Two new ones have arrived today from the labs of
LaCie, and neither are destined to ever end up inside of your PC. Up first, we've got the slightly speedier d2 external DVD±RW drive with LightScribe, which toasts discs at up to 22x and connects to PCs via USB 2.0 or FireWire (400, presumably). For those in need of HDD-based storage, the glossy black Hard Disk MAX comes with a pair of 1TB drives that can be set in either a RAID 0 or RAID 1 configuration with the simple flick of a switch on the back panel. There's also a USB port on the front for additional expansion, and the USB 2.0 socket 'round back is what links it up with your computer. Both are available right now for $119.99 / $269.99, respectively.

Want! Especially with the fuzzy blue lights!
Scratic @ Jan 5th 2009 8:41PM
I dunno, reminds me of one of those lowrider Scion things.
lathode @ Jan 5th 2009 10:31PM
Shoulda put the usb port on the back. Ruins the clean look.
Jason @ Jan 5th 2009 10:48PM
Yes, but upon clicking through, I found that the sleeker, slimmer 1T model comes sans the port.
Game_playa @ Jan 5th 2009 8:45PM
Looks nice.
noyp @ Jan 5th 2009 8:49PM
It does! But I don't know how. Your average 4 year old could've thought of a shiny black box.

It taught me how to use tools.

Just don't touch it. Ever.
Mobius_1 @ Jan 5th 2009 8:56PM
2TB??? I'll never fill that! (Second part is what everyone always said of any new hard drive :P)
I'm looking for a backup solution since losing all my work and music and savegames would be waaaay too painful to ever recover from. This looks like win, beatiful win, too.
RichardBronosky @ Jan 6th 2009 12:25AM
Then don't consider this a 2TB drive. Consider it a 1TB redundant drive pair.
For the non-techie, here is a way to remember the difference between RAID 0 and RAID 1: The zero represents your chances of ever seeing ANY of your data again if EITHER drive fails.

I love my Neil Poulton LaCie 1TB ext HDD. I have found that every mfg of HDD's has a HUGE group of folks who warn others about their bad experiences. Basically, all product lines have bad batches and defects. You just rarely hear about the good experiences. 10-1.
Hi Kenneth @ Jan 5th 2009 10:57PM
so is it really worth my money...im looking to buy the Lacie [not this one but] do you have good experiences with it?
solarpos @ Jan 6th 2009 8:44AM
@Hi Kenneth
Yes, I have had nothing but success with it. I have previously owned a WD book, Iomega and a Iogear Ion. All have failed me and this is the only one to keep ticking. Now as in my post above I bet there are WD, IOGEAR and Iomega users that have ext HDD's without failures as well.
The thing I like is being able to take this puppy back to costco without a question or issue. It's quiet, sleek, huge storage and since I'm on OS X, easy to partition and use with SuperDuper and Time Machine.
PyRo1509 @ Jan 5th 2009 9:15PM
I love storage wars...
I have 4 TB of space in my desktop... and thats 3.5 TB more than I need..

If they're putting a USB port in the front, what exactly stopped them from putting more in the back? Have they ever used a Mac before? Everyone knows Steve is stingy with his ports...
d889 @ Jan 5th 2009 10:44PM
yay i cant wait to fill up 2TB's at the blazing speed of usb.......

WARNING: LaCie drives are prone to die prematurely. Out of 10 1TB Lacie drives, three (!) died within one year. Among fellow video guys LaCie is pretty much a joke. But oh they're so pretty at the Mac store! ...

The picture is misleading. It is in fact the size of "The monolith". You can see a tiny human figure in what appears to be a firewire connector, which in fact is a full fledged spaceship docking bay.
xValentine @ Jan 6th 2009 7:35AM
The USB port in the front just killed it's awesomeness.
eric @ Jan 6th 2009 8:30AM
I would be really interested in buying this if you could use the two drives separately, instead of in a RAID configuration. Anyone know if you can?
Justin @ Jan 6th 2009 10:20AM
Doesn't anybody care that it only provides USB 2.0 connectivity? eSATA should be standard on almost all desktop external HD's... Try this one on for size: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/PerformanceRAID. Yes you're going to be paying more money, but the difference in speed is worth it IMO.
Bad Beaver @ Jan 6th 2009 10:49AM
Let's see... it's a glossy LaCie without FireWire. Uhhmmm.... no.
Wwhat @ Jan 6th 2009 11:14AM
A switch on the back switches between RAID 0 and 1? I foresee disaster, when you have it full of data you or something/one accidentally flips the switch and gone is your data.
