D-Link's DCS-1130 WiFi monitoring camera sends footage to the web
Yeah, it's kind of creepy, but we're sure D-Link had the noblest of intentions when crafting the DCS-1130 802.11n Wireless Network Camera. Said device offers paranoid homeowners the chance to login from practically anywhere and view live streams of their camera, and the 16x digital zoom is sure to give you a totally pixelated look at whatever stranger happens to meander around in your yard before moving on. Better still, those who simply can't go a moment without a look back home can view the live streams on a 3G cellphone, though a wireless router supporting WPS must be involved in the configuration. Mum's the word on a price, but it should be noted that a wired-only version (DCS-1100) will also be available for those who don't trust the airwaves.

I don't see what your did there.

Hello new baby monitor.
Joseph @ Jan 6th 2009 5:40PM
yessir, no more staying home to watch the baby.
set it and forget it.
PDubNYC @ Jan 6th 2009 3:23PM
Maybe I'm missing something, but what is so creepy about this? Sure it can be used for all kinds of things, some good, some bad, but the main objective of the thing, piece of mind, is a good one.
I think it kind of says something about you when your first thought about something like this is how a deviant would use it.
SOOPERGOOMAN @ Jan 6th 2009 3:35PM
Any deviant would use this by putting it in a female bathroom and disguising it as an air freshener, maybe the local ym-ywca ladies change room could be the order for the day.... LOL j/k...or am I?...
HalfJoey @ Jan 6th 2009 3:53PM
There is nothing creepy about it really. Engadget just has poor "writers" and needed something "funny" so say.
This camera could come in handy for a lot of things. We'll see about the price.
SOOPERGOOMAN @ Jan 6th 2009 3:33PM
Now I won't have to login to my ps3 with remote play and start a video chat just to check on my place. Because if I couldn't login then I would know that I'm being robbed or had a power outage.
Might pick myself up one and one for me Mom so that she can use at her bird feeder and finally get a picture of that ever elusive Great Northern Flicker that comes to her yard every day...
TechJunky @ Jan 6th 2009 3:36PM
Anyone seriously interested in network cameras should have a look at the Panasonics. Great quality.
batfastad @ Jan 6th 2009 5:22PM
I'm going to chip in my vote for Axis cameras. Bought a bunch of 207W cams for site surveillance, works great!
Eddie @ Jan 6th 2009 3:42PM
Would be cool to see what my dog does all day when I'm not there. I remember when I first started to leave her out of the the cage I was worried that when I got home the house would be destroyed.
Yousty @ Jan 6th 2009 3:54PM
Exactly! My 10 month old puppy bit through one of my toilet water lines a couple weeks ago while I was at work. It would have been nice to know that right away instead of arriving home 8 hours later to discover my entire first floor with an inch of water on it.
Very curious to see the price on this.
Adam @ Jan 6th 2009 3:43PM
I believe the importance here is that it is 802.11n. I don't think there are any other 802.11n wireless network cameras. The Panasonics mentioned earlier are only 802.11g as far as I know. As for the wired version... meh... just another wired network camera.
Z @ Jan 6th 2009 3:56PM
This is perfect for keeping an eye on my victims in the basement. Thanks D-link!
Dan Fruzzetti @ Jan 6th 2009 4:00PM
Seriously nobody here has a baby? This is an ideal babycam as long as it's reasonably secure wirelessly. I have a Panasonic wired camera which my wife and I use to watch the baby with any sitter or while either of us is away from home.
Right now my daughter is live on my Ericsson w880i and let me tell you -- it was VERY hard to set up a work-around that enabled me to watch her using this camera.
Perhaps the next thing we need is a GSM webcam.
DssTrainer @ Jan 6th 2009 4:13PM
wtf.. yes its a wireless network cam.. they've been making them for years... more non-news from you engadget?!? is CES that bad this year that they are re-releasing gadgets from 5 years ago? First the retractable USB drive (woooo) and now a run-of-the-mill network camera. Yea I've had a Panasonic panning camera for the past 5 years watching over my dogs and home.
NEXT!
Adam @ Jan 6th 2009 5:11PM
is your panasonic 802.11n? yes network cameras have been around for years, but 802.11n should be a big step up from 802.11g
DssTrainer @ Jan 6th 2009 5:17PM
nah its "g" but I guess "n" is a big thing..
It's kinda like DVD and Blu-ray.. yea Blu-ray is better.. but most are happy with DVD so blu-ray is failing.
fistpittingnork @ Jan 6th 2009 4:34PM
babe*
fistpittingnork @ Jan 6th 2009 4:36PM
"Seriously nobody here has a baby?"
This is a nerd blog... think about it.
SOOPERGOOMAN @ Jan 6th 2009 4:52PM
Who's got time to make babies when we're in here all the time. Bunch of lowly non getting laid
greg @ Jan 6th 2009 4:51PM
Why D-Link? Take a look at the Axis 407W......
Still kind of pricey though......
inteller @ Jan 6th 2009 4:54PM
these thigs are ridiculously expensive for what you are getting. wifi cameras are nothing new...you'd think by now the pricing would have come down.
rob @ Jan 6th 2009 5:36PM
Does anyone know if the aforementioned Panasonics or Axis camera's do well at nighttime? That's been my biggest challenge so far - turning one of these into a baby monitor for use at night.
BigEye @ Jan 6th 2009 7:30PM
I don't get laid, because I have a baby. I'm also a daily Engadget reader. I'd like one of these, but would need to upgrade to 802.11n. :(
Dogs that eat pillows and baby that is learning to stand, walk and climb.
chef @ Jan 6th 2009 10:50PM
Isn't 802.11n backwards compatible with 802.11g and 802.11b?
Brian @ Jan 7th 2009 4:02AM
How is it powered?
greg @ Jan 7th 2009 3:38PM
1 - You should be able to use an 802.11n device on an 802.11g network.
2 - Neither the Axis nor Panasonic has IR capability, so low light performance is challenged (you would have to experiment and see whether it is "good enough"). I have the Axis, and it does ok, but you can't make out a lot of detail in low light.
3 - the Axis uses a standard power adapter. So does the panasonic. Some Axis cameras can use an ethernet cable for power.
The drawback to the panasonic I looked at is that it is only 802.11b, not g. So all you have to chose from is WEP, which is next to useless. The Axis supports WPA and WPA2.
The Axis also supports motion detection, audio triggers, and will ftp or email the files once triggered.
I don't work for Axis or have any business or personal relationship with anyone who does.
Anjali @ Jan 28th 2009 10:22PM
I have a 2 babies and love gadgets. Anyone have any experience with Zonet??? So far that looks like the best pick.
