Sony Ericsson's XPERIA X1a now available at SonyStyle
It's been tough getting out of the starting gate for Sony Ericsson's X1a (that's the Americanized version of the X1), particularly when you realize that it was supposed to ship en masse way back on Black Friday of last year. Oh sure, a select few have managed to procure one of the QWERTY-packin' WinMo powerhouses, but we've heard far more complaints about "no stock" than tips on excess inventory. Now, however, SonyStyle.com has the handset listed as in stock, with an estimated ship date of tomorrow. Furthermore, UnwiredView is reporteding that many of Sony's retail locations are also well stocked with the unlocked smartphone. Of note, SonyStyle is offering up the X1a in silver, but there's always spray paint if you're lusting after a black model like the one we tried out.

OMG That is expensive, SE really need to get a carrier for this if they want any kind of "great success" with this phone.
YpoCaramel @ Jan 6th 2009 12:55PM
USA =\= World, mate. Great success doesn't necessarily need the USA.
I really like the black color a lot better after seeing it in person in Asia. Bloody shame, really.
soobin27 @ Jan 6th 2009 2:08PM
I mod u down ypocaramel.
Not only is USA =/= WORLD, USA > WORLD "mate"
You guys hate on us and then when Germany pwns ur ass you ask for our help.
Stop hatin mate!
CT A @ Jan 6th 2009 3:24PM
You really are an idiot Soobin.
YPO is correct when saying great success doesn't necessarily need the US
Just look at Nokia and its phones.

and people thought Apple was crazy when they sold their iPhone for $600
shiv @ Jan 6th 2009 1:35PM
When Apple sold their iphones for $600 at the beginning, it was a locked version!. The Xperia X1a that is being sold at sonystyles is fully unlocked version where you can use this phone with any carrier you like.
Although, $799 for a phone is very expensive but then again its Sony.
SOOPERGOOMAN @ Jan 6th 2009 2:49PM
Yeah but this isn't some plastic thing that is going to lock you out of the best apps and then be redesigned a couple weeks later for a lower price. Also the local Sony in my city has 30 in stock right now. Any orders?
John @ Jan 6th 2009 1:00PM
I played with one in the SonyStyle store yesterday (San Francisco) - it looks AMAZING, but honestly felt really slow. Not sure if it was just the demo version or truly is bloated (as WinMo users complain about) but based on the 30 seconds I held it; Great hardware, awful software.
Quikboy @ Jan 6th 2009 11:14PM
Might be because this is SE's first experience at making a WinMo phone. Perhaps a future one will come with WinMo 7 and be much better.
Cranius Lupus @ Jan 6th 2009 1:26PM
that is just nucking fuzt!!! 800 bucks for that? Give me an HTC Touch Pro anyday (hell, IIRC HTC built the X1). its *goes and checks* ok its 50-100 dollars cheaper ($579-$649)
Vincent @ Jan 6th 2009 1:42PM
You can get one of these for free in any Western European company with a decent plan (say around 30 euro's per month). The American cell phone market is just very underdeveloped; and the way almost any phone is exclusive to carriers is completely bogus
Double V @ Jan 6th 2009 1:50PM
Really? It's available on SonyStyle? Wow! I can't wait to purchase this relevant product! There's definitely not so many damn phones (on carriers) to choose from. Wait, wait, wait, $799? That's perfect because its not like there's an economy crisis either.
nick @ Jan 6th 2009 1:50PM
Yeah, it's a bit sad really. I hope the new administration in the US takes infrastructure as seriously as they've previously indicated because we are falling behind in everything. Worse airports, public transit, mobile phones, worse internet connectivity, worse cars.... the list goes on and on.
SOOPERGOOMAN @ Jan 6th 2009 3:28PM
The worst Elementary, Middle and High school educations in the world. A grade 11 or 12 from the U.S. is comparable to a grade Nine in Canada. Know how I know? It's "the worst" not worse, your grammar gives you away.
Rogue_Genius @ Jan 7th 2009 10:47AM
@ Sooper
Technically, you don't know that nick was wrong. He didn't specify which party he was referring to. One could reasonably presume that he was saying [the USA has] "worse airports, public transit..." [than...]
or
[we have] "worse airports, public transit..." [than]
So while your observation is partially correct, you left out a viable alternative. If you're going to leverage a blog post as evidence of your country's superior educational system, I suggest you cover all the bases without assuming that you're right.
BerBar @ Jan 6th 2009 2:00PM
I waited all 2008 for that phone, but not to pay the $800. So, I had to get a phone with an apple on the back.
CT A @ Jan 6th 2009 5:08PM
You can wait for all of 2009 too.
Plus this is the unlocked version, the locked version will be cheaper (sans price of plan).
shugg @ Jan 6th 2009 2:26PM

I only wish this was also HSDPA 1700 and not just 2100 so it can go with t-mobile USA. what's the use of unlock phone if it can't fully use the 3G network unless you're with AT&T.
civilian @ Jan 6th 2009 6:01PM
lets see how this thing sells. I got in a fight with some dude over this. I have to wait and see. I hope it flops
