Gogo in-flight WiFi taking off in six Delta flights tomorrow
We already knew that Delta was pushing its in-flight WiFi plans ahead, and starting tomorrow, a half dozen MD-88 shuttle flights will be live with internet from 35,000 feet. As with Virgin America, Delta Air Lines will be relying on Aircell's Gogo technology, though it will go down as the first US carrier to initiate a "fleet-wide rollout." Eventually, over 300 domestic mainline aircraft will enable guests to surf the intarwebz from way up high, and you'll know if the one you're boarding is lit if you see one of the above pictured "Wi-Fi Onboard" logos on the boarding door. The launch flights -- which will run from December 16th through the 31st -- will provide gratis access to the web, while standard pricing of $9.95 on flights of three hours or less and $12.95 on flights of more than three hours will presumably kick in on January 1, 2009. Happy trails, and don't forget to give us a visit while you're up there.

yessssss finally

Finally?
Boeing was trying out it's Connexion technology (basically the same as Gogo) and decided it wasn't cost effective and sold off that business unit a year or two ago.

P@RN in da skies!
BlurMagic @ Dec 15th 2008 1:44PM
P@RN???
Wait... oh. You mean porn?
KeegdnaB @ Dec 15th 2008 4:05PM
Actually Tim, Connexion and Gogo are two different techs.
Connexion was satellite based. It would cut in and out which and developing a way to keep the connection stable was more costly than it was worth. Gogo on the other hand uses air-to-ground radio which means its more stable and cheaper to install (with the drawback of only working when you're flying over land, which is why its not being installed on the international fleet)

P@RN: Porn + Farm + 1337 = P@RN
Makes sense to me... though not really what I want to look at...

"though it will go down" Maybe not the best choice of words for this. I'm just sayin'...

Induction into the Mile High Club is still valid if one hand's on my trackpad and the other's on my naughty bits, right?
wodheila @ Dec 15th 2008 12:39PM
This could leads to "accidental" tripping and coffee "spilling" into keyboards. Ooops, sorry about that!!
BlurMagic @ Dec 15th 2008 12:54PM
"Sir can I get you anything?"
"Yeah, can I get an extra blanket, one of those little bottles of lotion, and a moist towel to clean up the mess when Im done?"
"You sure can! We call that our lonely man special! Oh you 40 year old virgins are so amusing."
Valicore @ Dec 15th 2008 12:30PM
For some people the only place to get away from people is an airplane lol. Airplanes are miserable enough as they are, and so, if I hear anyone playing fricken' WoW with a headset on screaming into it, I'll go postal.

They have some kinks to work out. I was just on a cross-country American flight that made a big deal about the GoGo service, but it never worked. Got "service unavailable" errors whenever I tried to connect.
Jeff @ Dec 15th 2008 12:41PM
I went CA-NY and back on American and Gogo worked fine. Great way to kill the time.

As I have been saying for 20 years, electronic devices DO NOT interfere with airline systems. If there was ANY proof this would never happen. Stop the madness and lets us listen to our iPods during takeoff and landings.
neofolklore @ Dec 16th 2008 10:47AM
Games to Play on Airplane checklist:
COD4 - Mile High Club level
GTA - San Andreas hijacking airplane level
thats all I can think of right now

Does anyone know if Gogo is allowing standard Internet display ads to display on screens, or are they filtering the ads out?
Thanks !
