iriver's 7-inch Framee-L digiframe handles multimedia just fine
It's darn tough to pump out a digiframe that's not immediately forgettable these days, but if anybody can do it, iriver can. The subtly beautiful 7-inch Framee-L features a 720 x 480 resolution display, 1GB of inbuilt memory, an SD / MMC card slot, USB port and an alarm feature for waking you in the mornings (or nights, if you roll like that). Furthermore, you'll find a capable multimedia player that can handle photo slideshows, all sorts of audio files and even MPEG-4 AVC / H.264, AVI and Motion JPEG video formats. It'll hit Japan just before Santa takes flight for ¥17,800 ($196).

Is it not kinda strange that people were all "don't leave your TV on standby" cause a country of TVs on standby wastes a load of energy and now we're like "fill your home with loads of little TVs that are on permanently fuck the planet SHINRA FTW"
I'd have to whole heartedly agree, there's just no point to them until there's a an e-ink solution like the Readers(albeit in colour)
Its a good pricepoint for the features, but you'll never see it here in retail stores for that price, seeing the average kid buying digiframes for thier old bat mother only look at price.
Here the bestbuy associate selling this to someone,
"Excuse me I"m looking for digital photo frames"
"I've got one here that has an usb port, alarm clock, and a great screen resolution to display your images on."
"Whats a ubs port? No I am looking for photo frames not alarm clocks."
"No this is a photo frame it just has all these extra features for the same price as this other one for less."
"do you have anything cheaper?"
Anyone else feel like the line between small TV's and Digiframes is getting a little blurred? I mean now who needs a small TV in your bedroom/kitchen/whatever when you can have a digiframe that does the same thing.
I for one won't be that surprised when these start getting offered with TV Tuners...
man thats ugly
Man, try to look at yourself in a mirror (or in a digiframe)
@Kilgore
The man's entitled to his opinion. Why you gotta get all personal so quick, brother?
@Smart,
Because he looks like a fucking trout.
someone wants to be the sony vaio all in one computer?
what an idiotic waste of resources these thing are. even if it wasn't draining power how often would you actually glimpse at it throughout the day? isn't it a way to grow tired of your beloved ones? i know precious they are to me and don't need a stamp sized piece of plastic to remind me of it.
Yeah these digiframe are not very useful or smart, BUT when they are made in the right way , such for ex the "Aequitas iGala" they can be invaluable.
Lacking the cash to buy an iGala for my mom I made myself an even better digiframe with very little expense.
I cannibalized the screen from an old 14" laptop, removed the keyboard and the bezel and instead of the bezel ordered a nice (and cheap) alu frame (they are so cheap that I could'nt be bothered to make one myself), installed an old wifi card, and one of these screensavers that show your Flikr or Picasa account (before removing the keyboard obviously), because I had some loose parts and some time to waste, and because it's Xmastime, I also cannibalized a usb hub and a DAB-FM andan DTV-B dongle and areal, transferring their remote control frequency to a cheap universal remote control.
Lastly I added 2 wireless amplified speakers ( an audio out is also available just in case).
Now when my mom will open her Xmas packet, she will have a 14" digiframe that via wifi will show her automatically all the pics that I will upload on a flickr account I opened for her., it will also play music from internet radios, dab stations, FM, and should she want also from her (ex mine) laptop PC, with a flick of the universal remote she can see TV (DTV-B), or check the wheather report, or see a world clock (I installed DesktopEarth too) or a calendar.
It took me 3 days (about 7 hours in total of actual work) and 29 euros to make, and when it was finished it was hard to let it go and put it into a packet for mommy, but I'm sure she'll be happy.
Now I want to make a new one with a touch screen (like the iGala) on an ubuntu based OS ,so that I could add Skype, google mail and maybe a browser to it.
As soon as I find the right (and cheap) touch screen I'll post the results on youtube.
Belive me guys: digiframes are the future (if you can still call them digiframes that is).
Ok...I understand to have a digital picture frame - but why should it play "even MPEG-4 AVC / H.264, AVI and Motion JPEG video formats"?? I can very well imagine the poor digiframe playing back videos while nobody is at home(and drawing a lot of power see Eddy's comment); and even if someone is at home - I can't imagine myself coming into my room to take something and stopping by to see some video.
All digital things seem nowadays to become a laptop.
Who wants to guess what that little round thing above the screen is?
- A light level sensor? (clever)
- A motion detector? (very clever)
- A camera? (pretty useless)
- A camera that doubles as motion detector and light level sensor? (genius)
- ....?
I'd be inclined to think it is the first one.
I'm very sorry mate but it's none of the things you mentioned.
I'm pretty sure it's just the receiver for the remote control.
But the idea of a motion detector is actually very smart, I wonder how I did'nt think about it when I built the digiframe I described above; probably because unconsciously I realized that I would'nt be able to add a motion detection system to it without installing a camera too; but in my next model (above described too), since I want to make it Skype & google video&chat enabled too the camera will be a must; and since motion detection software can be had for free on logitech homepage I'm gonna add it for sure.
Thanx for the idea pal
These things make sense in the office and that's about it.
Marijn, it's probably the infrared sensor from the remote control. I guess the Chinese designer who spent 2 minutes of his creativity to design these cheap-looking digiframes couldn't find any other way to hide the black whole a little more. I wonder why Philips is the only company able to manufacture decent looking mainframes.
I have a Philip's alarm clock/digitial photoframe/MP3 player/MP4 player/radio (AJL308) and it sucks. I'm now kicking myself for buying it (though it was on clearance sale for $60). Sure, maybe it's pretty but functionality on it sucks. It's slow and only 480x236dpi. You can't do simple things like set an MP3 as an alarm. Had I known about iRiver's product, I would have waited.
How about a good frame that is in standard 4:3 format (who takes widescreen photos?), has a wireless feature where someone can update your frame with new pictures, and has a decent resolution.
That's all I want. I'd love something easy I can get my Mom or grandmother.
Does it need to be easy for you to set up, or just easy for whoever uses it after you set it up? The SPF-83V works well for me. The Philips 8FF3WMI looks like it might be easier to set up, but I have no first-hand experience with it.
I want an alarm clock that I can set to ring on M-F and not on weekends. Just one. Please. My cell phone can do it. Any programmable electronics device should do it.
LOL. Philips mainframes uh?
You can find penty of those from a dozen of manufacturers in a dozen of different styles, or you can make one yourself just the way you like it, nobody belives me when I first say it but is not more difficult than assembling a descktop with standard off the shelf components.
P.S.
I know I talk too much about digital photo frames but I just love my mods and I Know that when my next project will be finished it will be the best ever seen anywhere.
I just have to decide if it's worth to splurge on a touch screen, or if to keep this 13" acer lappie screen and splurge a bit less on a first class universal remote control.
I already prepared a semi-opaque & thin plexiglass bezel to replace the one around the acer monitor(or eventually the touch screen) , it incorporates a led illumination whose intensity and colour can be changed and that will be placed flush with the screen.
On the four corners I drilled the holes for remote receiver, camera (will have motion sensing) , microphone (for skype, google video or Voip) and a light sensor (that does'nt seem to work).
Its wifi card will connect it directly to the broadband router to access a flikr account (by default) or with a push of the remote (or maybe the touch screen) a picasa account or the media files in the NAS or house PCs or in the included 4GB memory.
At the same time as it's showing video or photo files (picWiz II) it will be able to play music from internet radios, DAB, FM,podcasts , etc or access music and video files from the NAS or the PCs.
My previous build could show 14 programs of digital TV (DTV-B) and access a quantity of digital radio stations but I expect this one to do better because instead of an hacked dongle I used a proper DTV_B card.
Instead I hacked an external sound card that I'm gonna connect wiressly to an amplified subwoofer (2.1 system /25+10+10 watt).
It will control wiressly also the 3 videocams of my house (up to 5 can be connected) and all functions can be accessed over the interweb.
Besides Skype and Voip, and iGoogle, Gmail , Gchat & video it can be used also as a landline speakerphone with a digital telephone answer built into the aluminum, flat "leg" (or is it a foot?) that holds it up.
It has also IR and Bluetooth capability to access media files directly from a cell phone or PMP or to add a headset or headphones.
DesktopEarth (TM) will show a world clock with the cloud system on the globe updated every 5 minutes, the areas of the globe in the sun or those in the dark or moonlit, and also work as alarm clock.
Google calendar and notes works pretty well via voice command , so I installed also
MS voice commander which will allow to manage most if not all functions via voice commands, but only by using a bluetooth headset otherways the background noise would make it unpractical.
There are some more cool features but you can check them out on youtube by yourself next week
And if you have some more cool ideas please let me know.
