Creative's Zii "Stemcell Computing" is not likely to be awesome
Look, we have no idea what's going on here, and you know what? Maybe it's better that way. Creative -- a company always on the edge -- has clearly gone off the deep end. A new teaser on its site promises that "Everything you know is about to change..." and forwards on to the dubious Zii.com -- with a logo that couldn't be more obvious about its Wii inspiration. Four leaf clovers shimmer and shake, and a trademarked term chills us to our very core: Stemcell Computing. Yeah, how about no. If this is at all interesting to you, we recommend registering for updates soon, before this company manages to implode the Earth with its mad, mad science.

While the post may be sarcastic; going by the page's design using plants, I'm pretty sure the technology would use meristems from plants. If the technology works, this means that there would be an abundance of supply and new plants could be grown for those taken away for this "Stemcell Computing." Ultimately, this would be a really ecological solution.
or its creative and it has nothing to do with stem cells or anything useful or advanced at all.
cell Computing? Does it work on vista?
Or just work like anther zen?
Pay online?
As I've got the zen x-fi and the zen converter http://www.convert-video-dvd.com/dvd-to-creativezen-suite.html#115 to put dvd video to zen, I don't think the zii will be popular on Christmas season.
But can it play Crysis?
@DiRT
the question is can it connect to your brain.
Is this creative as in the creative PMP People. Are we talking New technology based off of plants or tech that's really green or is it not tech at all and it is actual a venture into stem cell research which is the least probable.
Oh and can someone tell me if endagdget is going through maintenance because every so often I can't access it. Using different computers at different houses. It's only been happening for a about a week. The last time it happened was about 20 Minutes ago for around 20 Minutes.
I hope this is vaporware. Too freaky to be real (I hope).
You sure this isn't marketing to a new Wii stem cell extracting game... looks promising ;-)
oh, man actually that sounds disturbing.... disregard that lame attempt at humor.
The negativity in this article is really discouraging considering the blogger knows NOTHING of what Creative is planning to offer here.
*sigh*
I completely agree.
Finally, someone with fucking sense. It only took what, 40 posts?
No. There's no such thing as sarcasm in the world.
I think Creative is planning to make a sound card that eats babies.
Checking the USPTO reveals the Creative has trademarked the term specifically for "printed circuit boards; integrated circuits; and computer software, namely software for enhancing the performance of computer hardware."
Sorry, that wasn't meant as a reply to you, but a new comment altogether. I was going to reply to you, though, and say that I don't think the negativity is completely unfounded. There's both a product name and logo that strangely resembles an existing technology product. A trademarked reference to stemcell computing, which is pretty weird. And regurgitated ad copy that claims that whatever this is, it will change everything.
Sure, it's obviously a teaser, but it's still stupid. Maybe the product won't be stupid, but the webpage is.
Any particular reason why anyone would think this has anything to do with human, let alone embryonic, stem cells?
It could simply be a misinformed word play on the association between clovers and stems and a quad cell computer aimed at creating a buzz among equally misinformed consumers.
"Yeah, how about no." My God, I just lol'ed all over the computer.
"Everything you know is about to change." For one, I don't think my dislike of blatantly untrue and boastful ad copy is going to change, but hey, I've been wrong before.
Sure, this could obviously be some contrived vaporware (especially considering that its coming from Creative). On the other hand, it certainly seems to imply the first practical/commercial attempt at DNA computing. If so, it might be as historic a moment as the ad wants to suggest. In that case the four-leaf clovers might represent the quaternary numeral system of DNA computing. Let's just hope its an actual computer they've constructed and not Mechagodzilla.
They should have called it Apple iZii..then the apple fanboys would be raving all over the place
engagdget writers must add a "its not apple stuff so dont read it, it's just a bash the non apple produc articlet"
Not so fast, Creative! After Wii, you need to go through Xii and Yii first :)
God creative, dont fucking try to recreate the Wii as so many companies have tried. If you do, i lost all respect for you. id rather see a new HD player from you then something so fuckin stupid. or maybe this is what they want us to think...hmm....
Remember this is from the people who brought you the Zen "Mosaic"....don't get your hopes up!
but if Creative somehow got into a deal with Nintendo to do content delivery.... that'll be interesting.
Very interesting! To those doubters, it is posted on the main creative site as well. Perhaps it's some sort of distributed computing system they're planning? There is some computer based stem cell research projects out there. I agree though, it it is a new cell computing technology, both names are... ugh
what happened to the xii and the yii?
so an update, i dotn kno if anyone wrote in or not cuz im to lazy to read all this shit but...
"Creative will be unveiling a new processing chip at CES 2009. The chip will be called the "Zii", a name not unlike that of Nintendo's console. The chip might have a simplistic name, but according to their teaser site, it's going to change everything. The Zii will be using "Stemcell computing", whatever that means. That term has been trademarked by Creative just a couple of weeks ago, and it may raise a few eyebrows. We don't know exactly what Creative means by Stemcell computing, but we're definitely curious."
so there we go, wasnt what we were afraid to think it might be, its actually might be something useful. were see, a couple days to go to CES!!!!!
I signed up for updates. My curiosity has been awoken. Good morning Curiosity.
zii dot com is gonna be a link to will it blend: infants
@OP: I thought this was a tech site? Take your religious shame elsewhere. Stem cells and scientific advances should be welcomed by the tech community.
Is this like when I get stemcells all over my keyboard looking at pron?
you get gametes on your keyboard,
unless your some kind of unisexual creature that fertilizes his own seed and sprays it out on the reception of pron.
What happened to Wii++?
mp3 player shaped like 4 leaf clover ...
The scientists who say Zii?
Are German.
Well for starters, this has no resemblance to the Wii.
Its a new processing chip that they will be releasing during CES 2009.
=]
At least it's not T Cell computing.. Then I'd be kind of worried.
Yiikes!
i read somewhere that researchers developed RAM using a plant virus. not saying that's what Creative is unveiling, but since it has something to do with a new processing chip, it seems plausible. i wouldn't mind having a computer that ran on some sort of floral virus. instead of giving off heat, it would give off pleasant smells, like the decomposing of infected plants.
LMAO If this was apple announcement i bet engadget will embrace it and praise them to the sky for such a wonderful idea. But hey this was creative so engadget goes around bashing creative without even knowing what zii is.Well done engadget you all had reach a new level of bootlicking..
I think Bono has purchased Creative and will be releasing a Bit torrent server for the Nintendo Wii.
Alternatively, Creative could do the following:
Remember that they own alot of TALENT NOT DOING SHIT at Creative Labs and Cambridge Soundworks.
Between the two of them and the XFi team, they could make a killer receiver with an integrated client for Zen network and even integrate a linux os with a browser. Plug in an external HD to an expansion port and you would have something that belongs in the HT Room.
But, that'd be too much to ask, as it involves taking a chance and having different sections of a failing multinational company with all the promise in the world to frickin do something other than fade away into obscurity faster than S3 and Via.
Seems I remember that Nintendo is about to launch video streaming of some sort. The Zen X-Fi (16 and 32) will now search for media 'hubs' and stream audio. What if Nintendo/Creative have a partnership to stream or push video over the X-fi. The wii wouldn't actually have to have a player installed on it, just serve as an access point?
Seems to me like the first "i" represents male and the second one represents female
They are the one that brings Soundblaster, MP3 player and so on. If they meant everything is going to change. I do believe there's definitely going to have change. But they have fallen deep, hope they can come back this time as it could be their last chance.
Typical Engadget article, obviously since they don't know anything about the product yet they just put a negative spin on it. I also agree about with the comments made by sven vollstag, superhobo, and tony that if a company dares compete with Apple then it must be shunned and put down regardless of the product. Creative's music players are great and maybe if people would try something else instead of whatever there friends have or what the TV commercials tell people to get then maybe people would realize what a great product Creative puts out. In some ways in is better then the ipod and such. Also Creative has been around for quite and while and is well known for the sound cards, etc. How about giving Creative a chance before you bash them.
damn i can only uprank once :/
"Creative's Zii "Stemcell Computing" is not likely to be awesome"
How can you say this if you don't even know what it is yet?
