Sony to release new handheld sometime in the future
According to Eurogamer, sources close to Sony say that sometime in the future, a new PlayStation Portable will be released. While there's been no official word, the game site is reporting that there could be an update to the current PSP (which might be called the PSP 4000), and in the not-too-distant future (2010 or 2011), Sony will introduce a completely new model, confusingly dubbed the "PSP2." David Reeves, SCEE president has recently been quoted as making vague, suspicious statements such as "there are currently no plans for a PSP2," and "I go to Tokyo quite a lot and no one has referred to it - I think they have their hands full at the moment." Nice try Reeves, but If you keep up these kinds of thinly veiled allusions to a new system, we suspect it's only a matter of years till this cat's out of the bag.

if only it was real :(
000000 @ Dec 16th 2008 12:17PM
I'd buy it. Especially if it had a touch screen and was hackable.
Fusion Fuzo 008 @ Dec 16th 2008 12:18PM

Just FYI, that's a mockup that was released... Sometime last year I think. Nearly 12 months ago at least. It's not real.
Harbinger @ Dec 16th 2008 12:52PM
Fan-made mockup from a couple years ago. Still looks great.
Flashpoint @ Dec 16th 2008 1:16PM
- DUAL analog sticks
- A2DP
- SSD drive rather than UMD.
- games downloadable to SSD or purchaseable on 4GB memory chips
- touchscreen with keyboard
-Opera or Google web browser
- SKYPE
anus1220 @ Dec 16th 2008 7:29PM
only gripe i have with your specs is the google or opera.
how about firefox? with add on support.
PLUS
-webcam
-(obviously)wireless (n perhaps)
P.S
that mockup looks sexy as fuck, would DEFINITELY buy.
OneLove @ Dec 16th 2008 10:34PM
can't wait till someone gets the balls to make a laptop with a edge to edge screen like that.
XIYL @ Dec 16th 2008 11:03PM
That mock up was actually an early Sony one for the original PSP. that picture was from quite a while before the original PSP was released.
Mooex @ Dec 16th 2008 11:36AM
damn thats sexy, i hope its touch screen
iCandy @ Dec 16th 2008 11:48AM
OLED touch screen!
anon @ Dec 16th 2008 11:56AM
While I have an iPod touch and think it's nice, I'm all about tactile buttons, especially for games. Touch screen games (a la iPod touch/iPhone) are going to bring back bad memories of Nintendo buttons not working.
Lowest Ranked @ Dec 16th 2008 12:20PM
More like OLD screen. This mockup was rendered when word started spreading about a PSP sequel.
Flashpoint @ Dec 16th 2008 1:20PM
A touchscreen would be best because theoreticaly, with advances in technology, you would have a keyboard that pops up and dissapears - with a web browsing experience not unlike what we have on iPhones.
Not for games, but for Wifi internet browsing.
Félix @ Dec 16th 2008 2:03PM
Looks very very nice.
But it sucks badly.
You play 20 minutes with this kind of design and your hands will hurt you so much you will cry.
ergonomics = 0
but it sill looks nice..
RioRyan @ Dec 16th 2008 2:06PM
"OLED touch screen!"
I think that would be ridiculously expensive and annoying.. touch screens are not for gaming, and everyone, especially Apple, need to realize that.
LiQuiD_FuSioN @ Dec 16th 2008 2:09PM
Has anyone tried playing Cube on the iPhone/iPod Touch yet? While the game's graphics look impressive (yet slow to process), the way the developers laid out the controls is pretty cumbersome. I don't think I could ever enjoy Cube by awkwardly holding my iPhone in such weird positions without radically changing the controls to make gameplay easier. Just an example of why physical controls are still the way to go.

That mock-up with a few enhancements would look cool. That said the Pandora is looking good. Sony have alot to do if they do bring a psp2.
dale1v @ Dec 16th 2008 11:37AM
[sarcasm]If this doesn't take UMDs, I'll turn to the next gaming device of the century- the iPhone [/sarcasm]
thedesolate1 @ Dec 16th 2008 4:30PM
I swear if they dont get rid of that cursed UMD disk im going to startt a riot. and NO that doesnt mean they can stuff it with some other proprietary drive.
justin block @ Dec 16th 2008 11:37AM
First- This is a nice mockup of what the product will be. I'd buy anything that looked like that.
Ray @ Dec 16th 2008 11:44AM
Anything? How about a bomb that was shaped like a psp and detonates when you press any of the buttons!
And you are not first, you are sixth.... FAIL!
chefgon_ign @ Dec 16th 2008 11:38AM
For the record, this is an old fan render, and is completely unrelated to the story. Don't get excited.
SewerShark @ Dec 16th 2008 11:38AM
I hope thats not the new design...I like the PSP design.
SOOPERGOOMAN @ Dec 16th 2008 11:39AM
That pic is nothing what the new psp will look like. That is actually a different product that someone has cleverly photo-shopped to have PSP features saw it on NewLaunches about a month ago and here...
The new PSP2 will have dual analogue because if Sony doesn't they will lose the handheld market that they have now.
Hopefully it'll allow us to play PS2 games on the go...one can dream...
terry @ Dec 16th 2008 11:39AM
Have their hands full of what?
It took them clowns nearly three years to double the ram in the psp. Bullocks!
Besides, the ipod touch is fast becoming a powerful gaming device. It has a 500+ mhz arm chip and a very good graphics engine.
It is something to watch out for. I just hope Apple goes full throttle and give it the needed controls for more advanced gaming control.
That's my 2 cents.
216 @ Dec 16th 2008 11:44AM
the ipod touch has NOTHING on the PSP in terms of gaming (i say this having both devices). I just laugh when people say that the ipod touch is a "gaming" device. Yea it has games, but it seems like games on the iPod Touch are more gimmicky, 40+ Year old Soccer Mom type games.
ChuChu @ Dec 16th 2008 11:46AM
All the horsepower in the world won't help if there are not proper dedicated controls. The chances of apple adding dedicated gaming controls to the iphone/ipod are right up there with the chances of apple releasing a 12 button mouse. It goes against their core UI principles.
Phoenix @ Dec 16th 2008 1:37PM
A graphics ENGINE? No... a graphics engine is software. Like the Source engine or the Cry engine: Controls physics and graphics, and is at the heart of the game.
What the iPod touch has is a graphics processor, rendering the output from a graphics engine.
GingerFox @ Dec 16th 2008 11:40AM
the chances of it turniong out like that are slim, but if it does i might be inclined to get one:)
216 @ Dec 16th 2008 11:41AM
lol that pic up there is over 2 years old ATLEAST. Still, the PSP2 BETTER look like that...if Sony knows what's right (and they make good decisions so I trust them)
mykie @ Dec 16th 2008 1:36PM
I can't tell if you're serious or not.
htd @ Dec 16th 2008 11:42AM
nintendo probably will introduce their new handheld before psp2, plus the chance that M$ will release its own handheld, all in the not so near future.
tom @ Dec 16th 2008 12:04PM
I bet it different. M$ couldn't even get WM working properly, a handheld down the pipe, please? How can you expect a kid who can't dress himself properly to start a t-shirt company?
Like Sony said, no PSP2, but that could mean they call it the NEW PSP
Rodney @ Dec 16th 2008 11:43AM
the mock-up is oh so sexy! Here's my best guess
It'll still take UMDs - and it'll feature a DUAL laser assembly - featuring the traditional red laser to read the UMDs of the psp1, and (hold your breath) - a blue laser to read the blu-ray UMDs!!! It's technically possible to gain the increase in storage by making the blu-ray disk fit into a small umd correct?
take a hit on the hardware and reap the benefits of software / movie sales!
Nomi @ Dec 16th 2008 12:06PM
I really hope for your sake that you forgot to add "/s" tag, since blu-ray players don't need two lasers to read older disc. The "blue" ray is backwards compatible...also, I think UMD sucks ass and hopefully they move to an online distribution model completely, like they have with UMD Classics on PSN.
y3k.nik @ Dec 16th 2008 11:46AM
The current screen size is too large to make a phone that people might want to carry on a day to day basis.
If it has a touch screen around the size of an iPhone, or the N97 with a slide out panel with game controls, it would be awesome!
Jinx @ Dec 16th 2008 11:49AM
Let Sony do something right for a change and use Memory Stick Pro Duo instead of UMD.
You wouldn't believe how much battery life is gained. I went from 4 hours to 8.5 using the custom firmware.
cloud858rk @ Dec 16th 2008 6:02PM
SD cards > every other memory card. I doubt Sony would use it though...
Gopic @ Dec 16th 2008 11:50AM
Screw Sony. Playstation 2 was there last and best system. Its over. Screw bluray for that matter. Download. No more buying of 30 dollar movie so I can put it on my shelf and let it collect dust. Xbox.... Everything is better on XBOX, Games, Online, Commuity.... Die Sony.
Chris @ Dec 16th 2008 11:58AM
Could the title be any more vague? I guess "Sony to release new product" would work...
There have already been rumors that both nvidia and imagination technologies were signed on by Sony for a new project, so a psp 2 should be no surprise really.
h8rain @ Dec 16th 2008 11:58AM
Sorry but I can't resist.....
"sources close to Sony say that sometime in the future, a new PlayStationPortable will be released."
In other news, Ford will be at some time in the future making a new car.
Oh wait. Maybe not.
But seriously a company that makes video games consoles might make a new version sometime in the future is news? /shrug
