More shots of Lenovo's Android-powered OPhone: 'love on the rocks, with no ice'
What goes down easy with a gorgeous cellphone that'll probably never leave China's borders? Stately rocks, of course. The Android-powered "OPhone" is quite the sight to behold, and while the Lenovo logo may not look quite right to American eyes, we're sure you could learn to love it in time. We're also finding out a bit more about the unit's internals, as it will include a 5-megapixel camera (with Auto Focus and flash), a microSD card slot, English / Chinese input via virtual keyboard, a video recorder and Bluetooth 2.0. Check the read link for a few more angles, and just in case you're wondering, no touchscreens were harmed during the shoot.

Me wantie?
I'm Ron Burgundy?
You stay classy, San Diego. And you go get a life, iEye and CLAK and Fusion!
Do you have to use your O Face when you use it?
how dare they make something that doesn't start with the letter i.
Sexy...
Interestingly enough it looks a lot like the Cowon S9.
http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/15/cowon-ships-s9-pmp-to-us-soil/
I wouldn't be surprised if they had a lot in common.
Maybe even the same manufacturer.
yes drop dead gorgeous
Perfect Android Device, Best Looking
@Fuzo
Best looking? Well I suppose you're right, but that doesn't mean too much when the only other thing on the market is the G1. Not that it doesn't look pretty slick...
That thing is drop-dead gorgeous. I like that it looks like all-screen, it does a better job hiding the bezel than the iPhone.
And an on-screen android keyboard would be welcome.
at first glance, i coulda sworn it was said Cowon player.
Ok "Ophone" like they are not trying to take a shot at MAC.
What a truly insightful post...how would we ever have guessed that correlation without you?!
It's not like it's a 23:FD:S4:DK:S3:2I-phone.
If its running Android, it will most likely be as good a device as the G1. Hopefully, its hardware (camera, antennaes, etc) are better than the G1's though.
Looks tight,.too bad it will tank in the states ,. No subsidies.put it on the list of another failed iphonekiller.,.only good thing come out of this ,begining of new lenovo fanboi club .
Yea...wish there was a price though. I'd love to see that beast stateside
so how can it tank in the states if it's Asia only? ::duh::
2009 will be dominated by android based phones
Like most phones
Looks fantastic. Shame I will probably never get to use one. Is the device up side down because the words are all facing the other way. I also thought it was the cowon at first.
It's because they're in China, duh!
Gooners 'till we die!
Finally someone (a company) gets it. If you want to survive against iPhone, you've GOT to sex it up a lot. People have to be wowed. And it's also got to really work well.
While we don't know exactly how the phone will work (aside from some flavor of Android), here's hoping it looks as great as it looks!
I'm a happy iPhone owner, but it's nice seeing other (potentially) nice devices from other manufacturers too. If nothing else, it will make Apple innovate even more ;)
why yes, that would be quite a shame if it didn't LOOK as good as it looks...
What, innovate like that phone with no MMS messaging? the phone with a camera but can't take video? the same one that doesn't offer SD storage? Yikes, if they innovate too much more we might just end up with a phone that can't make a call ;)
@Andreas
I realise you are making a valid point that the iPhone does lack in some areas, but you've got to admit that it does an awful lot of things much better than the competition. For starters, it's a touch interface done right.
@ Kelmon
Yeah, I do appreciate the direction it has taken the market, and the push towards aesthetics and the user-experience that had been so lacking across the tech-landscape. At the same time I really don't understand their closed-mindedness when it comes to some things. I won't mention them here but we all know about their app controls etc. that simply make you  each time a new one comes out. For a company that's so 'creative' and 'ground breaking' they really missed - wide - of the mark in several areas. I'm not so much an apple 'hater' as a 'why do you cripple yourself?' person. That and I like saving money (muchos $$) and having hardware flexibility with my tech (SD cards, computer components) so 'I'm a PC' in that sense.
All told it's good to have competition - better for all of us in the end - I just HATE, did i mention.... HATE when people look past all of the flaws and convince themselves (and then try to convince others) that they dont need what's obviously missing. So yeah, take away all the blind fanbois and all of a sudden i don't mind having apple around so much :)
@Andreas
You make good points. What's even more frustrating than the iPhone's flaws, though, are its successes. It really does amazingly well in the areas where it gets things right, so it's irritating to see that they have to nerve to make some parts of it so perfect and yet leave out features that have been standard for a half a decade, especially with that kind of price point. Pity that it's not all it could be.
I'm really hoping this comes out in the states, because Apple is starting to become the new definition of "resting on your laurels." New products need to kick and punch Apple into fulfilling the iPhone's potential.
I just had to bust out that high pitched "The Darkness" voice when I read the headline.
I was wondering how many people would get that :)
+1 to anyone who got The Darkness reference. You, sir, have been upped.
I frickin' love them!
"I believe in a thing called love..."
::Grab balls in vice::
"Just listen to the rhythm of my heart!"
love The Darkness reference
+1. Now, get your hands off my woman, motherfucker.
Too bad album two was terrible.
That photograph makes me cringe. "YOU'LL SCRATCH IT TO FUCKERY AND BACK WITH THOSE ROCKS!"
And turn it the right way up!
Very funny you mention that. I'm playing w/ my new 5800 right now & was thinking the same thing: Those rocks! No-ooooo!
What about this oPhone?
http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/09/microsoft-pranks-with-ofone-apple-rolls-eyes/
Woof! That thing is sexy! Nice to see someone make something that can compete aesthetically with the iPhone.
Yeah, it looks beautiful and will have the power of Android... Its just perfect !!
I will surely get one !!!
too bad its a lenovo
Wow.. first time I heard that one.. If their laptops are any indication, then this will be an awesome phone..
whats different about the logo? it looks just like the one on my laptop
FWIW, the Lenovo phone brand does not share much at all with the Lenovo computer brand other than the name - they sold it off to another company a while ago.
definitely like the look. shame about the name though. if that thing hit stateside i would get it.
I'm thinking I might take that new chick from Logistics. If things go well I might be showing her my OPhone. "Oh... Oh... Oh!" You know what I'm talkin' about. "Oh!"
damn beat me to it. immediately what i was thinking.
Make sure to put it on silent because It vibrates and rings.
shots of android running or it didn't happen
It made it to land! It can stay.
Stupid rocks on my phone.
Stupid phones on my rocks
If Apple (a computer manufacturer) can make a hit phone, why can't Lenovo, who is certainly gaining traction state-side? It would be really nice. Perhaps Sprint could consider this as their Android phone, eh?
only if it were a winmo phone
See, that's what the G1 had to be, in order to hurt the iPhone.
But... WILL IT BLEND?
Den er sgu dejlig den der, lad os se hvornår den kommer kan jo ikke vare længe meeeen lad os se hvornår den kommer hertil...
Dusùmafuo, Ĝendasx Đụ, ۷ ۵ۻ۾ڶڳںڌټٻطөәҗ Ҝalofen!!
@Orappa
It's China only! Dansker...
iPhone will soon get a ticket to Hell... and back! ;)
It's a ONE way ticket to Hell and back.
Seems like it's China only. Probability of this to actually be released in the US? Probably zero, since the US market prefers buying old and locked phones. Sleek phones in Asia is nothing new.
The oPhone is already trademarked. Look at ophone.com . Interesting teaser shots on that site.
"while the Lenovo logo may not look quite right to American eyes"
That is SO right!
...well, that WILL change...
LENOVO looks more reassuring than SONY at the moment...
LOOKS GORGEOUS.... as a matter of fact I was SO AGAINST getting a touchscreen-only Android phone... but I would definitely get this one.
Too bad it's exclusive to China.
Also, unfortunately I guess it will have the iPhone's same embarrassing HVGA resolution.
OMG, me f***ing want one! the fact that it has a huge touch screen and especially the bluetooth 2.0 function already set got me j***ing in my pants.
It's so sexy it has TWO slots... One at the top and one at the bottom... Now thats taking a hint from mother nature and improving on it!
It looks more like a Storm than a iphone
Yes. It's also Storm-thick. But looks smooth and that's what matters...
Shiny! I want one!
They were trying to get as close to the iPhone's design as possible, without actually copying it. The only major differences as far as I can tell are that its Lenovo not Apple, and Android not Leopard. Also, on an English Keyboard, an "O" is right next to the "i". Maybe that had something to do with it.
Lenovo has CLASS !!!
No official China Mobile handsets offer Wi-Fi this far and it's unlikely this thing will have Wi-Fi either. Nokia, Sony Ericsson, HTC, etc. all have to circumvent Wi-Fi on their phones in order to get their phones subsidized by China Mobile. That's why many people in China buy gray market (parallel import) phones intended for Hong Kong just to get Wi-Fi.
Apparently this OPhone won't be powered by Android. According to the news in China (read here http://www.pbdigg.net/show/15015.html) this phone will be powered by another open platform which join develop with China Mobile, which call OMS - Open Mobile System. According to the news, it will have applications and functions that "more suitable" for the "local Chinese culture" (whatever that means).
