Mac mini update with dual display support, banner unfurling rumored for Macworld festivities
We've got less than 48 hours until Apple's last Macworld keynote, and the rumor mill keeps hinting that Phil's gonna announce new Mac minis, which so far are purported to have the Macbook's NVIDIA chipset, aluminum casing, and an SATA optical drive that can be swapped out for a second HDD. Go ahead and add dual display support to that list, which is what Apple Insider is speculating based on their sources saying the new minis will sport both a mini DisplayPort and a mini DVI connector. Additionally, the site has managed to snap some shots from the Moscone Center of the expo being set up. There's a picture of a monitor showing what's presumed to be a live feed of the keynote rehearsal with a blurred figure that kind of looks like Al Gore, and inside the south hall there are several mysterious banners concealed in white cloth. So pretty much status quo, though is it just us or do the banners seem to look a little tired and thin this year?

@ Kris120890 - concealed not covered... (def: "not accessible to view").
**Banners** look a little tired and thin?!
Wait till you see his holiness SJ in the cameo appearance at the end, with 'one more thing'............
Jobs will be there.... just not delivering the bulk of the keynote.
If he is not, it is a sure indication on the statuw of his health.
Im guessing he'll be there for a "One More Thing..." announcement.
Mac Mini with 9400 chipset, DDR3 and Montevina cpu, all under 800 and I will switch to mac.
$800?
You would pay $800 for a Mac Mini? I know I wouldn't.
@whynot
Why not?
I don't remember the banners being white - I thought they were always black and they usually don't have those tassels. I could be wrong though.
Aww shit. I'm commenting on banners - I need a drink :S.
Guys quit joking around here. This is a BANNER about to be unveiled here. This is easily one of the biggest news stories on Engadget here. I expect liveblogging of each inch that banner gets unfurled, for we can guess what's on it.
my hopes:
open up OS X to use on any hardware
mid range desktop tower (id still go homebulit, but it would be nice to see them listen to their users)
revive open darwin
You know Apple will never open up OS X.
i hope the new graphics card provides some good upconverting capability. The mini makes a great HTPC. I will get another one if this has some better capabilities. Have a full PC just makes it a lot better than the Apple TV.
I'm sorry but; Really Engadget? Really?! Banner-unfolding?
Really?
unFURLING.
My prediction:
10 minutes - Talk about how well iPods and Macs did over the holiday.
"You know, the popularity of Macs is driven by OS X Leopard - The worlds most advanced operating system. We think we're already ahead of our competitors with Leopard, and we're ready to go a step further with Snow Leopard."
20 minutes - Snow Leopard demo, features, enhancements, price, release date.
"But it's not just Snow Leopard. The apps available for Macs are far superior in every aspect compared to our competitors."
20 minutes - iWork/iLife refresh.
"As you can see, there's never been a better time to buy a Mac."
15 minutes - Mac mini refresh
2 minutes - Quick iMac refresh mention
10 minutes - MacBook Pro 17" unibody refresh, discussing the new "zinc" battery technology;
"But there is...One More Thing."
The rest - iPhone nano.
spot on
You forgot that the part that Jobs will come to present the one more thing..
u forgot to insert the words:
72x "boom"
41x "isn't that awesome?"
66x "amazing"
Who wants to guess what will get more coverage on Tuesday/Wednesday: MacWorld or CES.

This is precisely what I want.

Ion chipset - 9400m + atom 599 pricetag.
/want want want.
I know it'll never happen, but I'm going to let the wishful side of me comment on this: I'm thinking iPhone 3G with a slide out keyboard.
^_^ I kid, I kid.... but I also want...
Is that tassel?
I LOVE TASSEL
They are really pulling out all the stops, I mean tassel, come on, seriously
This is going to be the best Macworld ever!!!!
Quad core Mac Mini should be the least.
You heard it here first: the bag of hurt is over--Apple is down with Blu
I'll just say three words.
Dalmatian spotted mini.
I've always thought that Apple could make a really good windscreen-mount GPS, to rival TomTom, Navman, etc. They've got the touchscreen sorted, they have a gadget with GPS already, and people would buy them in droves.
Firewire:
Lets see if the new mini has firewire or not, if it has no firewire, the sales probably wont be stellar. Many people use it as dvr, and most of the elgato stuff (which they seem almost to have a monopoly on the apple side regarding tv set top boxes) uses firewire only, only a handful of dvb-t sticks use usb!
For me it is if it has firewire, instant sell, if not, I have to skip it due to the mac mini being used as a frontend to an elgato box here!
(There is no other vendor currently doing DVB-C stuff on apple, and even on the pc side there is only 2-3 vendors doing such stuff)
with new mac minis at the oven, i would really like to see an updated appleTV (1080p capable!!!).
maybe with cable card and DVR capabilities. (ok this is to dream to high).
i think it might not be announced at this keynote, but i guess it will be a natural update after the minis.
cheers
Apple TV + Mac Mini + Time = Worth it...
I sure hope its not iMacs... I like them as they are... but bigger SSDs would be nice because lets face it... its going that way.
Im hoping for price cuts on MacBooks too, and maybe on time capsule too...
Software update for iTouch wouldnt go amiss too...
just me thinking that?
Steve Nano?
