Nintendo sold 1.7 million Wiis last week?
According to some not-quite-official but probably-relatively-accurate numbers from VG Chartz, Nintendo moved 1.7 million Wii units last week. That's a staggering number in its own right, and compared to the now-cheaper Xbox 360 (535,806) and the "hey guys, I'm still here, and I play Blu-ray discs" PlayStation 3 (239,576) it's a pretty commanding lead for Nintendo. The fact that most people in most areas can finally track down a Wii at a retail store for a non-inflated price probably isn't hurting things -- not to mention that really cool bowling game they've heard so much about. We're curious what console you might've picked up for a friend, loved one, family member, or that good looking person in the mirror this holiday season, so hit up the poll below. Then, after you've taken a particularly long sip of egg nog, hit up the video after the break and weep for humanity.| PlayStation 3 | |

And much like me, I'd imagine many of the people that selected "None" may already have one or more of the modern consoles that they are content with so they did not need to buy another one.
"Wii Sucks", "I haven't played it for 8 months" blah, blah, blah... It's like you guys are part of some fanboy collective.
If you don't play it then sell it (though you probably missed breaking even on it. Poor stupid you.) but quit bitching about it collecting dust.
VGChartz? Really Engadget? What next, are you going to get your news from a fortune teller? All VGChartz do is take NPD numbers and guestimate next weeks numbers. They also inflate the numbers by 6-7% and i never figured out why.
Fuck all you wii haters.
Sonic Unleashed? AWESOME game. Don't care what anyone says.
-Super Mario Galaxy, SSBB, Mariokart Wii, Metroid Prime 3, Boom Blox, No More Heroes, all GC games, Zelda TP, Resident Evil 4... I can keep going.
Seriously guys, I don't care if those titles are exclusive, they're amazing enough that I bought the wii just for those; I don't give a shit about whether some gay ass internet posters think I'm "Hardcore" or not.
I also have a PS3, it upscales dvds amazing, bluray is the shit (though the discs are expensive for backups, but thank god for the anti-drm community), and I honestly don't play many PS3 games.
As for the Xbox 360, eff that. The thing sounds like a damn jet is taking off in my living room, how the hell am I supposed to enjoy my nice sound system/hdtv with 60+db of fan noise? jesus... Not to mention that I literally had it replaced (new @ best buy, not MS) FIVE TIMES before I sold it. If I can't play dead rising for 3 hours without the god damn thing RROD on me, why the hell would I want to own such a thing?
Call me when MS releases the mythical thin/solid state xb360 with online game downloads and passive cooling cuz the chips are so efficient. Then I'll never use anything else, assuming you improve network media playback. MS is just a joke; they would've destroyed PS3 if they waited another 6 months of HW revisions and testing, maybe somebody would've gone, "oh hey, these things are burning themselves alive. maybe we should look into it?" Nah, $$.
All that said, I still use my original xbox more than any of these (except maybe the wii, I'm currently addicted to sonic unleashed and metroid prime) for XBMC. I've been looking for a small HTPC to replace it, maybe next mac mini revision.
Really? You can keep going? Please do... I was pretty sure you named every decent title. And those have been out for a while. I have had my Wii for a year and yes I will complain about it collecting dust because I paid for it and I would like some new decent games.
Those 1.7 proud new Wii owners are gonna be upset too, in a couple months, when they finish playing out the 6 decent titles that have been made for it.
If they made some good new games for it I would probably buy them, play them, and be happy again.
Bought a Wii, but as a gift to my parents. Since my 360 collects dust anyway, I have no need for another console.
I have two 360's, a PS3 and Wii. My son likes the Wii for the Mario franchise. Other then that - it's the most overrated console in history.
Is this like that time that the G1 was reported to have 1 million pre-orders?
PS3 ftw! the wii is for freakin children!!!
And old people, don't forget them.
ye and old people's votes freaking win the election in just about every damn city in this world.. plus they are running IN the election... oh damn come on PS3 only 250,000? oh well i am sure with a price drop ($200) PS3 will be robbing the hotcakes stall for its customers even though its worth its current price.
everything was a wii, except the last one!
and I know the guy in the last one actually ..
this wass soooooo funny!!
wtf? are you talking about bit too much to drink for the day?
I miss my Commodore 64 with the add-on tape drive.
I have a Day 1 Wii, so I don't think I need another one.
I bought two Wii's in december of 06 one for my lil sis and one for my nephew, had to camp out (first/last time I ever do that for anything) and at most they played it for the first month and has been collecting dust ever since, and I don't sell it hoping that one day it'll have a game that'll attract my attention. If someone was ever to steal it we would never notice it. The best game is Wii Sports, IMO and I've played their "best" games. It is the most overrated system and how its selling its the biggest enigma, I guess parents associate it with Mario. DS on the other hand is fun and I play it myself frequently with my sis and nephew. My sister had it first and I liked it so much I had to buy one for myself. They should do a survey that after purchasing their Wii's how many people actually play it after the 2nd month.
What is your address?
You know what would've been really funny, re: that video? If the last clip was of a kid being dejected to find out he didn't get a Wii; he got a PS3.
sorethumb, idk if youre saying that because the last clip was actually a kid a getting a ps3 instead of a wii, and he was happy lol
anybody else actually watch the clip? the last kid gets a PS3, not a wii lollll
and yea it would have been funny if he was sad...but then he would only be sad if he'd gotten a 360 ;)
voted none....because I already own all 3 systems (plus just about everything back down to the NES/Atari2600)....
Every time I see a video like this, I get even more sad for the Wii. I don't remember the last time I saw a piece of technology fail to deliver on its potential (because it has a lot of potential) so badly and yet still manage to sell like umbrellas in hurricane season. I bought a Wii back in 2006 like everybody else because it had about the same amount of good games as either of the other systems at the time, and I've gotten a total of two games for it so far, neither of which I cared enough about to finish. It's just been gathering dust for over a year. So sad.
Wake me up when Mario Galaxy costs $20, because that was the last good game on the system. Until then, I'll be enjoying my PS3.
Although I've never wanted a Wii, I could see why it appeals so much. In my opinion Nintendo has tapped into an audience that far outnumbers the "Hardcore gamers". It's worked tremendously well for them so more power to them, after all they're just doing what works well for them, it's what every other company does. And it's not like they advertise it as this "super mega graphical gaming powerhouse", so it's not like you should expect to play what's similar to the games that are on the 360 and the PS3.

I'm sort of surprised that it doesn't out sell the others by a wider margin. Hard core gamers are in the minority, so it is only fair to assume that a product that targets everyone else will sell more. I really like how Nintendo showed the rest of the market that you aren't a loser just because you play video games.
Engadget fix your numbers...
Engadget: Why should Wii?
If any one hasnt bothered to watch the full vid yet the last one was actually a ps3
I Tried to get a wii but some trackers are saying that stores have been sold out since like NOVEMBER!!!
I've already got a 360 and a PS3, so none. The family is going to buy a Wii sometime after the holidays, through a neighbor who can somehow get it for us for a mere $150.
Wii.... seriously.... its not really for anyone who wants to play any decent games. All i see are exercise, tennis, lego games, its quite lame. The only reason why it out sale ps3 and xbox360 is because more of the non gamers buy them for exercises. That steering wheel of theirs is pathetic... it has no feedback, no paddles, no shifter, only a wheel in mid air with a bloody remote. a Frisbee will feel so much better than that at 1/5 the cost. Wii is bring the quality of games (not technology) back to the 80's. With games like Farcry 2 and many others, ps3 and/ or 360 will crush Wii as a real game console.
I understand how most of u r graphics junky, but u cant argue w/ the numbers. I personally find games on Wii more fun than a 360 or PS3. Wii is more multiplayer though. So its a lot of fun when u have more players over. As long as they dont smash my tv. lol
its good to see that these kids finally got their freaking wiis, pity they'll be bored with it in less than 6 months.
I bought the Wii about a year ago, and played it maybe a total of 20 times. If that. I bought a PS3 recently and not only use it for games, but for video streaming off my network. Best investment EVARRrrRRRRrRRRr. Wii... will be going up on Ebay, too bad I missed the holidays.
vghchartz is probably the worst resource available for crunching numbers in the vgames industry. What the guy who runs the site did was inflate the Wii numbers in Dec. to make up for the huge discrepancy from his November numbers. I think he was saying Nov. sales in United States were something like 800,000 but npd numbers as well as released statements form Nintendo, claimed November US sales were over 2 million. Since vgthieves knows the groups like gfk and npd are watching him, he has to wait to mirror the real numbers so he inflates the numbers in December to reflect actual Nov. sales. That way, he can say he didn't adjust to reflect npd numbers when in reality he did. Yep I think that's exactly how he does it. What a lozer.
The only reason we have a Wii is because we thought my niece and nephew would enjoy playing it when they came over, but one day when i asked my nephew (he's six years old) if he wanted to go play he looked up at me and said "Nah, thats boring" I almost fell over laughing.
I got him some Wii games for Christmas and he seemed pretty excited about them but I guess we'll see how long that lasts.....I personally have a PS3 and couldn't be happier with it. I play it every day and I think its an excellent addition to my home theater. Its got all the killer apps I want to play plus awesome downloadable content whereas the Wii has like 47 golf games, lol. I'll must be honest, if my nephew isn't playing the Wii, it just collects dust - I recently introduced him to Little Big Planet on PS3 and he frigging loves it and keeps asking me if we could play it together.
