Lok8u launches Nu?M8 GPS child locator watch at CES
Little known Lok8u has traveled all the way from the UK to be in Vegas this week, but it's certainly not for the despicable reasons you think. In fact, the locations services company is setting up shop at CES in order to debut its Nu•M8 GPS child locator, a so-called "innovative new best friend for parents and children." The device is said to be the first of its kind created specifically to be worn by children with the technology "cleverly concealed within a child's digital watch." Granted, the styling is questionable for youngsters over 9 or 10, but by that age they ought to be toting their very own beeper, right? Of note, the watch will also send an alert if it's ever "forcibly removed," though it'll cost you £149.99 ($218) for the peace of mind come Spring.

???
bk7 @ Jan 6th 2009 7:38PM
As long as the parents are forced to wear that fugly wristbreaker too.
Flashpoint @ Jan 6th 2009 10:50PM
the possibility that the kidnappers will recognize this watch as a GPS locator is relatively low - but still possible. I believe the only safe way to leash your kids is an injected tracking device.
@LStacey @ Jan 6th 2009 6:02PM
Oh that's not weird at all...
Apron strings, anyone?
WhyFi @ Jan 6th 2009 6:04PM
Horrible. Company. Name.
bolezhinkov @ Jan 6th 2009 6:44PM
yeah no kidding, kind of narrows your new product options. maybe a flashlight with gps next?
dennis @ Jan 6th 2009 6:08PM
Because nothing says you're a good parent more than tracking your child's location and giving him cancer of the wrist at the same time.
BigD145 @ Jan 6th 2009 6:11PM
Paranoid UK.
miko34 @ Jan 6th 2009 6:16PM
I'm thinking none of these bloggers are parents.
Aside from that note... the watch looks a lot bigger than any normal kids watch.
Do kids still wear watches?
GROWN MEN WHO PLAY GAMES ARE SLUTTY NERDS!!! @ Jan 6th 2009 6:23PM
Says the man who has a simpsons avatar.......seriously, that is very childish!
THJ @ Jan 6th 2009 6:34PM
Left and right hand at the same time? You're a naughty, nerdy slut.
miko34 @ Jan 6th 2009 6:39PM
What the heck in tarnation are you talking about?
What does "childish" have to do with anything I said?
Think before posting a comment.
And The Simpsons are twenty years old now. I think that qualifies as an adult.
BigD145 @ Jan 6th 2009 7:29PM
"Oh look. My child is in South East Asia. Well, at least I know where they are."
or maybe
"Oh look. Here's the GPS with a cut band. No child in sight, though."
or you could just be a responsible parent and actually keep track of them yourself. If you're too busy to protect your own child with your own eyes, ears, and hands, then maybe you should have considered not having a kid in the first place. A GPS watch won't stop anyone from being kidnapped, rapped, and/or murdered.
miko34 @ Jan 6th 2009 7:35PM
You're right, BigD.
We should all quit our jobs and follow our kids around 24/7. I'd hate for them to be "rapped".
PSN: Aggie_CEO @ Jan 6th 2009 6:31PM
yea.......so I dont have a need for this........as I had all my kids implanted with nanites before they were even fully created via the implanted nanites in my sperm.....
StickMaker @ Jan 6th 2009 6:35PM
Seems to me no child will wear it without a huge bribe from Mom/Dad. And even then they'll remove it as soon as they are out the door.
bolezhinkov @ Jan 6th 2009 6:45PM
totally. just leave it at your friends place for the night and then go out and party!
recn @ Jan 6th 2009 6:49PM
I need this for my dad who has alzheimers and wanders a lot.
RadicalxEdward @ Jan 6th 2009 7:33PM
Hmmm, a child locater called "new mate". Nope thats not weird at all.
et3rae @ Jan 7th 2009 7:58AM
Or, it could be used for parents who have to give their child to his/her other stupid parent that might just flee the state with said child since the parent is not a resident of the state the child lives in, and has no residence in said state. It's called "peace of mind" for the worried parent that must give up his/her child to someone else's care.
Dr.Urban @ Jan 8th 2009 6:04PM
I bought the child locator from the duracell commercial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGCv7RzEwR8), the tag is like 1/10th the size of the watch. It actually works great, & I put one on my dogs collar
jmk @ Jan 10th 2009 6:06AM
@Dr. Urban - This only works if you are very close to the child.
@recn - I use this tracker in Holland (http://www.vindenvolg.nl) - it has also an SOS and preprogrammed call buttons. So if grandpa is in trouble - he can also let you know ;)
Dr GM Draper @ Jan 13th 2009 3:21PM
I have drawn the civil liberties implications of this appalling device to Liberty and the press. I hope the Human Rights Act will provide redress for the children -and no doubt women and the elderly too- to whose arms or legs it will be forcibly clamped before they are allowed to leave their homes. This is electronic tagging at its worst.
Rohit @ Jan 15th 2009 9:22AM
KUDOS to the inventor! Great technology. Ask the parents whose children go missing, what's the value of of getting some clue of his/her whereabouts.
sumsika @ Mar 15th 2009 10:35AM
It's works if you are very close to the child.
