Researchers achieve new efficiency record of blue OLEDs
Ever since Sony's XEL-1 hit the market, pundits have pointed to the (comparatively) short-lived blue OLED material as its biggest hamstring. Researchers have been toiling around the clock in order to bring the blue lifepsan in line with its green and red siblings, and now it seems like a team of Gators are that much closer to the promise land. Reportedly, a gaggle of whiz-kids from the University of Florida have "achieved a new record in efficiency of blue organic light-emitting diodes, and because blue is essential to white light, the advance helps overcome a hurdle to lighting that is much more efficient than compact fluorescents." Franky So (pictured) and his diligent crew were able to reach a peak blue OLED efficiency of 50 lumens per watt, which is halfway to his goal of at least 100 lumens per watt. Hurry it up, folks -- CES is just around the corner.[Via Physorg]

What, him worry?

gaggle...
Reminds of one of Ari Gold's funniest lines on Entourage...
"You all have one goal today - to get Vincent Chase's brother, Johnny Chase a job - ANY job. I don't care if it's a porn shoot where he is being gang raped by a gaggle of silverback apes, if there are cameras rolling, everyone wins"

Too little, too ate. The Sooners are gonna wipe the Gators all over the field on Jan 8.

So Tim Tebow is an awesome scientist too! Who is really surprised - except extremely worried Sooner fan up there?

I'm glad to see that Gatorade helps more than just athletes. ;p

The University of Florida is ranked higher than your school

1. I go to a community college (in Jacksonville). I care more about learning then how popular the damn school is.
2. Where, exactly, was I being critical of UF? Sounds like someone is jumping the gun a bit in their defense.
Kitty @ Dec 24th 2008 2:16AM
@Brad
I'd say he jumped the gun, but that's florida for you. However, when you finally do get your degree, it needs to be from a real university. Bullshit aside, it makes your education well rounded, and where you went to school can open tons of doors. For instance, I attended Cal and UTA, if I told people UTA, they'd say, 'where the hell is that?,' even though it's one of the best computer science schools in the country. Everyone on earth knows where Berkeley stands, even if the majority of its students are liberal arts majors, and that is a terrible part of the school.
It's stupidity and arrogance, but that's how most people are, and you have to beat the system at its own game.

so i guess this means holding off on buying any OLED screens, althou its not like i was goin out to buy one anyways in the near future. price has to come down, size hasto come up along with res. thou this is probably the future thou, ill take a bet on that

Am I the only one that initially read his name as Frankly So?

Indeed you are not.

huh.

It would be funny if parents named their kids Frankly instead of Frankie.
Imagine something like:
"Surely you can't be serious."
"I am serious... and don't call me Shirley."

Frankie and the Whiz-Kids..
I'm just glad they went into OLED tech instead of music.

Hmmm, a bit confused here... The first part of the article talks about lifetime duration problems of OLEDs. The advance was made in efficiency, giving a certain number of lumens per watt.
I guess I don't know that much about OLEDs. Do more efficient ones last longer? How are the two connected?
bri @ Dec 24th 2008 2:15AM
I was thinking the same thing...in general efficiency and lifetime are unrelated, and if you click on the link at the bottom of the blurb it will take you to the press release at Physorg. It doesn't mention anything about lifetime there so I think somebody is mixing news feeds here.
One thing I don't get in the press release is that the author says that OLEDs are tunable, which is not true. You need different epimaterial to get different color of OLEDs, so making a multicolor display requires different kinds of OLEDs. This option is still feasible but the statement is misleading.
Wwhat @ Dec 24th 2008 10:39AM
This is the second time engadget did that recently, take one thing and confuse it with another, it's getting embarrassing.
But perhaps they can bill it as 'testing the reader's alertness'.
DarkLight @ Dec 24th 2008 1:53PM
I'm late to the party... But yeah
More efficient = more light at the same current
OLEDs are already bright enough for you, so to get the same amount of light, drive them at less current
Less current = less heat
Less heat = longer life
So yes, you can get longer life at the same brightness out of more efficient LEDs (and OLEDs)

Wwhat @ Dec 24th 2008 10:45AM
Maybe someone should make a double blue LED and when one fails or after X hours of use have the other take over, take it away professor, just say you got the idea while browsing the web :)
I had the same idea about energy saving lightbulbs too, since they get to full brightness so slow put in a halogen or something backup light that turns off after the energy-saving one got full brightness, a hybrid light.
HerbieC @ Dec 24th 2008 4:34PM
hey!... how did you get my pic?
