Carl Zeiss pushes 3D with updated Cinemizer "video eyeware"
Last year Carl Zeiss tantalized us with promises of an eye-level, "cinema quality" display for iPods (and only iPods). The result was a somewhat funky looking set of "video eyeware" that, to put it mildly, didn't quite catch on in the Apple community like the company's tiny lenses have elsewhere. Undaunted, Herr Zeiss is releasing a new version -- cunningly titled the Cinemizer plus -- that offers mostly minor tweaks, like improved cable management and better compatibility with external (higher quality) earbuds. The company is also pushing studios to produce more content that will show off these things' 3D capabilities, but we're guessing there still won't be much of the stuff available when these drop in March for $499.[Via Pocket lint]

Are any of the goofy glasses worthy of use?
Is this really needed by the consumers?
I wouldn't be caught dead with one of those watching a movie. Although I have several for FPV flight (immersive R/C flying). Stuff like that: http://www.vimeo.com/1987802
"cunningly" is an awesome word.
Actually this sounds like a good idea but needs to be a lower price point.
I don't see the point of watching movies and especially HD movies on the iphone/ipod screen but a set of cool glasses and buds to block out the distractions around you on a long flight or commuter ride sounds very usefull. I wouldn't reject this out of hand.
This will be great for full immersion gaming. Imagines Jason Lee's Experiments with this product... will make a freakin awesome gaming peripheral!
What about the most important detail: the resolution? Glasses like these have been around for ages.
If the resolution isn't at least 720p, we couldn't be less interested.
What happens with people with poor vision? If I already need glasses to see, won't the image be blurry?
Most of these headsets are designed to either allow you to wear your glasses with them, or adjust the distance and focus of the screen to match your eyesight.
Well, the good ones anyway.
This thing needs accelerometers and motion/ headtracking. Imagine playing a modern 3D game within it, would surely beat Virtual Boy.
I'm waiting for "Dennou Coil"-like computing in 5-10 years (hopefully).
I've been intrigued with 3D imagery and sound for years, and have recently been itching to try shoot some 3D video. These goggles are an awesome idea IMHO! Carl Zeiss have some sample 3D video on their site that you can download now and view without the goggles if you want to see the potential. Pardon the spammy plug... I just blogged about it at: http://crnl.org/blog/2009/01/08/3d-video-bring-it-on
