CES 2009, South Hall, Booth # 30659, LAS VEGAS, Jan. 7, 2009 – SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ:SNDK) today announced a 2-gigabyte (GB)2 Rock Band 2 SD™ gaming card, significantly increasing the storage capacity available to gamers using the Nintendo® Wii™ console. This memory boost enables users to conveniently store additional content without worrying about running out of space.
"We are launching the SanDisk Rock Band 2 SD card to enhance the playing experience on the Wii," said Christopher Moore, director of product marketing, consumer products division, SanDisk. "Video games like Rock Band 2 frequently offer downloadable extras, and gamers need to have an affordable and convenient means of storing this bonus content. The SanDisk 2GB Rock Band 2 SD gaming card meets that demand."
Rock Band 2 for Wii, developed by Pi Studios under the direction of Harmonix, is fully featured with online modes including World Tour and Battle of the Bands, an innovative character creator, weekly downloadable content and more! With more than 100 songs3 on the Rock Band 2 Wii soundtrack, Rock Band 2 Wii owners have access to the most impressive music catalogue for a music-based videogame on the console. In addition, fans can expect a future roll-out of new and current downloadable content until the entire back catalogue is available.
The SanDisk 2GB Rock Band 2 SD gaming card is the storage solution that Wii gamers have been looking for, allowing them to take advantage of Rock Band 2's memory-intensive features. Since a single song can require up to 24 megabytes (MB)4 of memory, quickly filling up the Wii's 512MB of onboard storage, the SanDisk Rock Band 2 SD gaming card provides enough storage space for at least 75 downloadable songs and enables gamers to take advantage of Rock Band 2's extra content.
Beyond storing bonus Rock Band 2 content, gamers can use the SanDisk 2GB Rock Band 2 SD gaming card in a variety of applications.
* Photographers can showcase their photos by filling the card with hundreds of images and then posting a slideshow on the Wii's photography channel.
* The Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console allows users to download classic video games from a variety of past console systems, further increasing the amount of storage required by gamers.
* The 2GB Rock Band 2 SD gaming card has enough capacity to store an entire library's worth of hard-fought saved game progress.
The SanDisk 2GB Rock Band 2 SD gaming card is expected to be available for U.S. retailers this Spring, and carries a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $12.99.

At least it's not crazy-overpriced.
well, that still doesn't justify that they're branding something thats well...universal. who do they think we are...simply jack or something?
gah'd damnit...not simply jack, simple jack...
the branding is okay, it makes it easier to keep track of things.

I hope you partitioned yourself as such that you are just a reboot away from "yes Steve your holiness" again.
I'm holding out for the Monster Cable edition.
Actually last I checked not all SD cards work with the Wii. 2GB is the highest it'll take.
It'll take any *conventional* SD card. The reason that most 4GB and all above that aren't supported is because they are actually SDHC, which is a different standard.
You are correct sir. This is because the Wii software does not support the SDHC format (the HC stands for 'high-capacity'; all SD cards over 2 gig are SDHC). I say 'software' specifically because the hardware is completely compatible with the SDHC standard. Some enterprising homebrewers have written software that can use the Wii's SD card slot to read from: http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=170430 . So, all Nintendo needs to do is update their system software to take advantage. It's a case of unfathomable stupidity that they haven't yet. http://www.wiibrew.org/wiki/SD/SDHC_Card_Compatibility_Tests contains detailed lists of tests on various cards and links to source that could be incorporated by Nintendo to save them days of development time, and possibly much more in testing. They should be thanking the homebrew community for this, not trying to lock them out.
If it was a SD card that came preloaded with the songs it might be worth buying it.
But really SanDisk? Really?
Well as they say, there is a sucker born every minute.
The Rock Band sticker is clearly worth the extra $8.
To be honest, if this had the Guitar Hero brand on it, everyone would be throwing a fit.
What do you mean?
$13 for a 2GB SD Card? Best Buy, GameStop, Walmart, etc will think it's a steal.
Meanwhile, I'll get two 2GB Kingston SD cards from Newegg for less, shipped to my house for less.
The Kingston 2GB SD Card a few results below that one is a better buy.
Kingston's products are better than Transcend's, and it's cheaper.
Actually most sd card slots dont support SDHC due to software issues. Homebrew wii apps have proven this
Behind those software limitations there are likely other issues. Like perhaps the worry that direct SDHC support will make it harder to crack down on piracy.
Plothole - we've had no trouble cracking the thing WIDE open under the 2gb limit (32 megs is plenty to activate Twilight hack and hold the homebrew channel, install backup loader, etc.). The Wii is, to my knowledge, the only system on the market currently for which there is a software-only method that is widely available to play burned games, and they know it.
The only thing they're stopping with lack of SDHC support is making me swap sd cards every damn time I want to play my Rock Band 2 (eventually) or Guitar Hero World Tour downloaded tracks.
They _NEED_ to enable mass storage somehow. SDHC will work for awhile, but what we really need is to be able to shove an external hard drive up its USB port. Nintendo can make this drive as locked-down and proprietary as all hell, and I'll still buy it so I don't have to be limited to the 72 songs that I can fit on the SD card when I start the game.
The Twilight hack is just one battle front for Nintendo to attack and take down. And you can bet that they are devoting resources into doing just that. By officially supporting SDHC, they could create other holes.
This is just Nintendo's mentality. One of the reasons they stuck with carts on the N64, and went with those pathetic mini DVD based discs on the GCN was to make it harder for pirates.
* 2GB SanDisk Porn SD fapping card provides enough storage space for at least 75 downloadable videos
* Works seamlessly in any computer, allowing users to fap hundreds of times and then post obscene photography while watching a pay-per-view channel
* Conveniently stores porn
Coming to a shady store near you.
this is for the parents or dumb ones that dont know anything, no offence, its just another way to get money, even little kids to, point and say need without knowing any SD would work just because it says Rock Band, just like Nintendo has SD cards with sandisk written on them in the Wii aisle
The bigger problem is that they haven't even opened the Wii store for music downloads, which Harmonix was supposed to have done in December.
