Inelegant hack connects T-Mobile G1 to iPod dock
Come to think of it, this mod wouldn't even be necessary (though, we suppose it would still be useful) had HTC bothered to put a 3.5-millimeter headphone jack on the T-Mobile G1, but alas, we're stuck with some random ExtUSB port. In order to make that output jack compatible with the litany of iPod peripherals (namely sound systems), the modders over at WebNetta figured out what pins linked to what in order to connect the G1 to Made for iPod gear. Best of all, the secrets of the connections are all spilled out in the read link should you care to try this yourself, but please, tidy things up a bit if you do.

Kinda useful I guess, I want the android mall to be at full force though..
or you could get a extusb -> 3.5mm adapter?
granted it doesn't provide power, but it's way better than this (why an ipod dock anyway)
"in order to connect the G1 to Made for iPod gear"
is made for ipod gear really that special? that was kind of my point.
I wouldn't be surprised if some Chinese outfit jumps on the specs for this and starts making a G1-iPodDock adapter, yours for only 5.99.
that is what i was thinking Eldiablo.
I don't see why people are saying this is pointless. I had an ipod and therefore had a lot of accessories for it. When I got a zune it sucked because some i had to use the 3.5mm jack and no power and others just flat out wouldn't work at all. This makes a lot of sense and I think that if someone made an adapter or several connecting various different dock connector types to the ipod dock they could make a ton of money. People would also be a little less fearful of moving away from ipods.
What an inelegant hack connecting this T-Mobile G1 to this iPod dock!
Where on earth did you manage to find such poignant words?
I've been practically moved to tears with your summarizing poetry.
Lol.
Useless!, Why don't just make a dock for it?
Oh man...the G1 is so fucking cool, I wish they could release it some other parts of world than effin US n A =/
Why are companies releasing stuff over there? You barely have 3G coverage and different bands for different companies...massive sigh
Stop saying "massive" all the time! Seriously!
that is sooo not true lol
UK has it
why would pay extra for ipoddock stuff, a headphone jack would be 1000times more usefull
oops typos..
Why didn't they use wire casing? Why do I need to see the tools you used to make this?
I don't get why so many mods insist on showing us the 'raw' result, it doesn't prove anything, clean that shit up.
Seriously.
They were bored, and played with wires. They didn't do it to make you cum in your pants. Give the dudes a break.
There's a much better way to do this. Use the "Y" adapter that gives you 3.5mm and power split. Chop the stupid iPod dock connector out and put the extUSB end of the "Y" in it's place. Internally connect the audio and power ends of the "Y". Done.
Of course it's inelegant; it's consistent with the device, which is itself inelegant.
Oh wow, I didn't think the iPod was that inelegant.
To each his own, I suppose - I'm a G1 owner and I've shown it to
"regular" people (non tech-blog types) and i've gotten impressed reactions
to it's look and functionality.
Not everyone thinks it is as bad as it is made out to be on the tech blogs...
(for the record, i have an iPod touch so, its not about the iPod/phone vs G1)
just my opinion...
SHUT UP
Darren, this is whats called a Prototype....
reason #523 to get an iPhone: Thriving 3rd party accessory maker community
The accessories aftermarket is one HUGE advantage the iPod and iPhone have over all other players. There's simply far greater choice, and hooking things up through the dock connector is dead easy.
I doubt we'll ever see car integration systems with "made for Android" labels on them.
Ofcourse you won't. Android will be running on many different types of phones, so there won't be any standard.
I agree with u,iPhone is about 5 years ahead if the global game, when it comes to docks etc
They already do, it's called a USB connection.
Also, after the Cupcake update, Android will also be able to connect using A2DP, giving Android twice as many standardized connection options as that other phone.
Seems like a lot of work for very little pay off.
Not like the sound is going to be any good.
You're absolutely right. He should have paid $500 and used the copper from a set of Monster Cables. How silly of him.
another louzyy effort of cells trying beat or be like iphone.,.,i give up.indeed it didi revolutionize like jobs said in jan of 07
g1 docks will never take off, doesn't have a true multipin lower output,.like ipods ,.dee dee deee, keep dreaming g1 fanbois, keep dreaming,
I hate when mobile manufacturers try to "modernize" and "revolutionarize" their products. I totally hate the stupid micro-pico-nuno-USB shit on my Kaiser. One needs gazillion converters to plug their favourite ear-budz in, leaving me with billions of meters long cords that I have no f***ing way to hide away when in a gym, in a car, jogging, travelling the public etc...
It isn't an important enough hack for me to end up f---ing the G1 up and voiding the warranty. BTW, I hate my G1. HATE it. Don't waste your money.
Calm down apple fan boy, didn't you know you could return the phone if you didn't like it or was it too hard to read some paper work?
