We've been somewhat charmed by the
Vivienne Tam-styled HP Mini 1000 for some time now, but today on the floor at CES we got our first in-person look at the teeny fashion "clutch," as it were, and have to say that in person it's pretty good looking. The 10-incher's got a fiery design plus a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom with 1GB of RAM, and an up to 60GB hard drive. We were particularly enamored with that silver mesh hinge. It's defintely a fashionable item -- and if that's what you're into it's got a starting price of $699. Check a gallery of this gal (and it's matching mouse!) after the break.

Yes, hideous. Looks like it was spray painted red...

Complete with Braun foil razor, I see.
How one gets it close enough to be effective is puzzling.
:)

Why again it costs that much ?

Wasn't the Red line of computers supposed to fight AIDS or something?

Images 10, 12, 20, 21, 25.
In all these images you can see the silver mesh hinge not properly aligned to the body of the laptop. To the left the hinge appears to sit more flush whereas on the right right side the hinge is more raised.
anyone else notice this?
mick @ Jan 8th 2009 4:41PM
thank god its a prototype eh?
Nate @ Jan 8th 2009 5:19PM
All the Mini 1000s look like that- I'm glad to see they haven't fixed it on the upper end version. :)
I noticed it on mine, and then stumbled across a forum where many people were lamenting the same thing.
So it's not just a prototype issue either...
It's definitely one of those things that once you notice it, it bugs the hell out of you. But functionally, it doesn't appear to have any impact. The folding doesn't seem off or anything.

a computer is not a fashion statement

haha! I know some people who buy Apple computers, strictly based on what they look like and who will see them using them.

I'm waiting for the River Tam version.
It operates very strangely until one day it displays a Japanese-esque commercial, says "Miranda" and opens a can of whoop-ass in a bar.
collide007 @ Jan 8th 2009 10:28PM
lol, that's the best scene in the movie.

Actually wifey would love this. I played with the regular one at Costco and besides the funky trackpad/mouse button layout, it seemed pretty slick. I'll probably pull the trigger if they update the processor and operating system.

I killed a man with my Mini 1000 and now it looks identical.

It's so great it even gives you the closest shave your ever had, and cleaning couldn't be easier.

This is what happens when you put nail polish on a netbook.

Shouldn't that silver mesh grille be gold instead, seeing as how the entire laptop has a red and gold theme going with the gold battery and lettering and all? Seems kind of bizarre that it goes to silver for the grille.
Somehow this looks worse than the early photos but I'm guessing the lighting wasn't too good.

Say what you want but stores can't keep the regular Minis in stock. Best Buys in South Florida have been out of them for weeks.
