Leaked Rogers slides make us want to move to Canada
We're not really sure where to begin with this one, because the awesomeness is so thorough and so intense that we're basically at a loss for words; we'll see what we can do here, though. In brief, a HoFo poster has thrown up what appear to be slides from a Rogers event detailing the carrier's release plans for the better part of 2009, and seriously, if you name a badass handset, odds are it's here. Samsung will apparently be bringing the 8.1-megapixel Pixon, for starters, and Sony Ericsson will be throwing its name into the huge-cam hat with the C905. Turning our attention to Windows Mobile, the X1 is scheduled for release "around August if not sooner," Motorola brings the lowly Q11, and HTC adds the Touch Pro, the Touch Viva (an unusual choice considering HTC's intention to send it to emerging markets), and possibly the Touch 3G. Nokia will be offering the 5800 XpressMusic in the middle part of the year, Moto will be bringing a pair of 5-megapixel phones in the VE66 and ZN5, and finally, it seems RIM is signed up to bring the all-GSM 9520 Storm with WiFi -- a feature sorely missing from the Verizon and Vodafone versions -- and a 3G remix of the 8200 Pearl series flip that'll have a front-facing cam for video calling (yeah, no joke, they offer it up there). So look, AT&T, you have two options here: either crib off this presentation and make it happen, or we hope you get bought by Rogers. Your choice.

meh
Aguiluz @ Dec 25th 2008 1:42PM
Meh, yes, I agree. Rogers Sucks because they bait you with low fees that skyrocket so fast and you are locked into a 3 year contract.
We pay $400 a month to Robbers when we used to pay a fee of $50.
Flashpoint @ Dec 25th 2008 2:03PM
meh...indeed.
Blackberry used to have the best pocket PDA on the market for business users.
Now...everyone else is catching up.
ILoveApple @ Dec 25th 2008 3:40PM
Exactly. These phones will all literally be 'last year's technology' by the time they're released. This is the kinda stuff that really makes me feel sad for you Americans/Canadians. Oh, and your 2/3 year contracts... Damn!
DaShaggy @ Dec 25th 2008 4:59PM
@Aguiluz
Dont know what you're talking about, cause I'm with Rogers, and have a contract, and I have an amazing plan. Each year I pay less than the previous. Have you thought that maybe you're not that bright if you're paying $400 for the same thing you were paying $50 for before? lol...
And you do realize they can't raise your rates once you're in a contract right? unless you change your plan or get additional services? With Rogers, you just gotta be smart or they'll take you for a ride..

@ Aguiliz
Moron.
Learn to read ur contract. Or listen to what the people behind the counter tell you will happen in 3 months time; rather than salivate over ur new phone, and data plans that you probably don't even really need.
Did I mention you're a moron?
Rogers hauls ass. Period. From cells to home phone, to high speed internet, and HDTV. I'm not just saying this because I'm an HTS Rogers Tech either. I Subscribe to all of the above listed features, and all well below $400. With no employee rebate.
I doubt you pay $400 a month... thus making you a QQ'ing asshat, but if you really do pay $400 a month, then you truly are a moron. Seems to be a reoccurring term for you... Moron.
matt merritt @ Dec 26th 2008 12:25AM
Either someone is extra defensive (and probably a little butt-hurt) or someone is a moron (and probably a little brain-hurt).
In any case, they both seem to be Canadian.
phinn @ Dec 25th 2008 1:27PM
lol you'd wanna move to Canada for that?
ProfessorDex @ Dec 25th 2008 1:34PM
Don't forget our Eskimo Women!
Mobius_1 @ Dec 25th 2008 1:40PM
Why the heck are you still in the USA then?
huh @ Dec 25th 2008 2:13PM
Engadget likes to troll its users with bizarre spin.. these are mostly feature phones, there's no serious consideration as a handset as your consistent, trustworthy, be-all mobile companion. Let's see something interesting Android or even Apple, or some disruptive entry, along with a good plan designed to provide all the customer's voice and internet needs at a fair price, and that'd be drool worthy.
RioRyan @ Dec 25th 2008 7:34PM
Come on, you can't say no to this!

Seriously? I know that getting it released in America has been a huge fiasco (the real shipping date for the X1a has now been moved once again to 1/9/2009), but if they're going to release it 18 months after it's been released...Why even bother when there will be so much mobile tech coming out? How can an 18 month old handset hope to compete?
Unless "if not sooner" means they're releasing it next week.
dodo @ Dec 25th 2008 3:46PM
well I've had the chance to use the x1 here in switzerland. the finish of the device is awesome nice, keyboard very useful - but the OS sucks even though it looks fancy and feels good the lag between touching and activation is just not alright...so for me it's a No-Go Device unless you've got a braindamage which makes you think time passes by veeeery quick so you do not realize that it takes 5 seconds that an application or panel gets activated...
jak0b @ Dec 25th 2008 1:31PM
hello Mr. blurry cam
Roman @ Dec 25th 2008 1:34PM
Apart from the fact that Rogers customer service sucks balls, and they are pretty much a monopoly, and they have shit rates, and you'll have to sign a 3 year contract.
ProfessorDex @ Dec 25th 2008 1:41PM
....and so you won't be getting one?
kyphros @ Dec 25th 2008 2:04PM
Sounds just like AT&T.

Looks good

Minilap @ Dec 25th 2008 1:40PM
But Ted Rogers rapes your mothers, still wanna move to Canada for that?
o rly @ Dec 25th 2008 2:23PM
Not anymore. Ted won't be "raping" anyone from his grave; his children however...
...and the desire to move to Canada would easily be trumped once you received your first data bill.
Andrew @ Dec 25th 2008 2:26PM
My data bill is fine, got $25 unlimited data on my Storm from Telus. Before that I had unlimited data on my Windows Mobile device for $15/month.
katatonic @ Dec 25th 2008 1:41PM
Aren't we past flip phone phase already?
iI(because iEye is banned) @ Dec 25th 2008 1:52PM
didnt they say the same things about candybars wayyy back then.now look all the new super-candybars (i
phone, storm, bold, omnia, etc) now flips are just getting smarter.
hrt @ Dec 25th 2008 1:43PM
You don't wanna move here all ready? This makes me wanna ditch my shitty pay-as-you-go 7-11 Speakout Mobile phone and actually get a contract... Damn those are some nice phones. (That was a lot of hyphens) MERRY CHRISTMAS
a ham sandwich @ Dec 25th 2008 2:03PM
these phones do sound pretty awesome, ill give you that. but given rogers' history of having exorbitantly high prices on everything from monthly plans to upfront phone costs, ill leave my interest as nothing more than cautious optimism.
Shugg @ Dec 25th 2008 2:08PM
Wow so wifi on storm. Indeed verizon did give USA customers the shaft, by taking away one of the best features ,so verizon . It's the network. That fux people over!!!!!!
Kris120890 @ Dec 25th 2008 2:13PM
Wi-fi wasn't on the storm anyway.
Al @ Dec 25th 2008 6:37PM
What does that say for Vodaphone who also gave users the Strom without WiFi.
CleverEndeavor @ Dec 25th 2008 2:09PM
i would prefer a more reasonable carrier than rogers to get those phones (sprint, maybe?)
urbanmode @ Dec 25th 2008 2:29PM
hey USA u bitch, I'm Canadian and I'll be on top (I'm lying big bottom here). I am a Rogers customer, used to hate them, but now I have a fab bb plan including 6g data/month for $30.CDN. You got Obama we r getting a new 3g wifi bb flip, umm hopefully Obama will last 8 years unlike any cell phone.
Valicore @ Dec 25th 2008 2:30PM
Yeah, no. Rogers could release a phone that calls home to the mothership and I still wouldn't go near one of their stores without a cross and some holy water.
Ian @ Dec 25th 2008 2:34PM
I already have the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, and I'm in Canada.
It's like an iPhone, except that it's better in a lot of ways that Apple fanboys would never admit.
digitallysick @ Dec 25th 2008 7:42PM
Nice, do you like it? i got a E71 recently and i am happy with it. If that phone is similar but with a better cam i would be happy, whats the web browser like? can you view full html pages? thats what i want
Shugg @ Dec 25th 2008 2:36PM
@kriss what the heck u talking about ,vzw disabled wifi in USA .rogers will enable the wifi in Canada.,dee dee deee.,STOP BEING VERIZON FaNBOY aLREAdy!!!!
Kris120890 @ Dec 25th 2008 3:27PM
How can I be a verizon fanboy if they don't offer their services to me. Oh and no network has a blackberry storm with wi-fi so that indicates that wifi is not in the chipset. It's been taken apart by hundreds of times and no one has ever found any wi-fi capabilities.
The next version of the storm is rumoured to have it.
alex @ Dec 25th 2008 2:45PM
I don't see the Googlephone in the leaked slides. Might have to move to the states.
Phoenix @ Dec 25th 2008 2:50PM
Hmm... Why is Motorola listed twice? Couldn't you just stick all 3 handsets together?
Adam Zey @ Dec 25th 2008 3:08PM
So, I'm in Canada, reading about new phones from a Canadian carrier, on a US website, that got the news from a Spanish website. Right...
Gad Get @ Dec 25th 2008 3:25PM
So...?
Dave Hunt @ Dec 25th 2008 3:53PM
That thought also went through my mind lol, very bizzare way to get local news.
simon @ Dec 26th 2008 12:15AM
It was on HoFo first. HoFo is Canadian. Take off eh.
Fernando @ Dec 25th 2008 3:37PM
Why the canada hate in the comments? Those phones are better then most US carriers will have around the same time. Or show me two 8 megapixel at&t branded phones.
Plus the 5800 subsized, it will have to be cheap as chips.
ILoveApple @ Dec 25th 2008 3:46PM
No it won't. If I remember correctly, when the N95 8GB was released on Rogers it was something like $500 WITH contract....
