Sure, we try to front as world-weary cynics, but when we pinged our folks at Nokia for a statement on that
suspiciously-awesome slide about a previously unseen touchscreen interface and device concept, we were totally hoping for a "oh, our bad, that's a real phone and it's awesome and it's being released in the States
tomorrow." Naturally, that was not the case. Here's what Nokia had to say on the matter:
"The story you sent over was from a non-public presentation that discussed some UI enhancements - NOT a new product. The form factor shown was a generic form factor and not meant to showcase a new device / product."
So, yeah. They're not really going to fess up to a lot here, but if we were to read between the lines we'd say these "UI enhancements" are much more likely to get real and official someday than whatever vaguely-hinted-at device was shown off beneath them. Maybe. Reading in further, we'd say it's a little odd that Nokia's demonstrating to
investors its "best in class touch" capabilities by using a mockup interface on top of a mockup device, but perhaps that's why we were never so good with "the monies."
Well I certainly hope for Nokia's sake that they aren't lying about this... referring to your next-gen phone as "generic" isn't exactly a good sales angle.
Fortunately for you and Nokia, they weren't referring to their next-gen phone as "generic."
Read the article next time, please.
Wow, read the comment next time.
"Well I certainly hope for Nokia's sake that they aren't lying about this"
He's saying that he hopes they aren't lying about it, meaning if they were lying about the fact that this phone is a fake and that it will be their next-gen phone, then they shouldn't call it "generic," that would be showing that they don't believe in the phones marketability.
Im sensing a little animosity here guys... Can't we all just be nice and share?
Share and Enjoy
goo.
Let's hope they're lying!
Pity, I could use a phone like that; at an affordable price of course... ha.
figures.,nokia should just stick to there basic entry level handsets...stuck in the 90's style.no one is buying that $738 n97.,u got engadgeters complaining about 199 iphone overpriced.,or 349$ htc touch etc., n series is dead.i agree with bandigolo.thanks to him i buying the zune acer laptop n voyagerÜ
Nobody is buying the Nseries you say? The N73 alone has sold over 24 million. To be honest, Nokia don't have good hardware anymore. They've given competition way too much time to catch up and that's very apparent with the release of the highly dissapointing N97. Nokia got excited about announcing a phone which by the time it's released will be nothing but old technology. It's kinda sad really.
The way Nokia is going right now with their high-end makes me hope that they crash and burn, just like Moto.
Of course, nokia never does anything cool... Hope they S60 makes them die... talk about a company that has good hardware but a crap OS. E71 -> SICK, hot candybar! oh wait, no S60 is older than my grandma sucka!
Guys, give up the S60 ghost and holla at android...
Seriously... Android on a Nokia would fckn pwnthewrld.
Nokia aren't cool because the 800lb gorilla on the block doesn't have to be.
Oh Come' on Nokia!
this news makes me want to stick my dong in a cheese shredder
Lucky for you, dongles are included with everything these days!
@nokiaman
Whatever turtles your sack, buddy.
@nokiaman
what ever creams your twinkie :)
I want!
I can't afford!
Why don't they read the comments and realise "teh internets" want them to make something like that and then make something like that and sell a million?
oh my god yes! best comment ever
Have I just been raped?
Good point btw...but I think their marketing/media relations dept is best at giving generic prototypes in lieu of some mouth drooling teaser ..........and grasping, designing n understanding what the whole world wants.
as a Professional i can safely say its FUGLY for everyone, windows mobile ftw == Professional Fusion Fuzo
Welcome back Fusion. For a second there I thought you'd died, but alas there was no celebratory Engadget headline so I guess not.
Its super FUGLY
lol.
So far what I can see, you're a professional in everything possible..
So just go back to the basement and go on with your gaming
Would it kill them to come out with something that is 2008-ish even...
Price $ arm and leg.00
Price: with £35 a month contract on Tmobile/O2/Orange/Vodafone/3 in the UK
Free
Multiple Homescreens, smart desktop widgets...? Seems like somebody has a crush on ANDROID.
Nokia, com'on. Get real and just join the OHA.... Android ftw.
I just sold my windows HTC Diamond, kept freezing and had to take out and put in the battery all the time, Bought a iPhone!
I wonder if this UI will be back compatible on say the 5800 or N97. That would sure push me into the 5800 territory to give it a whirl (even though the camera's middlin' @ best).
Wait, my comment had nothing to do w/ hating S60, loving Android, the phones being too expensive or their overall design language.
I'll try better next time.
Whaaa you didn't mention a single fruit company! That kind of comment on Engadget is blasphemy!
Nokia needs to stop pretending to make good phones, and actually release something ground breaking. They are not going to stay on top ruling the low end market with S40 phones.
Yeah, I said it.
*Looks at the N95's sales figures*
Yeah. OK.
I'll pass, Nokia. Keep trying.....or not.
So nokia are making a touchscreen UI but they're not making any touchscreen phones, I'm sure that great marketing Nokia.
5800, N97.
They're referring to the specific mockup design, which looks more like the new Lenovo than a traditional Nokia (not necessarily bad).
The amount of Nokia hate in these comments are ridiculous. And of course the blasted thing isn't real, it's a UI mockup, it was clear from the start. Nokia wouldn't just leak pictures on an official presentation.
Haven't you heard? Bashing Nokia is the new thing. All the cool kids do it!
no bad, go go go! shanzhaiji 山寨机
@Anthony: The N97 isn't available yet anywhere, and the 5800 isn't available to any extent yet in N. America. So chansthename is right to observe that it's nice to see Nokia playing with a touch UI, but where is the hardware? Meanwhile, Apple, RIM and now Google are flooding the market with touch-screen phones. Nokia? Nowhere to be seen (at least where I live).
that's a really neat phone. Opens out to three panels. Must be kind of thick though. MIght not fit the average pocket. Oh wait....
I'd actually be quite surprised if 90% of the peopl commenting on this site have actually used a recent S60 build given the relative paucity of models available in the US and the somewhat prohibitive prices they retail for there.
Hey Engadget and Blogsmith, can we get in on the whole 'IP Ban' thing?
No more 20th account clak or kurt Mk II!
If only, if only nokia listened to their consumers suggestions.
Also that "not a new product", would be a killer product, especially with that interface, i would buy it in a heart beat
Shame on Nokia for ripping off a talented artists artowork!! http://-kol.deviantart.com/journal/21909987/
