MEMS gyroscopes rumored to hit array of phones in 2009
Details on this one are freakishly scarce, but DigiTimes has it that a number of recognizable handset makers are looking to incorporate MEMS gyroscopes into their 2009 smartphones. It's anticipated that such devices would be used to sense motion in one form or another, with brands like Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, LG, Sony Ericsson and Apple (we know you're thinking, so stop) expected to welcome the tech with open arms. So, why the sudden interest in G-sensors? Falling prices, of course -- and the natural expectation of consumers for their future phones to be entirely more sensitive to their feelings than the one they're using currently.[Via Pocket-lint]

By the end of next year i'll have so many motion sensitive devices i'll have to take dramamine daily.
The mystery hunt for the G-spot is over with these new-fangled G-sensors.
Now how do we find the girl?
I haven't had any problems.
But if you are, you could always check Craigslist. They have everything on there!

GPS?
"G-sensors" doesn't refer to gyroscopes.
Most of what was said flew over my head. I just wanted to mention that is ONE UGLY PHONE!!
I agree. Why wouldn't I want a wide keyboard to go with my wide screen? It seems like a lot of effort to go through to make a phone with such poor urklenomics. Maybe they should take it one step further and announce that it doesn't twist open as we all assume, and is actually in its fixed position. They can call it the T-Pain and get the rapper to shill.
because you can use a wide keyboard unless you have naturally long thumbs. I for one don't.
This article amuses me. By MEMS gyroscopes, you just mean standard accelerometers, and a handful of phones already have them - iPhone, G1, HTC phones, probably much more. So really the only thing notable is that accelerometers are catching on. But the use of "MEMS gyroscopes" all over the article just makes it sound neat, when it's really something we're all familiar with.

Not quite accelerometers. They are more of a tilt sensor. Gyroscopes are usually used for determining the "attitude" or degree off of level of something. The MEMS acronym indicates that it will be a dvice that is measured in microns. Funny side note MEMS (Microelectromechanical systems) are refferred to in Japa as micromachines. Now, I want to see one of those old commercials again!
You realize that gyroscopes are different from accelerometers. So if they really start incorporating gyroscopes into mobiles it would be something new.
gyroscopes drift though. so you won't be able to keep track of the attitude of the phone without some other kind of sensor. usually you would combine an accelerometer with a gyroscope n then you'd have an IMU. with this you can get an accurate measure of the attitude of the phone (with a kalman filter).
acceleromer - noisy readings, but their readings do not drift in the long run as they are measuring absolute position with respect to the g vector
gyroscop - accurate readings, but the small errors add up and you eventually have a bad reading if it's by itself. i don't believe they directly use gravity to measure though. i think it's impulse that creates the readings.

What the hell is that in the picture? Is that the bastard offspring of a Treo and a Mylo? You know T-Mobile will pick those up. They could call it a Tremylo. You would have to shake it real fast to hang up on a call or close an application. Maybe they could make the shake action introduce a vibrato effect into the music you are listening to.
You're an idiot. You do realize Cingular has a phone out that does that? So why would Tmobile want that gayness?

If you can't recognize sarcasm, I'm not going to explain the joke to you.

Game_Playa !
Right back at ya dude!
@Pheonix
Thanks! I seem to have overlooked that article.
@ Kali4
My bad dude.
I couldn't really tell.
Plus, i start out alot of sentences everyday with the phrase, "You're an idiot."
It's kind of my thing. So, my apologies.
@BlurMagic
No prob.
Awww, group hug.
... And god bless us, everyone!
that phone is hideous looking.

Saving the best (Apple) for last there Engadget?
gyroscopes -- what a weird sounding word.
"Tartlets... tartlets... word's lost all meaning to me."
friends reference ftw!
The first phone to have accelerometers and to flip the screen by detecting switching between portrait and landscape was the myOrigo.
MEMS gyroscopes are *rate* gyros. They do NOT report absolute angles.
The Wii Motion Plus has a three axis rate gyro in it. The totally misnamed "SIXAXIS" controller from sony actually only has a single axis rate gyro in it.
They output data like "My current rotation is 20 degrees per second along the X axis". Seems rather pointless to include these in phones, and game controllers for that matter, just like accelerometers. Waste of silicon.
have you ever played the wii or ps3?
"...brands like Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, LG, Sony Ericsson and Apple (we know you're thinking, so stop)..."
