According to Eurogamer, sources close to Sony say that sometime in the future, a new
PlayStation Portable will be released. While there's been no official word, the game site is reporting that there could be an update to the current PSP (which
might be called the
PSP 4000), and in the not-too-distant future (2010 or 2011), Sony will introduce a completely new model, confusingly dubbed the "
PSP2." David Reeves, SCEE president has recently been quoted as making vague, suspicious statements such as "there are currently no plans for a PSP2," and "I go to Tokyo quite a lot and no one has referred to it - I think they have their hands full at the moment." Nice try Reeves, but If you keep up these kinds of thinly veiled allusions to a new system, we suspect it's only a matter of years till this cat's out of the bag.

Note: The above post is sarcasm. It also saddens us that we had to add this note.
Apple to release new laptop sometime in the future.
Nokia to release new phone sometime in the future.
Kanye West to release new bad song sometime in the future.
Dell to release new desktop computer sometime in the future.
Frigidaire to release new refrigerator sometime in the future.
Kenmore to release new dishwasher sometime in the future.
Mr. Burns to release the hounds sometime in the future.
LOL@h8rain
You 100% sure Ford IS going to release a car in the FUTURE ?
I wouldn't bet a dime on that right now, or you know 20 billions dollars ;)
@ Felix
Ford is better off than the other two of the Big Three. All of these companies are huge and there is still a lot of potential in them even if they fail.
Logically, it would be foolish not to bet that Ford would make a new car sometime in the future. The future is an infinite amount of time to make a car.
joshua, maybe you should have used the "/sarcasm" tag? some people, well, we won't go there.
"sources close to Sony say that sometime in the future, a new PlayStationPortable will be released"
...A penetrating glimpse into the obvious!
I heard from a reliable source, that the sun might rise up tomorrow.
@ urandom
I heard otherwise...
How hard is it to put out a news story saying that "there will be a new PSP sometime in the future." I could have broke this story. No need to cite sources at Sony.
I hope a new PSP (2?) will run PS2 games with some... help.
I think this can go without saying. The PSP has been out since '05 and needs an overhaul. I enjoy the system, but the lack of a second analog stick (and possibly more buttons) has crippled some of the games. With the tech advancements in the last few years I would think they could have a totally kick ass system with a decent price point. The PSP is a powerful system, even at today's standards, it's just too bad that devs aren't bringing much new out for it.
I would think they'll go with a download only option (much like the iPhone app store) for games and sell "purchase cards" at your Best Buys and Gamestops.
It's a good design but you look closely you can see L1 and L2 button on the side, which as far as playing games goes is insanely uncomfortable.
Looks awesome. Sort of looks like a OQO with its keyboard replaced with a PlayStation controller. Just add a touchscreen (with styli) with an on-screen keyboard and/or handwriting recognition, add a lite linux OS and we're set!
Of course there will be a new PSP, but its if they choose to unviel it in 09 or 10 depending on if they feel comfortable in releasing it in an economic downturn.
The specs on the current PSP started to look outdated only after about a year after the thing was first released so the exciting thing for me is not the look of a new machine but what it can do, I'm wondering if it could support a GHz+ processor with 5-6 hours battery for example...
In other news: The World Is Round
BULLS#$@ IT IS! I saw it, its flat as board but still has some charm to it none the less.
so Gaucho you've never flown in a plane :-) I'm pretty sure it is at least dome shaped xD ?
really? didn't get it? damn.
Sometime in the future? ::deploying smoke and mirrors::
I'd bet they're going to go game download only with their next console, like iphone. UMD failed and they've been putting serious work into PSN as of late.
just buy a Pandora already... touch screen 800x480 that looks good withough ghosting and should support clocking upto a 900mhz and maybe more with 8ish hours of battery at 600mhz ...how are you supposed to reach the nubs on this while holding it down there? I see hand cramp potential (Although I could be wrong)
What i wonder is... will it have an ARM-A9 which is multicore? or a MIPS or an one of the next gen embedded atom chips (since they are supposed to get even smaller and power efficient although i also lack faith in the platforms for such purposes)
PSP2 aside the Pandora might be here in spring 2009 vs probably summer 2009 or winter for a PSP 4000 with the Pandora already drawing attention for at least one Dreamcast port and native ports of Linux games some of which are quite impressive
that's DEAD sexy. i dig the PSP and if this is half as hackable and employs a touch screen.... i'd buy it, like, right away.
Calm down. Fan mockup. Not a Sony idea, prototype, or concept. Probably nowhere near what they're going to do.
I bet they make something that has no controls at all, and declare that touch/shake is the way of the future.
Either that, or it will have one analog stick, no d-pad, three buttons, and play games on a special Sony medium called Universal Software Chip, that only works on Sony products released after 2013.
seriously I know people are really pissed with the fact that you have to hack into it (it is mine I shouldn't have to hack into my stuff)... time better spent hacking ON your device
Sure it looks shiny and all but will the flaws bite bad in the end? will it have a decent screen with the track record and all... chances are that the GPU will kick butt though
I love how people complain constantly about having to hack their PSP and how Sony won't let them do what they want with it but then don't go out and buy similar devices that actually let you do want without hacking it. Is there some thrill of hacking into the PSP to run homebrew that I am blissfully unaware of? Now that some more powerful open source alternatives are about to be here, is there really any reason to get excited about a PSP2 (besides for playing commercial games)?
I also think it’s funny when people complain that their hands cramp up while playing the PSP but wouldn’t think of touching a device that is comfortable, yet not as attractive. Do you get beat up in school now a days if your tech gadgets aren’t pretty or something? Or do people really favor style over function?
Don't read this like I'm going on a rampage or anything. I actually want to know the answers to these questions.
ALL I WAANTS IS 2 ANALOGUE STICKS, RUMBLE AND AN ACTUAL REMOTE PLAY THING WHERE I CAN PLAY MY PS3 GAMES FROM ANYWHERE ONLINE, BUT NOT LAIR, I DONT LIKE LAIR :(
they need
- clamshell (so I don't need to bend my elbows up to see the screen)
- keypad (so I don't have to spend 2-5 minutes to type something)
- ergonomic design (that doesn't leave my tendons in pain and inflamed)
- usable Internet
- and a screen that lets me play outside, or on a bus, because it's portable
and you gotta hand it to SONY when ever they say something is not coming out: it comes out.
SONY has to go all out this time and make something revolutionary or face extinction
I have: GOW-COO, Mega Man Powered Up, Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops, patapon, Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters, Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron, Killzone-Liberation, Manhunt 2.
and I forgot
DON'T HAVE THE POWER BUTTON AND THE LOCK BUTTON ON THE SAME F***ING SWITCH
THE PSP is useless as a MP3/OGG player if i go to unlock it and slid down a little too far
I'm think my next portable is going to be a netbook chalk full of emulation goodness
sony should go hire this guy.. and use his design
*crickets*
I almost spit out my pop reading that. Look, just stop talking. You're obviously not a gamer, and you have no idea what you're talking about regarding hardware and software. Quit while you're behind.
Sony... take a good look at that fanpic. That is EXACTLY what the next PSP should look like!! Absolutely beautiful form factor.
Add a 720p HD screen, SDHC slot, and DivX/x264 playback and that will be the ultimate portable device, gamer or not.
You know I was was going to replace my PSP 1001 in mid 2009 with the 3001 but if these Reports are true I might wait a few more months and get the 4001
and for the PSP2 if it has no UMD slot it is not a PSP it's the MYLO 2
Plus my PSP keeps turning itself on and off anyone know the cause.
Yeah Sony,
Use that artist's concept so he can sue you for millions!
Either that or just do what Ben Franklin and Thomas Edison used to do, bump the guy off and steal his patents.
It should be exactly like the Pandora, except actually exist.
Lol, I wish I was a tech analyst, all you do is make obvious "predictions" and sell them to the media!
wow I hate whoever made this fake pic .
Unless sony actually decides to make it the same
@Francois
Cooking Mama IS NOT GAMING.
WoW!...Sony better take a good look @ this mockup because i would buy this without question'!
Looks nice, If it had a real OS and web browsing, kinda like a MID it would rock
I'd buy a PSP if it looked like that and had multi-touch capabilities!!
So... Sony if you are listening, then you have a potential customer if you make the PSP 2.0 look like the image above!
I think it's a poor design, done by a designer who values bling above practicality (there are lots of them out there)
Does anyone think of comfort, practicality and reliability?
1) how comfortable will those harsh edges be on your fingers as you play? In minutes you'd be be begging for smooth edges.
2) weight transfer of the unit with sliding screen. How will the weight feel in the hand with screen slid up? Top-heavy?
3) how will the reliability of the unit hold up with that sliding screen mechanism given that these units reach adults and kids alike? More reliable or less reliable than one without?
4) how will the screen hold up after being dropped with it slid out? More Sony warranty claims = more Sony support costs.
5) why is a sliding screen even necessary? desirable? If they go for bigger screens, they go for reduced portability, either way. The unit in the pic sure seems big enough to not be even remotely pocketable.
No, I'll take the current design, thanks. The only good thing here is dual analogue. No Home button convenient at the front. No Brightness. No Volume, etc. Pretty poor design with shocking ergonomics.
It amazes me that some people expect the head of SCEE to admit:
1) that there is a PSP2 coming
2) that they are working on a successor
Think what doing that will do to current sales of the PSP. Think, also, the illogical activity of waiting, doing nothing, for years, in a competitive market. Not trying to develop the next thing while your competitors do.
As long as enough money is being made with PSP (which it is), and the market is growing (portable gaming is growing), there is no reason to believe it is not being developed. In fact, it's foolish to assume they have been doing nothing regarding a successor all these years; it's common sense that they have done something. Nintendo too.
Expecting a company representative to admit it while the PSP is still selling well and isn't close to end-of-life is just silly.
That render make me wet.
Anyway, I'll buy the first mobile device who can play Morrowind or some stripped down Oblivion.
Wow, I would definitely get that to complement my touch if it looks like that. The only thing is that it doesn't seem very balanced with the screen on top and buttons on the bottom.
