More of Motorola's 2009 Verizon lineup leaked
Apparently the Motorola leak-fest begun yesterday hasn't come to a halt. After witnessing some compelling renders of smartphones the company has headed to Verizon, we're now privy to a set of featurephone / dumbphone mockups -- all courtesy of the Boy Genius Report. The new images show off a device supposedly called the "Niagra" (pictured), a slider in the vein of yesterday's "Calgary" QWERTY phone, a dowdy looking number called the "Fairbanks" (a PTT device), and a clamshell called the "Harmony." The latter two phones could hardly stoke much excitement, but the Niagra definitely gives us some hope for Moto's big comeback. Now -- these will all be powered by Android, right?

I've always hated those RAZR style keypads, they're just ugly.
Smib @ Dec 18th 2008 8:01AM
While I don't mind the look of them, I don't really like those keypads either. But I definitely like how some of these new phones look, it's just too bad they're all going to be for Verizon.
Flashpoint @ Dec 18th 2008 8:17AM
Razr's aren't bad, its just that they are old. People wanna see new and exciting gadgets. This looks boring.
Mobius_1 @ Dec 18th 2008 8:59AM
It's similar to my N76, so my two cents: it looks pretty good, really slick kinda good, and the whole nearly flush surface is nice, too. But it is a pain to type on and especially bad in the winter. I also find it very easy to press the wrong key when messaging, as there really isn't any obvious discernible-by-touch boundary between keys.
As for why a N76? It was given to me :P
Hackettman @ Dec 18th 2008 10:45AM
I agree that the look is fantastic but using the keypads always felt odd to me just the reaction to the buttons after a month or two of use got alittle weird.....
Vic @ Dec 18th 2008 11:41AM
I agree that they look good, but their functionality leaves a lot to be desired.
Shinigami @ Dec 18th 2008 7:45AM
Horrible design, IMO.
Shinigami @ Dec 18th 2008 7:47AM
Don't blame first two comments on being negative, blame Moto for being unable to design a phone everyone would fall in love with from first sight.
Samboini @ Dec 18th 2008 7:48AM
It is impossible to appease everyone's tastes. I like it, you don't. We'll leave it at that.
Josh @ Dec 18th 2008 10:11AM
i tried, i just cant like these new designs...the red, white, and silver would get old fast and the edges are too sharp in a weird industrial way, plus the flat keypad - its a good try, but just not for me...
maveric101 @ Dec 18th 2008 8:20PM
you guys don't need to low-rank him, he said it was his own opinion.
kingpunch @ Dec 18th 2008 7:52AM
anyone see delgo?
ipubs bastard child @ Dec 18th 2008 7:59AM
motorola, please, go bust already.
Orappa @ Dec 18th 2008 8:01AM
looks ok but the keypad is somewhat anoying...
Ryan @ Dec 18th 2008 8:01AM
I'm liking the 'edgier' cuts on these phones, though they don't totally remind me of the RAZR....Hopefully, this is how they will release them. Not bad!
Saad Rabia @ Dec 18th 2008 8:05AM
I hope the software engineering team are working on UI as much as these designers are working on these fine looking designs. :)
Tarnation @ Dec 18th 2008 8:15AM
I happen to think this looks sweet. Way better looking than my old LG Chocolate.
Holy Jebus you people are picky. Unless the phones wipe your ass, do your wife, and make samiches non of you seem to just want to take in the aesthetics. So far these are the best looking phones I have seen released in awhile aesthetically of course. Yes moto could drop a big fat turd when it comes to spec and OS, but for now I will give them the benefit of the doubt that phone is hawt.
Oh and tell me moto's suck with the exception of my immediate family most of the people I know seem to have Razr's and they love them. I just liked the design of the chocolate when it came out and my mom and my sister liked that you could get them in pretty colors.
Eddie @ Dec 18th 2008 8:26AM
I like the design. I would like it more if it was black.
Not ready to jump on the moto-hate bandwagon just yet.
Deuche ex Machina @ Dec 18th 2008 8:34AM
Come on, people, we're 13 posts in and no iTrolls??
"Motorola should just stop making phones and focus on accessories for my omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent iPhone. Fail."
I'd add a sarcasm HTML tag, but, well, what's the point?
Mobius_1 @ Dec 18th 2008 9:00AM
iTroll paranoia sometimes switches off people's sarcasm detectors.
Professor STFU @ Dec 18th 2008 8:36AM
Dear Moto:
Please bring out a big glass brick of a handset, with touch everything and Android.
Signed,
Everyone

STFU
Adam H. @ Dec 18th 2008 11:02AM
As he is Professor STFU, Samboini, I believe he is thoroughly school is the process of shutting the fuck up. I don't believe you need to command him to do so, he simply knows already.
lolkatz @ Dec 18th 2008 8:37AM
I've always liked the design and style of Motorola phones. They always look sleek and sexy.
But for the love of chuck, they need to stop using the same GUI that they've been using for years! It's slow and clunky, and while it looks good, all they have done is recycle the one they've always been using by adding a couple of colors to the mix.
seriously, I expect my contact list to show up instantly when I select the phone book option.
don't tease us with the android comment, engadget, you teaser you.
RemDX @ Dec 18th 2008 8:44AM
So CDMA is here to stay huh? At least release phones on GSM networks first if you really intend to stay afloat. It cuts costs when you want to ship internationally as opposed to a new phone. Just my 2 cents.
zephxiii @ Dec 18th 2008 8:58AM
No, its just that CDMA is a dumping ground for phones that no one wants, made by companies people hate. /joke
Nelson @ Dec 18th 2008 9:53AM
I thought China's system was CDMA. That's a pretty big market to ignore.
Ihar `Philips` Filipau @ Dec 18th 2008 11:40AM
CDMA != CDMA.
UMTS technically is also Code Division Multiple Access type of network. (GSM is TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access)).
You in US seem to stuck using the technical abbreviation which actually has little of relevance to the market.
Compare: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CDMA vs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CDMA2000 - First is type of network's physical layer used in wireless communication, second is set of standard for building wireless network.
G Man @ Dec 18th 2008 9:06AM
Do they have like metal covers or are they cheapo plastic metal lookalikes?
If it were made of machined aluminum, it would look pretty damn good, though I would worry about reception!
FT @ Dec 18th 2008 9:26AM
Hope they also come up with the "Viagra" device...
Félix @ Dec 18th 2008 9:36AM
Seriously Moto if you think your main problem is just design something is really fucked up inside your head.
NightBlade @ Dec 18th 2008 9:51AM
They absolutely HAD to switch the Send/End symbols with Send/End... eh, text?
I like the overall design, though.
Nelson @ Dec 18th 2008 9:55AM
At last count, Motorola had hired 50 people to develop Android, with several hundred more on tap. I don't see why it's not possible... Even Verizon had some folks at the last Android symposium.
Moe @ Dec 18th 2008 10:30AM
I've got my second Motorola phone now, and it has pretty much confirmed for me that I'll never buy another one. The phone battery lasts less than a year - and around the one-year mark, both phones have had other problems. I'm going to go back to LG - my last one went strong for three years!
No Moto @ Dec 18th 2008 1:18PM
Same here. We bought 4 moto phones for a family plan and after using them for 1 year, 1 is completely non-functional, 1 doesn't charge properly-throwing out soon, and the other 2 are just barely making it through. These phones are weak and aren't built to last. We are going back to our used LG/Samsung phones and they still work much better, feel more sturdier and have better ring sounds and tones.
The next time we renew our contract, we know what we're going to avoid....
Moto's phone business is way behind... my advice: stay away from the phones and whoever picks the business up will probably fail, too.
gb @ Dec 18th 2008 11:13AM
I like the Knight Rider font.
Dan @ Dec 18th 2008 12:22PM
now that's a nice looking phone right there. contrary to what most people have been saying, i think the razr style keypad gives the phone a cool retro, tron, if you will, look. the silver and red color combination is not all that bad either.
Agent .25i @ Dec 18th 2008 12:25PM
These pictures of all "possible" new phones from Moto are great.
But then I think of that commercial for the ROKR. The one where its these kids from Brasil, or Spain or Mexico I dunno are in a rock band... anyway, that killed off any desire to ever purchase anything motorola again.
Goodbye Moto
superhobo @ Dec 19th 2008 5:21AM
They should make that keypad touch sensitive.
