You might've heard that crazy rumor making the rounds that Microsoft leaked the
Windows 7 beta on purpose to build some positive buzz, and while there's no real evidence (or likelihood) of that of any sort, the seemingly-magical build 7000 is certainly doing well for itself. Following up on
wide praise for the fledgling OS,
ZDNet's Adrian Kingsley-Hughes pitted the beta up against XP and Vista in some informal "real-word" tasks like boot up, shut down, file maneuvers, installations and other common tasks. On both test systems, an AMD Phenom 9700 setup and an Intel Pentium Dual-Core E2200 number (with ATI and NVIDIA graphics, respectively), the Windows 7 install soundly bested XP and Vista task by task, with few exceptions. Performance testing is never an exact science, but it's clear that Microsoft is taking performance very seriously this time around -- we can't wait for the next conveniently-leaked beta to bolster this rep even further. Next on the benchmarking agenda?
Real World: Brooklyn tasks.

I am first-time blogger on this subject. Been running Vista Ultimate on 4 systems since it became available with excellent results. Rarely have a problem with the OS, but have an occaisional application hang. Vista is a really great OS. Have never understood all of the complaints that users come up with. I suspect that most are from users that really do not take the time to learn the OS. Can't wait for "7".Reading this site makes me think that a bunch of teenagers populate most of the blogs. I can't imagine an adult making some of these comments. Try writing an that contains 30,000,000 lines of code sometmes that runs as well as Vista and is all things to all people. Like I said "come on 7"
Meet Windows Mojave
I wonder what shade of blue they'll use for their next BSOD launchpad LOL??
Hey guys!
I was wondering if anyone knows anything about my question. Im buying a new computer (Dell) with the new i7 processor. I need as much power as I can since I do a lot of 3d animation, modeling, rendering, film editing, etc.. All my work is related to the visual effects industry so I really need something that can handle my work. Ill be spending about 4 grand and so far it looks like I'll be switching to windows 7 when it comes out.
My question is, if I buy a computer now with Vista 64, next year when windows 7 comes out, would I be able to upgrade to 7 without any problems? I dont want to have the problems that XP had when upgrading to Vista.
Thanks for your time.
If Windows Vista x64 works on your computer, so will the 64-bit version of Windows 7. Unlike Vista which was a major architectural upgrade from XP (5.1 to 6.0), Windows 7 uses the same underlaying technology (6.1), so the drivers and programs designed for Windows Vista will also work on Windows 7. They will certainly also release drivers tweaked specifically for Windows 7, but in the case you can't find them, simply install the corresponding Vista drivers and everything will work.
It is said that the reason why MS didn't artificially bump the version to 7.0 is that some drivers are hard coded to work with Windows NT 6.x, and going up to 7.0 would have broken the compatibility. So they justified the name by saying it's the 7th release of Windows, which isn't true (1.01, 2.x, 3.0, 3.1, 95, 98, ME, XP, Vista, 7; that's already 10 releases not counting the older NT versions). Then they corrected themselves by saying it's the seventh release of Windows NT (3.1, 3.5, 4.0, 2000, XP, Vista, 7), which is accurate, but still I think the name should have been different this time and keep Windows 7 for version 7.0. I suppose they didn't call it Windows Vista SE because they wanted to get rid of Vista's underserved bad reputation, and they ran out of imagination for made up names.
Thanks PsychicDave for your time!!!!
I'm actualy pretty happy to see this. Windows is finally feeling pressure. Time to innovate like Windows 98!

So nice.
Vista isnt a bad operating. most people slagging off vista either havent use it or have little knowledge of it. vista will run just as well as xp if you have the right spec pc. just like games. newer the game, the more demanding it is. OS are just the same. vista is newer than xp and has more features, so it is bound to use more resources. i have no complaints about vista 64. less blue screen errors than xp, looks betters. multitasks alot better than xp. oh and NO DRIVER ISSUES WITH 64 BIT (alot people say the are loads of driver issues with 64 bit ITS A LIE).
i have a copy of windows 7 build 7000. going to install it tonight. i dont expect that many improvements over vista.
tip: windows 7 beta will run faster cos most the features are disabled. eg no virus software. gpu drivers etc. the final build will run slower because it will be doing more. hopefully not much slower. i just want boot up times to be shorter and ill be happy.
oh and maybe ATI catalyst Control to start up faster.
looks like KDE to me
I'll be trying this out soon on a dev box I keep at home. But I'm wary of anything built on the Vista kernel (Windows 7 milestone 3 had nearly the same kernel as Vista). Vista ate up alot of resources for no reason, inserting NOP instructions to idle the processor under load and allocating large amounts of memory for "cache". I have no desire to deal with an OS that gives itself resources (that it doesn't use) over the programs I actually want to run.
Can someone tell me what this all means for someone who has Vista Home Basic (the ONLY operating system that was available on any computer--except for Apples, of course--when we were looking) ? What should I be doing? Do we have to actually pay for the "improved" Windows 7, since Vista was such a problem? Thanks for your information.
I just purchased my new puter, old one crashed. Will I get some kind of deal or coupon for Window's 7? I was perfrectly happy with my XP. It was IE that killed my puter.....

I have a HP TouchSmart PC with vista.
When I download itunes on my computer it takes my E drive off which is my CD & DVD burner.
Is their anything I can't do to make itunes work and have my E drive to.
I know i shouldn't put this Beta on my most used computer but how does it do with sound and drivers on Vista or XP computers? When I upgraded to Vista it took two months to get everything working. Just wondering if the beta works with the normal setup of Vista or XP drivers.
