VIA's ARTIGO A2000 wants to be your own private server

VIA's new ARTIGO A2000 is a low-power barebones masquerading as a miniscule server. The squat PC features a 1.5GHz VIA C7-D CPU atop the company's VX800 chipset, a whopping single slot for DDR2 RAM (up to 2GB), two 3.5-inch SATA II drive bays, bootable CF support, gigabit Ethernet (as well as an optional 802.11b/g module), a slew of USB ports, and the rest of the familiar jacks, nozzles, and switches. The company is aiming the system squarely at BitTorrenters and those in need of lightweight file serving, and with supposedly low-noise fan and small power footprint, we can't say we disagree. No word on price or street date -- but you'll know more when we do.
Update: Looks like the ARTIGO's going to sell for $299 and that it'll be available by the end of January of 2009.

Price has to be around the same as the atom powered machines or I can't see it selling as good.
For a hundred pounds I would have one. Any more and I'll just cobble something together from my mother-in-law's virus-ridden castoffs.
Looks like its around £200.
How much porn can I store on one of these before it becomes a Federal Crime?
I would like to have a home server but, I don't wanna make things too easy for the FEDS if they decide to bust down my door.
For now I stick to a netbook and easily disposable portable HDD's cause you never know when the RIAA or Justice Department will start some shit.
@ Flashpoint
What kind of porn are you storing that you have to worry about the Feds or any law enforcement? Sounds like a little pedo action to me.
LOL Sevenmack!
Sevenmack
No...I'd never ever deal in k.porn. All my actors/actresses are of age 18 or older (according to California code 438 ss:14)
I'm just worried, the FEDS might think that downloading 100 Gigabytes a weak (or more) has broken the constitutional laws in some manner.

Looks like it is 299... it really should have 2 nics..
bingo. i just built a router/server with a dual core atom 330, 2gb kingston, 1TB green wd caviar + intel 10/100/1000 nic and mini itx case / psu for only $300. this $300 is for only the motherboard / case barebones: aka you still have to buy the ram, hdd, 2nd nic and psu. no deal, and the atom 330 smokes the c7.
Looks like it's got a Pico-ITX board inside.
I'll stick with my original plan for a low-power personal server build, that came out to $510 last I priced it out, with an easy $50 knocked off that if I don't want the LCD.
Intel D945GCLF2 mobo (Atom 330 - dual core FTW)
2 GiB DDR2 RAM
2x 500 GB SATA laptop drives in software RAID1 (lower power consumption)
And that's about it.
Via website says Nano-ITX.
How would it have a pico inside? 1.5Ghz is still a way off for that ff.
I agree, it would be a nano, the 1.5Ghz nano is a modders dream, i use them all the time.
"and the rest of the familiar jacks, nozzles, and switches."
Nozzles? Can I hook up a keg to this or something? Does my beer have to be USB compatible?
No, but your wine can be.

Anyone have any tips on a similar setup using the Pico-ITX board and 3.5" drives. I've seen plenty with 2.5" drives, but I'm trying to minimize costs and maximize storage capacity.
The thing with using a pico in this scenario is that the power rails are often very weak, so you have to choose your psu veeeery carefully, and as theyre not many on the market, there usually pretty pricey.
I'm looking for something similar, but more for HTPC. I mean, HTPCs are on all the time, so why not have something similar, low power (well, low enough but still able to play back 1080p content, maybe with hardware acceleration?), smallish footprint (although acceptable if it's A/V receiver size), quiet, HDMI out, stylish, etc.
It could be a fileserver, bittorrent, and also HTPC all in one. Slap some slow moving 120mm+ fans in there so it's quiet, and you should be good to go.
Go for a Mini-ITX board, try Linitx.com, they have a good selection, plenty with hdmi.
I recommend an msi fuzzy ironically (or not)
Available around end of Dec.'2008 ! it's coming !!
This would be an absolute BLAZEDOWN backup server. Slap 2 1TB drives in this guy and back up several machines with relative ease.
As everyone jumps on the laptop bandwagon, I believe we are going to see a number of such devices. Low end servers that act as a backup location, torrent server/leecher, can surf in a pinch, and act as a media warehouse).
Laptops are great, but the thought of ONLY having a laptop makes me cringe while traveling.
i built one up with an MSI wind barebones box with 1.6ghz atom processor just recently for
But that one have one HDD space only, seems have problem to install more HDD,,,,
For $100 more (or less--I got mine for $299 at OfficeMax a couple weeks back) you can pick up a new HP MediaSmart Server with similar specs, lacking a CF slot (and a VGA port) but adding 4 hot swap bays, a 500 GB drive, 512 MB RAM (similarly only one slot--upgradable to 2GB), and Windows Home Server pre-installed. I know this won't satisfy the Hordes of 'nixers out there, but it is a quite capable machine. Generally I build my own stuff, but aside from some slight annoyances (e.g., I'd like it to be a little quieter), it is a fantastic deal at that price-point. 'Course if you want to hook it up to a monitor, you're SOL. :)
This isn't bad, though. I wonder what the actual power consumption will be. HP is around 60W, which could be (and has been) bested quite resoundingly by other offerings.
If I were buying a barebones, though, I'd spend less than half as much on this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856167032
Or you could build your own using a shuttle KPC for $300 and have twice as many computing options while saving energy:
http://www.homeserverhacks.com/2008/04/build-green-400-windows-home-server_2871.html
try a single 3.5" WD 1TB green caviar instead of 2 2.5" drives instead to cut down your cost and power consumption and save you a sata port
Build you own little server

Wow, you didn't even try to hide the fact that you're spamming. Name matches the site and all.
Wind PC from newegg can be had for $139 new or $89 refubished ( when available ). Short of the dual NIC, it has everything this does for a fraction of the price.
Looks good ! it can be a great P2P / BitTorrent download PC !
where can I buy one? it is really cute!
I'm all for progressing for smaller more power efficient PC's, and that's why i have a shuttle KPC as my home server. Now is a little smaller, limited upgradable box worth another $150 to you? Buy a shuttle KPC and a intel dual core for $150 and you've got a more powerful machine with capable of a faster core 2 duo if you ever wanted, in the future.
Via is headed in the right direction, but this should be no more than $175....hardware progress forwards, price progress backwards, true to the business model....mo money, mo problems. I'll wait for one to pop up on ebay in a year or more till I even think about this thing again.
$299= 1.5ghz non upgradable small cute box
OR
$299= Shuttle KPC, 2.0ghz intel dual core, 2gb's of ram and a 1tb hard drive.....hmmmm oh yea, forgot the KPC is a cute little box too. I also forgot, the shuttle has a kit to setup to buy and install a optical drive, wow
I think I crapped out a cute little black thing like the via, and it was waaay cheaper. Don't buy into the hype, make them compete in price and speed.
