We just spent some quality time playing with GiiNii's Movit Mini WiFi Android tablet, which might be one of the best things we've seen at CES so far -- think of it as the Android version of the iPod touch and you'll get why we're so stoked. The unit features a 4.3-inch, 480 x 272 resistive touchscreen (sigh), and it's got a soft keyboard for text entry -- they couldn't tell us if it's running
Cupcake or not, but the keyboard worked just fine as we were playing with it. A built-in mic and front-facing camera lend themselves to out-of-the-box Skype support, there's also Bluetooth and a built-in speaker. Sadly, there's only 256MB of internal storage, but there's an microSD slot for expansion. All we got for pricing was "less than the iPod touch" -- we'll see how close GiiNii gets when this guy and the planned 7-inch Movit Maxx hit sometime in the middle of the year.
Me in a heart beat...but that might have to do with me hating apple so... but everyone has to remember that after this comes out the "2nd gen" will without a doubt be kick ass
If someone writes a Garnet emulator for Android, this could be a very nice upgrade for my Palm TX. It just needs to run a few programs not available elsewhere....
According to Gizmodo - price is $149. This is definitely looking interesting.
I'm all for more Android (and Linux in general) devices and all, but this is terrible. At that screen size, I would expect a minimum 800x480 resolution for doing web-related stuff. My N800 beats this thing on everything but price and I got it a year ago. Seriously everyone, if this thing didn't have Android on it, no one would care about it, it's just some no-name manufacturer riding the Android hype-train to shill a shitty product.
The article's pic made me think of a touch screen e-ink display. My heart skipped a beat.
149. Voip tablet with skype right out of the box & wifi honestly is already more than the touch. Add android and the apps from the market to the mix and you are well above the standard ipod touch functionality. Camera and mic! Sold!
Here is a scenario for the kids posting here. U cough out 149 you open a skype account you go to starbucks leech wifi and talk as if it was a phone. Can the touch do that!? I'm a mac user leopard is amazing and I like the design of apple products but this is not a design competition is about functionality.
it's the bee's knees.
there's wifi at work, home, airport, and the coffee shop, perfect! All I need now is an app to buffer up some internet radio so that I can play tunes in my car on the way to work :)
$149, skype, camera, sign me up.
its only $150!!!! great buy not as sleek as id like but im buyin it
...And I yawn in underwhelm-ment.
The last thing we need is a bunch of idiots trying to check their Myspace or Facebook while driving. It's bad enough when some numbwitted teenager nearly sideswipes you while texting.
I would be more inclined to take this device seriously if it weren't marketed as a Mobile Social Networking Device...your CELLPHONE is a Mobile Social Networking Device, for fuck's sake. This company is seriously catering to the lowest common denominator, and their image is going to suffer as a result. After reading the company website and this article, I don't care how "cool" everyone thinks it is now; to me, it's been tainted.
They're gonna need to do a lot better job of naming & branding than "GiiNii's Movit Mini WiFi Android tablet" if they expect buzz
it will cost 149 no contract that's what i heard thankx 2 CES and http://i.gizmodo.com/5126042/hands-on-giinii-movit-mini-the-android-tablet also said it.
After checking the official GiiNii site, found on Google by searching "GiiNii", and from watching about 5 YouTube videos, here is my opinion.
The GiiNii Movit Mini. (Some people spell it Moveit, but that's wrong!)
Features:
WiFi
Skype Out-of-the-Box
Bluetooth 2.0 (Perhaps a headset for Skype? A keyboard? Who knows!?)
4.3" 480 x 272 resistive touchscreen which sucks.
Possible flash support, though at the low price, don't expect to be playing Linerider at more than 5FPS!
Built in Microphone and Speaker to use as a phone with Skype and WiFi.
Long-ish battery life at the moment, 4 hours of full function.
149.99
Android
Doesn't look that bad, but the low resolution and crappy projected processor will boot this down.
While I'm neutral on Apple, I'll say this:
The iPod Touch is slick and sexy and very smooth and transparent,
GiiNii is ugly and doesn't scroll smoothly, but provides "better" (IMHO) functionality.
Sincerely,
TedM
You can tell it's Android because of that clock. Look for the clock. Accept no substitutes.
