As always, Sony will make this thing impossible to justify purchasing.
You do realise that the S639 16GB costs far less than the equivalent iPod Nano? I got mine for £86, where as the iPod Nano costs £145.
As long as it costs less than a comparable touch and can work with a Mac I'm in. I REALLY miss the audio fidelity and EQs Sony has. I dunno if it's the amplifier or what, but the iPod doesn't quite cut it when you turn up the volume/use the EQs, which is a damn shame because I really love simple and seamless it is.
I agree prateeko. I use an iPod Nano 4th gen (with Windows), rip all my CDs to lossless, but there is lacking a fundamental audio quality. I like Apple's interface and don't even mind iTunes (save for certain things you can't customize), but I don't understand why they can't focus on the audio quality. My little 2 year old 1 gig Cowon bests it easily.
Have they improved the software for Sony pmps yet? or are they still crippled by Sony Connect :@
bk7, SonicStage is no worse than iTunes.
But in case you didn't know, Sony DAPs outside Japan has been UMS/MTP (drag and drop) for at least two generations.
I'm guessing around £300-350, the Creative Zen X-Fi 32GB can be gotten for around £199. The touch screen, OLED as well as proper web connectivity is going to rocket that price up.
Wonder if it supports widgets of some sort?
i'm hoping nearer £150, these components should be fairly cheap now, to add a wifi chip is peanuts, oled screens have been used since before the vision:M, the touchscreen aspect obviosuly places this above the S639 et al and it's the flagship player, but sony have been doing some good prices on high end mp3 for a while as mentioned

Anyway, not feeling that fauxgranitewhatever finish - but knowing Sony, there will be at least a few color variations. Otherwise, sounds good. The screen should have been a bit bigger though...
Actually looks decent, just hope it has Bluetooth. But it is pretty sad that company as large as Sony takes 2 years to catch up with Apple :(

The iTouch doesn't have bluetooth, unless I missed something.
I personally love my Samsung P2. Bluetooth, great sound (though Sony takes the cake on that one), cheaper than the touch, bluetooth, and the ability to sync it with my phone! I can keep my phone in my bag and not dig everywhere for it, my P2 beeps, music stops, and I have a mic on the device itself, great for when I'm walking around the city or between classes and I don't want to shuffle everywhere, and when I'm driving.
I'm seriously considering this, if the price doesn't kill me, and if they get rid of the granite design there. It's Sony though, they'll offer a different color I'm sure. 4GB is the only thing holding me back from keeping my P2.

Looks pretty slick. I like the A...Z slider and the dedicated volume/play/track buttons. I'm sure it will be prohibitively expensive, though.

i recently bought the Cowon s9 Curve. i'm really liking it so far. i knew that Sony was coming out with a new mp3 player at CES. i think i made the right choice by not waiting.
Have to agree and glad I didn't wait base on those pictures/brief details.
- Props to the hardware buttons, but prefer my volume controls to be around the buttons for easier in pocket use
- Don't like the case
- Bigger screen on the S9
- If that's a slider thing at the top where you press on a part of it to take you to the relevant list section then it's a bit on the small side
- Personal usage thing - the headphone jack is in the wrong place, my left pocket is my dedicated DAP pocket and so having it on the right would be a pain for my wire and i'm not going to switch pockets.
On the other hand, the Home button will be a bit easier to use than the on screen M button/holding down the play/pause hardware button on the S9 and there's also in menu album art which the S9 doesn't have.

i agree with most of what you posted. the headphone jack position doesn't matter that much to me though. i didn't read if this Sony Walkman had an accelerometer so that it switches to landscape mode or portrait mode automatically.

Be good to see the spec of that OLED, I've never had a good look at these screens up close, be interesting. One thing that hits me straight away is how sony seem to love writing all over the case, Vol, Reset, and so on, get rid of all that crap and the walkman blob make it rich black and your in business.
This is everything the yp-p3 should've been.
The marble finish is interesting, but a nice matte black would be appreciated. Sony does that quite well. Also, props on the headphone-independent noise cancellation...I've been waiting for that forever.

nice looking media player, the buttons on the top are a nice feature the ipod touch lacks, some in pocket control is always handy. mac compatibility would be nice if unlikely feature. not all mac users want ipods and sony could maybe offer us a rival
Pretty much all recent Sony Walkmans support Drag&Drop, so they should work with a Mac just fine...

i consider myself a sony fanboi.,but when u take into consideration the 6 remote control docks i would have to replace. office,living room surround sound,bedroom surround sound,wifes office,n most importantly pioneer 7' inch touchscreen steering wheel car integration that allows to play videos from iphone on car screens..,i couldnt leave ipod/iphone 30 pin integration format. in the last 2 years ive put so much money into improving sound/audio systems, sony has very few n very expensive remote control docks...i own 4 iphones 2 nanos n got 1 free touch.,in the last 2-3 years sony has lost me when it comes to mp3's...this from a sony fanboi.,i still buy all sony vaoi laptops.own 2 bravia,sony surround sounds,sony digicams,ps3 n psp.,so somehow sony still getting my business.i can say that if ipods didnt exist i would definitely buy this.
Don't shoot the messenger, but I've heard from one of my colleagues at the Sony Centre where I work, that Sony is releasing a 30th anniversary Walkman that will ultimately decide the fate of the Walkman brand...
Sony currently owns 4% of the PMP market share, making them second to Apple. If the 30th anniversary walkman can't win Sony back the number 1 spot, then they're pulling out of the PMP market all together.
I'm guessing that this may be Sony's 'make-or-break' offering...
No offense, but that's BS - nobody in their right mind would expect a single PMP model to suddenly increase the market share from 4% to 70+%...simply not gonna happen.

Still haven't forgiven Sony for rootkitting my ass. Then claiming what I don't know won't hurt me. Then you look at all the proprietary file-types and software Sony pushes on you, and all I can say is fuck you Sony. Fuck you with a jagged muddy stick.
You do realise that no Sony Walkman sold in the west has used anything but drag and drop for over a year now don't you? The only file formats they use are mp3, acc, lpcm, wma/v (including protected content) and h.264. No DRM is supported apart from Plays for Sure (which you can ignore if you so desire). Admittedly the usage of a proprietry dock connector is something which should be sorted out. This one even supports DRM-free downloads from the Amazon store over wi-fi so maybe it might be OK to "forgive" Sony now, because they make the best sounding portable players by some margin and it would be a shame to miss out on that lovely warm sound.

I love how it emphasizes on its touchscreen but still gives you real buttons for the most essential functions. Perfect. Fingerprint-proof casing, and it looks solid. Sold!
This thing is Hot. I almost bought the Cowon S9 a couple of weeks ago but heard that Sony was coming out with something like this. Don't get me wrong I think the S9 is sexy as all but at just 16GB it just isn't enough space for me. Now it's a matter of audio quality and how I get files onto the device. If this thing is comparable to the S9 I may have found my new toy.. Goodbye Zune!
It is drag and drop ready and is compatible with the majority of syncing software as well, including WMP, iTunes, Rhapsody, Winamp etc. Sound quality wise if it is anything like the previous generations it will at least be the equal of the Cowon, check out reviews on cNet or user reviews from any forum e.g. Head-fi or Anything but iPod, sound quality is the most revered thing about any Walkman.
Sony make the best sounding portables by far!!!!! but i dont see a input jack aka minidiscs.....shit i still use mine for recording all sorts of crap...

Close to perfect. The only thing missing is flac/ogg support.
I can see that opinion is divided on this one, but I'm a bit gutted. I've been excitedly awaiting confirmation of a new Sony player with 32Gb of memory, and spec wise this hits the spot ... but I just think it's damn FUGLY !!!

what is also really nice, is that it packs wi-fi with a internet browser (who knows if it's better or as good as safari)

sound quality is really a big deal to me
but i couln't resist the apps and games and many other features of the ipod touch
plus i got a great deal, $220 for a 2g 16gb iPod touch at sears, brand new
and this sony x1000, is basically a ipod touch w/ killer sq, bundled in-ear headphones, and noise cancellation (and the OLED screen)
I REALLY hope that sony releases this at either the ipod touch's current price ($299:16gb, and $399:32gb) or even lower would be

There's no way I'd ever buy a Sony Walkman again. The one I currently have is a piece of cheap-arse shit that wasn't worth what I paid for it. Within days the cover had blistered, the headphones lasted a week, and the supplier (reputable locals) explained that the warranty didn't cover either. I don't care how good they are, Sony haven't lived up to their reputation once, I won't be holding my breath that they'll do it again.
Sure, itunes sucks, and the sound quality ain't the best. I'd still prefer an ipod.
I bet sony will price this high at first then drop the price 3 months later like they do with all their products. I don't understand that method of marketing but sony is pretty consistant. I just bought a bravia lcd tv for half the cost of what it cost when the xbr 6 series came out 4 or so months ago.

It most certainly is about price and those that say it is not must have much more disposal income than most people in these times. People are not spending huge amounts on gadgets and are more selective. Just look at Sony Playstation 3. Over priced and you can find tons of them everywhere. The Wii is better priced and they get gone soon as the stores get them in. If Sony overprices these Apple will still be the MP3 king. Sony is going to have to keep these in the same price range $250 or under which is doubtful. It's all about the economy stupid.

I don't understand these players any more. Why buy one? My phone is a Samsung Instinc. It's my touch screen phone, answering machine, calender to log events on with alarm to remind you, 2 mega pixtel camera, internet, e-mail, tv, radio and mp3 player. Comes with a head set that stops the music when you get a call and becomes the phone headset. What more could you want?

I'm so pissed at Ipod, if Sony even mentions that this thing can possibly outlast the pathetic 3 yr disposable ipod, it would be worth twice as much from the get go, im so sick of restealing music.
