Microsoft preparing for new layoffs?
A new report from Fudzilla claims that Microsoft is getting ready to lay off 15,000 employees, or about 17% of its worldwide staff. The axe will apparently fall on January 15th, exactly one week before its second quarter earnings report, and they expect MSN division to be hit hardest, while the successful Xbox crew will probably make it out relatively unscathed. Meanwhile, an anonymous blogger who goes by the name Mini-Microsoft and claims to be an employee well-versed in the goings-on inside the company has been fielding questions from other purported Microsoft workers on recent cutback concerns. This past Monday he posted a handful of anonymous comments saying that the rumored layoffs aren't happening -- at least not in January -- although a re-organization might be in the cards. Both reports should be taken with a grain of salt, but one thing's for certain -- Windows 7 is gonna rule.

Not vista 2, it's more like vista's attractive, muscular, and agile cousin who vista envies and strives to imitate but it is held back by it's uncontrollable weight gain and a few stomach ulcers here and there.
sorry, meant windows se7en, not vista 2. My bad.
Ever growing mainstream Ubuntu?
Last time i checked, linux in general grew about ~1% when it comes to market share.
As far as I can tell, it looks like it's running a similar core to Win 2008 server which is an amazing piece of software.
Win 7 is more like a desktop version of a great server OS.
I don't mind Vista on a fast PC but I think Windows 7 needs to be a helluva improvement if it's gonna get more people on board.
I'm also using a MacBook.
I, as a hardcore Linux user, hate Ubuntu. A few years ago it used to be fun, but now it's not... It has only grew significantly in one thing: Excess fat. I made the switch to Linux when Vista came out, because it was too bloated for my PC and I didn't feel like buying a new computer just to run a new OS that does not actually do anything new. (Besides looking prettier)
Now Ubuntu is just about as fat and slow as Vista.... I run my own lightweight remix of Debian Sid, with bleeding edge versions of everything. Will never replace it with any other OS.
Lightweight Debian + Enlightenment e17 = WIN
(Oh, and by the way, Microsoft copied Enlightenment with the "minimized windows are icons" thing. Really, look for old videos of e17 or Elive) (And BTW2, Enlightenment can run on your 1998 computer with all the bells and whistles. So quit saying that Win se7en is fast.)
So, spelling out Microsoft's next OS "Se7en" is the new thing? I guess I'm kind of behind. :-/
No, it just looks cool.
no thats come from david fincher se7en movie
Ah, I see. Is there anything that wikipedia can't do?
Hey gonintento!!
Are you relative with Bill Gates or all your money are invested in Windows Seven Shares ?
If you Just have seen other OS's you would know how not unique are Windows Seven.
I personally use Windows Vista Ultimate and I know that Windows Seven and Vista have many but MANY similarities with windows Vista as well many similarities with OSX that are more noticable to Windows Seven.
So stop saying this crap about Windows Seven being So Wonderful and So Unique. except the fact that I 've lost TWO 500GB Drives and one Graphic Card after installing after installing windows Seven for your knowledge.
They are sure Unique Betas to me in that part.
@Blastar
Lost two drives and a GPU? That was careless.
I suspect you might want to have a look at your power supply or mobo rather than blaming your operating system unless, of course, you're talking about drivers which, as you should know, aren't exactly going to be complete for a beta.
So which is it?
Before you troll, make sure you know your stuff. win 7 is based off of the server 2008 os which is MUCH lighter and quicker than vista. since they use a similar kernal, drivers should be, more or less, interchangeable aside from maybe a small glitch here or there. The icons on the taskbar, while similar to osx's, should be thought of as an extension of quicklaunch. I do admit that peek is alot like expose, but i find it to be more efficiant. about the hdd and graphics cards, what type of mother board and power supply are you using? I have never heard of an os 'killing' hardware, especially to that extent. that's also why you always install betas on secondary hard drives, so you can keep your data.
Stupid J@ck@ss Gonintento !!
I have an ASUS P5KDeluxeWifiAP
the Power Supply is a Silverstone 850W
the HDD were Westendigital 500GB enterprise editions.
and the GPU Was a Nvidia GTX260 from EVGA
Plus I got a 2000W UPS and any other Power Power Protection
tech at the Power Panel in My House.
So if you think that it was because of a power problem I think you are wrong.
I m running this machine with Windows Vista almost two years now with zero failures Hardware or Data
And stupid Jackass I DID install W7 in a secondary HDD. So next time you ll do a assumption think again and if you want to see a troll just go and look your self in the mirror b@stard.
There is no question that Microsoft needs to streamline its operations some particularly in the MSN division. However, if the rumors are true, it is alway sad to hear about people losing their jobs because it affects them, their families and many other people.
please dont cut any DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS
MS is an American company. Of course they're going to fucking cut developers.
Obviously the managers and pm's are more important that the people that actually do any real work.
Being Top Heavy is the only way to succeed!
I prefer to use Ubuntu
.
That's gotta be more than 17% of that sentence that got cut.
I'm glad they're finally reevaluating their stuff, and trimming down the MSN group. I've been working on an article about Microsoft's MSN unit, and if that unit is really relevant anymore to today's web needs. Is it place that provide a great source of quality content? Or is it a place that really helps provide some ad revenue, with little care about the content? Based on what I've seen, it'd be the latter. I did mention several tips on how MSN could shape up to be a better source of quality content, but it'd take a lot, and Microsoft might as well just scrap it. You could already find better material elsewhere, and there's nothing too unique about MSN. It's pretty sad. It's 2008, and people are still using 'MSN' to refer to Microsoft's Windows Live Messenger. That pretty much shows how relevant MSN is.
Windows Live on the other hand, is shaping up to be much more awesome, and hopefully they're keeping those employees or taking the MSN employees to a platform that might actually have a future. Sad to see yet another piece of Internet nostalgia going down the drain, but does anyone honestly go to MSN.com to look for good content?
That would be a foolish move on their part. In a recession when you still have strong revenue and are miles in the black you should spend rather than save. Making big investments now puts a company well ahead of competition that has to reduce resources. That is not to say that Microsoft shouldn't reevaluate certain projects and shift developers around, but when you have a talented developer pool (and say what you will about their marketing and management decisions, the guys in the trenches are exceptional coders) you don't get rid of them even if you can their project. You move them to other projects.
That said, there are a lot of people at MS that have been there for years despite their incompetence and the company should use this opportunity to axe them (see afore mentioned reference to idiotic marketing and management). #1 on the chopping block should be Balmer, whose idiotic decision to focus on fighting google and linux remove the technology focus from the company. Software companies make their biggest advancements when their is a technologist at the helm rather than a businessman (yahoo being the exception). MS really needs to put Ray Ozzie in charge and can Balmer.
All I can say is recession.
for corporates and enterprises who are still sitting on the fence holding onto XP, what extra stuff can Vista/Win7 do, than being visually appealing, media friendly and asking for security permissions on every mouse move?
... and @WiiGee, I agree ... Pls dont cut the [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMU0tzLwhbE ] , Who will fix the bugs?
[trust me, i want new and new versions to come out, with extreme hardware requirements and breaking all existing versions of software; tech engine has to keep on running]
n happy to new year to all of you :-) hope it will be a better year
The question is: When did a Microsoft OS Work properly ?
The Answer is none after DOS 6.22 !!!!
go wash your mouth!
With extra strength chlorine!
Guess Microsoft is doing about as well as the rest of the economy.
Worldwide layoffs? More likely US layoffs.
Time has come to unplug the Zune business that has been losing money for years..
"Windows 7 is gonna rule" ???? What is that engadget ?????? Hey when did u guys stop licking Job's ass ???
But who is licking Ballmer's ass? You? Windows 7 = Vista Pro! LOL
From my friends in MSN, this is so close to true it's not funny. In the UK vast amounts of contractors have been given the heave-ho. Many teams are now quite understaffed.
Work generally at MSN is really quiet. As a primarily advertising driven site - they've been hit pretty hard by the down-turn.
So they'll finally lay off Ballmer and bring back Bill?
I keep hearing rumors that the 360 will be the last console Microsoft makes. That might be true if things keep getting worse.
I wonder if these where the people who where going to lose their job anyhow with the Yahoo deal?

Windows 7 sucks the big one!
Didn't notice any difference over Vista TBH. Don't think I'll be wasting my money anytime soon.
As for people losing their jobs ...tough shit. Welcome to the real world!!
