Adding to a small stack of rumors about a supposed
iPhone nano, case-maker Vaja today quietly added the category to its website (pictured after the break). Frankly, we're not sure what to think. There are a number of ways in which Apple could produce a cheaper phone or alter its subsidy deals, so the idea of an iPhone that's
simply smaller makes very little sense. Yet, here we are showing off the site of a reputable accessory manufacturer with a brand new phone listed -- ostensibly just a teensy version of the iPhone 3G. Of course, this is probably just rumor, speculation, lies, corruption, signs of an unquenchable thirst for power, and a glimpse at the machinations behind one of the greatest conspiracies mankind has ever known. So, we're posing the question to the biggest brains of all: the Engadget reader. Is Apple working on an iPhone nano?

@Daniel...i think you hit the nail on the head....Why oh why would apple purchase a domain for fun if they were not going to get people to search for it. I think the Nano is going to appear..i think it will have like others have stated a numerical keypad for texting like 90% of phones rather than a querty phone. But at the end of the day..we can speculate as much as we like but until we see the keynote then why bitch. Its apples last keynote..they are most likely going to blow you away with some pretty impressive stuff....iphone nano, new mini, new imac and for the love of god lets hope the iphone firmware we have all been waiting for!
My 2 cent!
@ Chris, im sure they do Chris! i here so many people saying, nice phone, but too big for me! Apple's 3,5" iphone display is one of the biggest in the market. Samsung, HTC, all other competitors have mostly smaller screen size. And if the iphone is gettin cheaper as well, this could be a fair competitor in this lower segment! To be honest, I do like my big iphone, as it is thin it always fit in my pocket, so no complaints from me! but i think many people do prefer a smaller iphone....
Well, I don't know how likely it is that the Nano is coming, but I've just seen there is now an iPhone Nano range on the mobile fun website
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/cat/Apple-iPhone-Nano.htm
I wouldn't be surprised if it is legitimate. What if Apple were to surprise it and sell it for $199 unlocked so we could use it on whatever carrier we choose? The current Iphone is tied to AT&T maybe this is their way of getting round any legalities by releasing a Nano I-Iphone and keeping the big boy with big blue?
Where's the "Yes, because that would be stupid and annoying to anyone who was not a fanboy" selection in the vote?
Im sure the case maker will LOVE all the traffic youve sent them now though! (for theyre fake product)
Ocham's Razor people.
Vaja wanted to generate traffic so they added a fictitious Apple product so people would go to their site.
Whether they come out with a nano version or not, i could care less.
What would get me to buy another iphone however is a better quality resolution screen...or the iphone HD. Of course, if an iphone was ever made for Sprint, i'd be all over that too and dropping at&t pretty quick.
Wait... did Steve Jobs say there is not going to be an iPhone nano? Because I wont believe there will be one until he confirms it by saying there will NOT be one. Like the the iPod will not show photos. And the iPod will never do video. Wasn't there even a "phone? from apple? what do you mean phone?" at some point?
I'm not hate'n on apple at all. it just seems to me that has been the track record of new product introductions.
flame away.
WHY?
They could make the phone significantly (30%-ish) smaller by just getting rid of the black border/bezel on the top and bottom of the screen.
If they did that, and branded it as the iPhone nano, that'd be pretty awesome.
Then they could keep the approximate dimensions of the current iPhone, and make it ALL screen.
Of course any deviation from the iPhones current screen resolution will prove to be a nightmare for all the apps written for it... it'll be interesting to see how this all plays out.
All I know is that I won't be buying another iPhone unless it offers a larger screen with more resolution. 2009 will see some pretty amazing phones. :-)
If they make it smaller like some of the cases indicate, them they would have to put a physical keyboard on it. I don't really care though, I just bought my new 16GB iPod Touch and a new black enV2.
If you look at the case "rendering", the bottom port oppening is slightly smaller than on the 3G version, do you really think that Apple will go away from the habitual ipod port for a smaller version?
My guess is that they are working on a nano so they can actually sell it for $99 and double or triple their sales. Parents also would be more likely to get the covetted iphone for their kids at a price like that.
Also, Apple always likes to put out stuff (like the previous nano) that works like the bigger version in a smaller package.
Listen people, when iPhone released it was supposed to be a smart phone not a handheld gaming device so stop complaining about the small screen! I don't know about you Americans but a contract mobile doesn't appeal to UK users, we prefer a cheap phone with a good top up tariff so this is probably Apple's answer to this! It's genius! Over in the UK it costs £340 odd to buy the iPhone 3G with no contract! Only the super wealthy can but this. This could also show consumers that not all Apple's products have a *dip into your savings* price tag. I am not completely sure but I think there is a very good chance.
Oh and thanks Engadget, wouldn't go on the web if it weren't form you guys!
:)
total BS of a story.
Have any of you spent some time on this website to see how up to date their line up is?
they dont even have the last generation ipod nano cover! THey also dont have anything that was released within the last 3 months that is of interest.
No way they would have an idea about the iphone nano.
dont believe me, just visit their website.
Alrite what is with the "netbook" answer. Now tell me.. why would apple start working on a netbook? Isn't the point of a netbook to be a computer thats light portable and decently fast. Does that sound kind of like...oh, i dont know....ALL OF THEIR NOTEBOOKS.
#2- apple is "probably" not working on a iphone nano. due to the fact that it would have many problems such as the fact that the screen would be TINY!
#3- apple could spend its time better by working on an iphone 4g to be honest with you.
#4- WHO CARES. if they come out with an "iphone nano" fantastic! If it was a load of BS who cares? some idiot fooled us. Wouldn't be the first time.
I reckon this is possible...and in my opinion a great idea.
I've been itching for a nano phone forever.
Apple make good products, and they make them beautifuly simple.
I have an I-Touch and would love the IPhone, but no way in hell am I paying such premiums on the tarrifs ( Ireland )
Even to buy the thing is equal to around $800 dollars.
So i've been waiting for an Android based handset or even the Nokia 5800 ( my third choice )
I would love the Nokia 5800 because of its features.
but I hear the resistive screen is a bit dodgey and the interface is laggy and not as intuitive as the Iphone ( in my opinion )
I was about to buy the Nokia 5800 until I head this Nano rumor...so im holding my breath in anticipation of a Nano at MacWorld( please God let it be true )
I think its possible because ...
Firstly they could keep the resolution and just have a screen with 4 or even 3 lines of Icons including the bottom row, instead of the 5 like the regular IPhone.
They could maybe take a few cm's off the top and bottom where the home button is.
Remove 3g ... and have an Edge connecting Web experience like on most Dumbphones?
Everyone loved the first IPhone that ran on edge...so why is everyone crying foul about this on an Nano phone ?
Remove App store ...it wasnt on the first Iphone....and everyone still loved the original....so why the bitching now ?
for Text entry ...either use a landscape mode like the Nokia 5800 or Use an alphanumeric pad...like a T9 style , for single handed use ...like EVERY other phone on the market.
Include a 8 gig of onboard memory.
And finally ...have it on a non contract basis as well as a contract.
maybe $99 or less on contract...and $200 contract free.
this would be the ultimate killer to all the other handset makers.
Now in fairness....
how is this "impossible" as some of the morons on here proclaim ?
Spot on Stecarey
Some of the idiots on here pretending to know what they are spouting about.
"oh small screen = too small" ....eh hello !?!
People seemed to have survived on the 2' inch screens for the past 10 yrs !!!
granted its not as sxxy as looking at an Iphone screen.
But the Nano Phone (as it were) would have a 2.8" inch screen ...this would be ideal with T9 or Alfanumeric keys for entering texts and numbers ...DUH !!
Just check out the Neonode N2 to see how a small touchscreen can work VERY NICELY
It is obviously going to be a thinner iPhone maybe a little smaller too.
