Ever since the Dev-Team kinda sorta
promised that they would have a neatly packaged iPhone 3G unlock ready for release by the year's end, we've all been waiting on pins and needles, counting down the moments until freedom was in hand yet again. Now, a cryptic message on the crew's blog has been followed up with a not-at-all secretive image (shown above), which shows that whatever magic they've got going on will work with the latest (v2.2) iPhone 3G firmware. According to a related writeup at yellowsn0w, we're clearly told that the unlock tool will be made available by midnight PST at the latest, though we're hoping those guys have their AM / PM mixed up -- otherwise, you might be waiting until noontime tomorrow. At any rate, now you've more than a day off and black eyed peas to look forward to tomorrow, right?

Well i am planning on buying a 3g i-phone, but with this software i can unlocket like quickpwn, i just wanna know i dont wanna buy and the not unlocked it

I currently use QuickPwn to unlock to version 2.2.
took me less than 20 minutes and there was virtually no major work on my part neccessary except holding the face button when prompted.
What could be better?
You wont be able to unlock it if you arent at the specified baseband minimum.
This is why I bought the hardware unlock sled. Got a free programmer with it, so I can reprogram it in the future.

Uh, from what I understand, it'll be an app installable through Cydia. So, you run quickpwn which is available for Windows to jailbreak it, and then install the unlocker through Cydia, so there won't be any wait.
I don't follow the iPhone all that closely though so I could be wrong.

Ugh, please please please don't give that yellowsn0w.net any more exposure. They have nothing to do with us (the devteam) and are just doing exactly what quickpwn.com did, providing an ad-filled "blog" that "relays" our news, often inaccurately, from what looks like an official name (we had the foresight to snap up yellowsn0w.com but didn't grab .net or the twitter handle in time :/).
We have not officially announced the 12PM PST date, and have not announced that it will work on all firmware versions. Please verify your sources carefully, and please don't give any more coverage to leeches who are taking advantage of our free (even ad-free) product to make money.

I tried to use quickpwn to unlock my iphone, it seemed to work...except the phone function it-self stopped working, so I had to reset and reinstall everything...
So, I am a tad skeptical about ever trying anything with this particular phone again.
I can live without the inconvenience.

I unlocked my iPhone 4gb for the first time last week since like... almost a year ago... I just wanted to put custom ringtones on it again. It proved to be damn near impossible. The old way, you just used the program (iBrikr?) to upload any music file as a ringtone. I'd cut up songs in whatever program, use this program to upload them to the iPhone, then bam, they magically appear in the ringtones list. So easy. I found a couple weird programs that could sort of do that, but were tied to websites with accounts, crazy stupid shit just to put ringtones on the phone. I also read a lot abuot converting music files to this or that format and then renaming the extension. I couldn't get that to work either. To top it off, you know the crashing bugs that were rampant pre 2.1? You'd open a program, it would try to load everything, then boot you back to the springboard? Yeah, my phone did that. I couldn't open my contacts or dial numbers. The only way I could call someone was to send them a text and press the Call button at the top, and even then, I couldn't get to the phone controls... meaning I would have to either leave a maximum length voicemail, or soft reset the phone just to end a call.
Anybody have any good guides on getting some ringtones on a freakin iPhone?? Without paying? Because what if I want to use something not from iTunes?? Like a Megaman tune?????????

Dude, I add custom ringtones to my iPhone 3G 2.2. You don't really need a "hack" for that. You actually use iTunes to make it from your own mp3s. Here's a video tutorial:

An update from teh Dev-Team!
"Update 3: Now to explain the above screenshot. The soft unlock has undergone many changes in the last two days. The most significant one: the soft unlock will now be only for baseband 02.28.00 (the most recent baseband). Yes we’ve been advising everyone to avoid updating their basebands, and in general that will always be the best policy. Not every baseband version is guaranteed to have a hole through which we can inject the unlock.
Update 4: (a) The yellowsn0w Cydia package will be available as soon as our devteam member in charge of the repo wakes up to fix a file permission error. (b) Once it’s out, those users with SIMs that have apps and other menus on them will need to do that extra step we’ve been talking about. They’ll need to pull and reinsert the SIM once after rebooting the phone to engage the unlock. Even though it’s needed only once per boot, it’s still a nuisance and we’ll be fixing that ASAP. (c) You’ll know if you fall into that “extra step” category if your carrier doesn’t show up within about 10 seconds of the slide to unlock screen. (d) Yes it really is for baseband 02.28.00. That means everyone can use it now! (e) Happy New Year!"

Cool! So I can do an apple update, and still use it! But don't forget, apple will patch this soon enough, so their warning is still true for the next update. I did not like the idea of using an older baseband, as I don't know if that causes worse performance.

hey i dont know if this means any thing to any one but there is a guy on craigslist now that is saying that he can unlock your 3g with softwear for $30 bucks .
