Sony teaser site says "revolutionary new VAIO" coming January 9th
Look, we're not going to speculate on what Sony has coming on January 9th. Let's just say that it wouldn't be totally surprising to see some weird, long netbook. Okay? Okay.

Good, My MOM was looking for a sub ~700 laptop. This should do nicely(If it's cheap)
SWEET! never been disapointed by a Sony VAIO, im sure it will be one awesome laptop!
PS: If you didn't get it, my previous comment was meant for you, NineT9.
^lol, nice one!
Does it have Blast Processing?
"Good, My MOM was looking for a sub ~700 laptop. This should do nicely(If it's cheap)"
You did see the word "Sony" in the title didn't you?
Why is it being released after the holiday seasons after the peak of sales?
so alex l., what was your comment that was so important that you wanted it at the top?
is this the same NineT9 from the xbox scene boards......love your vision skin for xbmc btw....hope you havent dropped it mate.

ignore above comments its suppose to be posting in reply to the first comment, but for some reason its posting here...seems like the comment system is acting up again.
Heheh. Sony and cheap in the same sentence makes as much sense as Apple and cheap in the same sentence. It will be expensive. Period. My guess is 1 grand minimum. Probably $1,200 and I don't even know the product yet!
@The_Joker
that's whats so revolutionary about it. It will be the first cheap Sony product :P
heyya NeXus :D I know who you are too lol
Yea this is NineT9 from the XS Boards :D Thx for the compliment, nice seeing you around here in Engadget :D
Always enjoyed the screenshots of Nexus too :D did it ever get released? i cant remember, i just remember those sexy screens!
I just came. Loads.
Thats what she ..... nevermind, too easy.
THATS DISGUSTING !!!
Sony comes out with a new laptop and I - jizz in my pants.
Alpinerover, I love you.
@ILoveApple: I thought you loved apple.
It's not even released. I'd characterize that as "premature".
Is that like some sort of Apple rap?
No it's frome one of the funniest SNL videos they've done in a while.
@The Joker
I just call it ecstasy.
im thinking longish wierd touchscreen thingy?...
I'm thinking more crapware, higher prices and enough version numbers to ensure that their (potential) customers are confused enough to not buy anything.
They're gonna make even more EXPENSIVE laptop!?
YES!
What a joke.
Good then don't buy one.
Simple, right?
I never understood the complaints about computer prices. There are other companies that make computers especially with the cheap netbook boom. If compters were given out for free, these are same people that would complain that the computer's too slow.
Will they present the "worlds glossiest notebook"?
Apple already has that award in the bag.
Well thats a big bag of hurt that Apple has then..
3 words... Get.A.Mac.
or at the very least hackintosh... we all know sony vaio are overhyped, attempting the coolness of apple poorly while running windows XP still.
Holy BAtman, are you stupid!!
People keep saying that people rip off from apple, while they don't know almost all apple "innovations" were created by Sony before, (Apple just popularizes it)
I'm not being obnoxious or anything, I'm just not informed on the matter, but Game_playa;
Could you please tell me some of these things, and maybe link me
If it's not too much trouble :/
Thanks. :D
John Doe
Sorry you got upset.
Sony will release a premium netbook and then Apple will come along and release an ultra premium netbook and soon we will be back at regular notebook prices, until Asus introduces the nanobook a smaller and cheaper alternative to the netbook.
actually acer aspire one is the one to bring down price on 9"/10" netbooks, then asus followed with 1000hx series and msi wind followed in the end. without this cheap price, I dont think there's any netbook.
Maybe it will be so cunning, so persistent, and so charismatic that it will be able to overthrow a corrupt government. Everyone will want one.
I'm more of an apple man myself, but free stuff is free stuff. Why not enter the give-away?
Hanukkah here I come!
most expensive netbook?
if you call the macbook air a netbook, then i doubt it
I love Macs, but hate being low ranked... What to say, what to say...
Might as well put me in a round room, and tell me to take a crap on a corner...
Say nothing.
It's so faded out i can't even read what he wrote!
I can't read it either!
and you're proud of that because?
Because if he's faded, he can take a crap and no one will see!
is is the proprietary Vaio Duo that only runs on Sony's version of the internet and comes with 17 anti-virus and spy-ware programs all of which nag for updates but can't get them cause of the 13 Trojans already installed.
Oh and the battery will say it will last 6.47 hours but as soon as you load a DVD it goes to 10 minutes, then starts smoking.
And the only application that will work without a BSOD will be the calculator.
Why all that skepticism?
Sony always has been a pioneer in laptop form factors:
- Picturebook
- X505 (ultra slim 10" lightweight ultraportable)
- U/UX series (they were the predecesors of UMPCs)
- TR/T series (10" lightweight ultraportable with integrated DVD and webcam)
- S/SZ series (first? 13" laptop, first with switchable graphic cards)
- Z/FW/AW (among the firsts with 16:9 screens)
Even in desktop PCs they even had this http://www.vaio.sony.co.jp/Products/PCV-P101/ before the current all-in-one iMacs.
Uh, sorry for the bad grammar, english is not my native language.
PD: VAIO TX was also the first with a LED screen. And the SZ Premium was the second.
don't worry about your grammar. i've seen plenty of native speakers with worse.
Points for all except the all-in-one. Apple had the all-in-one in 1998, and there were probably all-in-ones before that which almost nobody's heard of.
http://lowendmac.com/imacs/rev-a-imac-g3-233-mhz.html
Actualy, Apple did the all in one in 1984.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macintosh_128k
"before that which almost nobody's heard of."
I think apple had an AIO computer before 1998, maybe the 'Macintosh' remember that one? , of course so did sony, they had their similar system in 1985, system 35, and before that they had the usual AIO wordprocessor types of computers before that.
Yes, the old CRT iMac all-in-one came first, but I was talking about the big chin LCD iMacs, which design-wise are similar to that VAIO.
Not sure if LCD all in ones can be considered a different form factor, I can think of multiple reasons to back either side...
Those are sort of like classic cars. They were flops when they were released, very expensive, but they inspired a generation of new machines.
at what point does an LCD AIO seperate from just being a deskbound laptop though ?
Original SR series (like SR7K), 10.4" XBRITE display? Under 4 lbs? A few years ago I wondered why we didn't have small laptops like that anymore, I guess it was planned so that netbooks could come out and we could all go "Whoa!"
Will it have a regular SD card slot and non-exploding batteries? :-P
SD slot? unlikely. (especially when Memory Sticks are much more popular than, say, xD-Picture Cards)
non-exploding batteries? we hope.
... Which goes to show how much you know, under all that snark.
Most of the new Vaios have DUAL MS/Everything Else readers.
Yeah, but will this Vaio play Crysis?
Seriously, will it? Will it have performance parts at affordable price? Because it my book that IS revolutionary.
If you have something "revolutionary" just freaking go ahead and announce the damn thing.
I'll bet it's going to underwhelm. Good.
Change the way you 'look'...
Obviously that means there's going to be something funky about the screen. Super-wide aspect seems a given, after the FCC leaks, but maybe new/cool in other feature. OLED screen? They were one of the first with that little oled TV so it wouldn't surprise me.
@Voodoo
I have to agree that there might be a really wide OLED screen, but that might be it...
As Endeavour pointed it out, Sony was the first for LEDs.
@Endeavour
My SZ-6 has an accelerometer to shut off the hard disk when falling. I think Sony was the first to do that, too.
@iKurtMarkII and all the other Apple fanboys (Its so hard to read your names when your low ranked)
Just fuck off. I don't bitch about Macs all the time, and who cares who copied who. Can't we agree that ideas are meant to be used?
i don't think sony had the accelerometer first, ibm had it for ages, as did apple, admittedly.
Wow! It's revolutionary? will it come with windows 7?
No, Vista and a shitload of crapware.
Vista, with an option to downgrade to XP.
So you either get complete garbage, or outdated garbage. Your choice.
No, you can only handle so much revolutionary at a time.
@CraigJ
so, pretty much just vista?
lol just kidding I run Vista on my desktop and love it, i just couldn't resist the joke
it will be interesting to see if they use the modified CORE GPU that Toshiba was reportedly pursuing after it purchased the CORE processor division of Sony... the modified meaning Toshiba was going to make a GPU for laptops by lopping the CORE from 8 to 4 microprocessors for power efficiency. you never know the fine print on these corporate deals, Toshiba supposedly sells CORE processors to sony for the PS3 at cost...
It will be powered by dreams.
dual core atom dual core atom dual core atom cmon cmon cmon
NO WHAMMIES!!! NO WHAMMIES!!!
Stop!
Hammer time!
Sony (or HP) should make a nice slate tablet (with multi-touch)
I don't think this is an announcement for a tablet , but I think Sony or HP should make a nice (and loaded) multi-touch slate soon
I have a TC1100 myself, which is a nice (though rather old) slate but pen only
Sony's netbook? I thought Sony doesn't want to play in the "race to the bottom." Anyway, if it's a very cheap version of the TT series (same built, but using atom), then I'll buy.

hmm ... I posted the first comment at 15:07 and because I entered my password wrong it said that a confirmation email has been sent blah blah blah
I posted the second comment at 15:11 with the correct password and it also authorized and posted the first comment , grrr
It's interesting as it states, "you will change the way you look at laptops forever." This seems to imply something you will do to change the laptop in some way.
Sony's idea of revolutionary is a Macbook imitation running Vista.
Macworld won't even have a spotlight fanboy... you "god" is gone...
let me guess, Sony are going to produce a laptop...
* with a battery that doesn't catch fire
* with a keyboard that doesn't break if you use it for more than light domestic duties
* if it does break, they'll actually keep some spares for that model instead of waiting for three months from Japan in the meanwhile you have no computer
* if it does break out of warranty they won't charge $230 just for looking at it before they even consider repairing it
* where you get a choice of not having crapware on it
* where the DVD drive isn't region locked
* where they continue to produce drivers for their funky hardware long enough so that when you upgrade to the next version of windows you can use all the built-in peripherals
Me, bitter at Sony's treatment?
Why is it being released after the holiday seasons after the peak of sales?
Because CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas just happens to be going on then (8-11 January 2009). No better place to introduce it than at the LV Convention Center...I will be there to see it when it happens and I will report on it when I do with my Acer Aspire One netbook and my Verizon USB727 Broadband card!
Sony is actually releasing a dual-boot laptop which can run OSX and windows. Of course they will only be installing Windows but this is the Apple killer that everyone else tries and fails at.
Don't think so... BUT recent Sony laptops have EFI BIOS.
Sony makes great hardware. I just hate them because they suck so much ass running Windows and a truckload of preinstalled crapware.
I'd be happy to see them run OS X so that I would have more than 3 models to choose from.
Too big of a yawn it hurts...
no doubt sony vaio laptops are top notch.,i seriously doubt new laptop will be $700,be realistic.so many products sales are so price driven besides apple that is.economy stinks but apple sales seem to be better than ever, they unphased.recession proof, sony needs to consider price drops on pc's.theyre no apple..,
1920 x 1080p on-screen native resolution with hdmi output as a standard
seen? ftwk
Revolutionary? Last time I read "revolutionary" from Sony they were talking about their "revolutionary" laptop keyboards...the same type of keyboard that was on the MacBook long before...
Actually Apple copied the keyboard style from Sony
Do your research first before you say something
Sony and apple are so different.... why compare?... different OS... different hardware... different design... Both of them copy each other... but who doesnt do that?
I dont understand why some peoples answer is "get a mac" what if you dont wanna mac..... or dont like the OS??
what then??
sigh, not another"revolutionary" product...
"On the 9th of January "YOU" will change the way YOU look at the laptops" --------- Okay so it will be me who will change the pespective, what Sony will do?
We have ways of making you chance the way you look at desktops.
Anybody remembers sony c1xd that was first so called these days... netbook... apart of price tag... i need still same notebook with 3g and batery for 12 hours at least...
Not dismiss NZ or anything, but when was the last time Sony let loose a new product exclusively in New Zealand?? I can't help thinking it's something that has already been released elsewhere..ie, Japan?? Any thoughts?? Why NZ??
It's covered in wool and makes bleating sounds when you stick things in it's ports.
