There's something just a little
skeezy about basing predictions for Important New Apple Products upon nasty renders of protective case mockups from China. Still, they've
panned out astonishingly nicely before, so we'll just have to suck it up. iDealsChina is reporting that XSKN is not-so-secretly working on a silicone skin for the upcoming "Nano iPhone" (or, more likely,
iPhone nano) a shorter, chubbier version of the iPhone 3G. According to iDealsChina sources, the phone will apparently sport EDGE data, but otherwise seems unsurprisingly identical in specs to its forebears, other than the obviously smaller screen. They're also saying Apple plans to sell these at high volumes for low prices at hip spots like Walmart, that the company will (naturally) be unveiling the new handset in January at Macworld, and even go so far as to say that leaked photos of the device should be surfacing in the next couple of days -- we'll be keeping our eyes peeled. Check out another couple of tantalizing case renders after the break.

A cheap touchscreen smartphone? Sounds like a Tube rip-off to me. ;)
I thought AT&T was moving all smart phones to 3G??? http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/04/03/atandt-mobility-ceo-all-smartphones-to-be-3g-within-months-i/
Why would they bring on a "new" EDGE device? Not a "smart" phone perhaps? ...oh, wait, it's an iPhone... :P
Danny and Ahnuld didn't bother looking for their father, they already knew it was Steve Jobs.
Does... does the iPhone nano need to exist?
this just in...
..no. no it does not.
I'm waiting for the iPhone Shuffle. I hear its the size of a pack of gum and has no LCD display. There is only one button and everytime you hit it, a random person in your phonebook is dialed. It will be ultracheap at $49 plus 2 year contract for $149.99/month. Apple will sell gazillions!
:)
that's exactly what I had in mind.
AT&T better let me tether it for that kind of monthly fee.
I think the iPhone screen size, resolution and shape was central to the design, and will not be changed. But the device can be slimmed down quite a bit by shaving a few mm off each side, and eliminating the relatively large blank areas at the top and bottom of the unit where the earspeaker and Home button are. This could almost make the thing nano sized.
1. smaller display with the same resolution makes sense in keeping the functionality in the App Store.
2. If they are going to keep with the touch type thing it would probably be fine with a mandatory landscape mode making the "keyboard" more spacious than the iPhone's portrait mode.
3. The hardware inside the thing will probably be very similar to the first iPhone. Chip miniaturization would make this possible.
If the iPhone Nano has the same spec hardware as the 1st Gen iPhone, I'd expect a major overhaul with the 3rd Gen iPhone.
So let me get this straight : Apple will be selling a smaller iPhone, with (even) lesser specs ?
No 3G, no apps.
It'd better be damn cheap !
Btw I don't see what's the point in making the iphone smaller ?
On one side you want a big screen to browse the internet nicely, on the other side it's small enough to fit in your pocket so what's the problem ? oO
Or maybe you have a very very small... pocket.
I bet this won't be a smartphone like the iphone.
This is just ipod nano + phone capabilities = iphone nano
The big question is how are they going to utilize a virtual keyboard?
Perhaps in landscape mode only?
I think it'd be cool. But using a touch-screen qwerty on an even smaller screen? Not sure that would work. If Apple was ever going to put a physical qwerty on a phone, this would be the one to do it on to tailor it to the teenagers of the world who text a lot.
It's not the phone that I can't afford.
Will it have a smaller monthly service as well?
Why does it have to be a iPhone and not a touch? But then again this could be the Walmart $99 iPhone.
Doesn't exist.
I'm going to take a different direction and just say I loved the iPhone wallpaper gag ... made me laugh ...
Couldn't they have chosen a better picture to put on the "screen"?
**SARCASM ALERT**
No big deal, this is what all other games consoles do. now that Apple declares their pride and joy is a "game console", they have to release that slim model to keep consumer interest high.
i wonder if this being EDGE only could be an indication that it is being produced for Verizon.
Verizon doesn't use EDGE. EDGE is a GSM technology. Verizon uses the Qualcomm flavor of CDMA.
I'm not saying this is real, but here's what I'm thinking:
Apple makes another '2g' iPhone, and makes it CDMA allowing for a deal with verizon (now us's biggest network after getting alltel). They have exclusivity with AT&T for the 3g, but that's it. Nothing say they can't make another phone like any other co.
Seriously though, a slightly dumbed down iphone (because verizon are ui control Nazis) with app store, touch screen, and phone? Just about every person I know on verizon would get one. Genius
They'll get all the sheep that are too afraid/dumb to unlock an iPhone 2g and use it on tmobile- I pay $47 a month for 500 mins 400 txt and unlimited data. Fuck you AT&T.
um Verizon is "3G" and has been for a while now...
As everybody in here seems to be worried about the keyboard, let's focus on the really important thing: Is there any demand for an iPone "nano"?
As Apple has shown in the past with the introduction of the iPod back in 2001, a heavily overpriced (or maybe just expensive?) product with a revolutionary usability is best in order to launch a new product line. But in order to make real money with it, you need to exploit the total market, which includes the more price sensitive people, too. Therefore, it was necessary to break down the iPod to the iPod mini, later on nano, to reach almost all customers in the MP3 player market. And for all those poor kiddies out there, who could not even afford one of those, the iPod shuffle was introduced. Conclusion: Introducing expensive product that was already in the market with new usability and unique look and reduce the features later on to get the price sensitive customers. That's how you make real money!
What's so different about the iPhone? Basically nothing! It's exactly the same story... The iPhone "nano" is the next logical step for Apple in order to increase their profits.
Who of you thought back in 2001 (or maybe 2002) that it would be possible to shrink the iPod down to a size like the nano today? You would have probably argued that the weel would be to small :P So don't bother with the technical stuff, think in terms of money!
Hope your 'H' key gets fixed
You know what I want to see: Any kind of device that could serve as a 3G modem to my MacBook. Could this be it? I don't need to all these applications you can run on the current iPhone - I always carry my laptop which, sadly, only supports Wifi and Bluetooth (!) so far.
"There's something just a little skeezy about basing predictions for Important New Apple Products upon nasty renders of protective case mockups from China."
But that's certainly never stopped us before..
Don't be hatin', peeps. Danny DeVito needs an iPhone too.
"It's not a rumour!"
With the Macworld slogan this year as: "Even small talk is big" should give a nice clue.
you got to be fuckin kidding me. I hate apple, and i hate these teens that get so caught up in it and act like its the best thing ever. this is surely pointed to kids. it just pisses me off that most people outside the world of tech thinks that apple is the best player in the world. before i get to heated im ending this now.
Before?
That mockup was done in Autodesk Inventor.
It could be just someone who wants to start up the rumor mill again. Any person can get their hands on that software.
i doubt they would actually put edge on that...
Here we go again...
I'll take smaller with less features any day. No GPS. No WiFI. NO CAMERA. A phone with a decent address book and calendar that can be used as an iPod. Sold.
Stumbled across this while looking for a replacement power supply for my iMac in Odessa, Ukraine. Has an alleged photo of the iPhone nano. I have no idea how to read the article though (in Russian). May be just another rumor but it is the first picture I have seen.
