people" are counting on it ^^
You know "some people" even thought that the American estate was gonna rise forever back in July 2007...
throw a capacitive touch screen, trackball, and 3.5 mm headphone jack into that X1 running Android and you can count me in.
I hope we see more Tegra at CES. Tegra + Android .... Mmmmmmmmmm......
you're wallet sure wouldn't be going "Mmmm"...
"Why not?"
It checks grammar?
i'd like to see android on a flip phone. i dont need a goddamn brick in my pocket
I can't wait to see what HTC comes up with. While they technically made the G1, I don't think they had a whole lot of input on the design. Something that they come up with totally on their own as regular Android licensees will probably be a lot more compelling.
wow so I guess with all these companies coming together they should be able to design n release the "iPhone-killer".,.wonder what year that will ever happen.
Hopefully this will increase the diversity of apps for Android, and I seriously hope they come up with platforms that're more attractive than the G1.
I'm thinking more along the lines of a Touch Pro HD or similar.
Here's hoping!
And what about the cost....? HTP phones with Anroid would be reasonable but if Xperia X1 would get Android, then it would be the most expensive Android phone out there.....
And besides, the 9 desktops software will not run on Android as its a Windows Mobile application, which is considered as one of the most attractive features of the X1.
I'd like to 'announce' that some people will put the OS they want on their phones regardless of what decisions they make.
damnit i live in new zealand and i'm still waiting for the G1 to come out commercially, i'd hate to think how long those phones will take to come out.
and that is why i should use scroll. but still, F U Marcus!
So if HTC is building Sony Ericcsons' smart phones and they are going to use google's software than what exatly is Sony Ericcson doing? Just putting their name on the box?
