Nintendo Sixtyfree Lite-R elegantly crams N64 into a luscious handheld
Ben Heck's apprentices are showing their true colors again, with modder SifuF churning out a real winner over the holidays. The Nintendo Sixtyfree Lite-R just might be the most elegant portable N64 that we've seen to date, with a clean, low-key design, beautifully integrated buttons and a cartridge slot that's about as non-cumbersome as possible. Of note, there are no internal batteries to speak of, thus it's forced to rely on an InfoLithium (or any 7.2v supply) clipped on the rear. Tap the read link for a pictorial look at the build and final product.

woopee.....
Flashpoint @ Dec 27th 2008 1:12AM
How the hell are you suppossed to play that thing?
I gave up on Nintendo entirely when I first saw the Gamecube controller.
Seanross @ Dec 27th 2008 1:23AM
GCN controller was comfortable as hell what are you talkin about?
Darius @ Dec 27th 2008 1:37AM
@Flashpoint
The GCN controller is one of the best controllers i've ever used. The N64 one was kind of love it or hate it (I wasn't a fan) but I still use Wavebirds on my roommate's Wii all the time. Great controller.
Cheers

Too many buttons, makes his autism act up...
CleverEndeavor @ Dec 27th 2008 12:34PM
i hate the GCN it broke far too easily, and besides the gamecube isnt even that good anyway. i preferred the first-gen xbox controller over the GCN.
Joanna @ Jan 5th 2009 11:52PM
It plays N64 games in a handheld! What do u care! N64 was the first nintendo system i played as a kid!
JohnTitor @ Dec 27th 2008 12:20AM
smash bros with multiplayer support or it didn't happen
elliiot @ Dec 27th 2008 12:27AM
Anyone have an idea of where the battery life would range with a certain amount of power?
JohnTitor @ Dec 27th 2008 12:28AM
its not battery-life, its ups-life
triton @ Dec 27th 2008 2:37AM
Actually with the LED modded Psone screen and n64 the total draw would probably be around 2 amps/hr (2000mah) if not less. a standard ni-mh 7.2v RC Car battery (3300-4800mah usually) would power it anywhere from 1.5 to over 2 hours.

That d-pad doesn't look too conducive for Super Smash Brothers...Then again, you really can't do much with multiplayer here anyway.
A job extremely well done otherwise :)
Grey Acumen @ Dec 27th 2008 6:54AM
It's not the dpad that's the problem, hell you only use it for taunting in smash bros, the problem is that c-stick. Even though I liked the initial impression of it, and goldeneye could be incredibly fun, in order to jump in smash bros, you have to press up on an analog stick instead of being able to press a button, which is highly annoying. Same problem with zelda games, in that your item buttons now have to be accessed from a stick.
It's only a minor nuisance in those examples, but where your real problem comes is when you need to press 2 c buttons at the same time. you can press all 4 cbuttons at the same time on a regular n64 controller, but with the cstick, you're screwed on that field; one c button at a time, and that's all you get.
teej @ Dec 29th 2008 10:53AM
i didn't read the article (blocked), but maybe if you press into C-stick to the corners, it mirrors the press of those two respective C buttons. also, maybe you can push the C-stick in, mimicking the simultaneous pressing of all four C buttons. idk just a thought.
PW @ Dec 27th 2008 12:42AM
Superb.
yopladas @ Dec 27th 2008 12:48AM
I never liked these kinda of mods, until now.
Well done!
FTR01 @ Dec 27th 2008 12:51AM
whoaa, that is crazy lol, i would want my N64 modded into THAT!
CraigJ @ Dec 27th 2008 12:57AM
That doesn't suck.
gahahha @ Dec 27th 2008 1:06AM
that's beast. if only it didn't look like it was made by Fisher Price.
Anthony-E @ Dec 27th 2008 1:12AM
Or just put CFW on your PSP and play N64 emulators on it. Or basically any other handheld. There's emulators on everything now.
Guzzie @ Dec 27th 2008 1:23AM
Nothing compares to the real hardware, especially for the N64. Some games don't run to well even on the PC emulators.
slycooper_rocker [patapon defence force] @ Dec 27th 2008 2:22AM
have you played smash bros. on a psp? or any n64 game for that matter. no audio, insane lag...it's really not worth the memory space. the pandora probably will be able to handle it better but even then...
birthday is 1990 @ Dec 27th 2008 1:12AM
But Can It Play Conker's Bad Fur Day?
Why Yes, Yes It Can.
AndrewAmazed @ Dec 27th 2008 1:14AM
I think that looks hot..but the placement of the buttons and what not don't seem to be ergonomic...
I'd still buy one!
Eric @ Dec 27th 2008 1:18AM
Since Majora's Mask is seen in the cartridge slot, I assume it has the Expansion Pak (if I'm remembering the name correctly). Maybe the games demonstrated require it, I'm not sure.
Cody @ Dec 27th 2008 2:17AM
"Features include: Dual 3D sticks, D-Pad, L button, headphone socket and expansion pack!"
Line above the first picture. :-)
Evangelion @ Dec 27th 2008 1:31AM
WIN.
Covarr @ Dec 27th 2008 1:45AM
The three prong controller was NECESSARY for games like Pokémon Stadium, which needed the left hand on the D-Pad and the right hand on the analog stick for some of the minigames. This handheld N64 can't play the minigames, and can't import your gameboy saves, making it entirely USELESS for Pokémon Stadium games. :(
andres @ Dec 27th 2008 2:09AM
its a good thing nintendo made games other than pokemon stadium, isnt it.
poematik14 @ Dec 27th 2008 2:01AM
I would so buy this.
dj moon @ Dec 27th 2008 2:55AM
OMmfnG! =@o
With this I could (finally) beat those last (overly) difficult levels of (the original) "Perfect Dark"!
(Without calling in sick, shooing the wife & kids away, etc;)
STINK @ Dec 27th 2008 3:44AM
That's pretty damn nifty, and a good reason to attack Gamestop's bargain bin!
jacubious @ Dec 27th 2008 4:34AM
Good game to put on there too. Perfect Dark was my favorite n64 game.
LiQuiD_FuSioN @ Dec 27th 2008 11:20PM
Hell yeah! PD = Instant win.
About time someone out there agrees that this game is a straight up classic. =)
f3rg @ Dec 27th 2008 9:45AM
About as clean and elegant as a fat ma in a tutu. That thing looks like cheap '80s garbage. Try again, Nintendo.
AnyKey @ Dec 27th 2008 10:49AM
looks like someone doesn't understand the notion of modding a game console to fit in a handheld case.
f3rg @ Dec 27th 2008 11:02AM
Yeah, I realized that after I read about it again on Gizmodo. I guess I skimmed this article too quickly.
xSTEx @ Dec 27th 2008 11:30AM
That is so good, so small, me wants.
ishism @ Dec 27th 2008 11:53AM
yeah
ilja @ Dec 27th 2008 12:27PM
Where can I buy one, a lot better games than the DS and the games are a lot cheaper in gameshops. Please make it a mass production.
Agent .25i @ Dec 27th 2008 1:37PM
That's pretty sweet.
I wonder if it has the expansion pack built in... would be useful for the game Perfect Dark; like they have pictured above. Perfect Dark, probably one of the best games for the 64.
The trigger buttons on the back look really nice. And the whole unit looks like it's comfortable to use.
MRLN @ Dec 27th 2008 2:09PM
All of the buttons were stolen from a Gamecube controller!
This makes me wish Nintendo would do to other classic N64 games what they did to Super Mario 64 DS. I'd love to play OoT on a handheld.
thetimeof12 @ Dec 28th 2008 11:12PM
False
the A and B are very much not from a gc controller
Imran @ Dec 27th 2008 2:34PM
Nintendo sixty fouuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrr! Damn I want one of those!

Hackettman @ Dec 27th 2008 9:44PM

emirabal @ Dec 27th 2008 10:53PM

shoman24v @ Dec 28th 2008 11:47AM
Perfect Dark is the best FPS ever made, period.

Why does it have to be white????
