You knew the comparisons were inevitable, but have you braced yourself for how incredibly similar these two laptops are?
MSI's new X-Slim 320 13.3-inch ultraportable is a teensy bit wider and a teensy bit thicker than the MacBook Air, but most of the dimensions, layouts and curves are uncannily alike. As for build quality, MSI obviously suffers a bit for its netbook heritage. The plastics aren't stellar, and the keyboard, while delightfully full size, is a tad squishy, but there's still no denying that this is a pretty wild deal for this very particular form factor -- plus that built-in 3G, VGA and Ethernet are just rubbing it in Apple's face.
The MSI does look a lot like the new MacBooks with the black border, but it is made of plastic... Though If you assure me that I can put Leopard easily in that computer, then we have a winner...
Wake up, people – this thing runs on a 1.6GHz Atom. Hardly a worthy competitor. No thanks.
$800 vs $1800? I would expect not.
@Jay Evans:
Except you get what you pay for. Atom processors are slow as hell compared to Core2Duos. Air's also have nVidia's 9400's which are pretty good even for light gaming. Plus the air has DDR 3 RAM, 1066 MHz FSB, you get an SSD option and the thing isn't made of cheap plastic.
The MSI has 3 USB ports though. I'll give it that.
dont worry, it will be cheap!
"$800 vs $1800? I would expect not." – well exactly. Yet Engadget seem desperate to compare them? :-/
Hmm this looks pretty cool, I just wanna know the price which shouldn't be much considering the Atom processor. I agree that it could've also been thinner but VGA is handy for students like me who use it for classroom presentations.

"Apple's days are numbered as more and more manufacturers jump on the style bandwagon."
Do you mean like all the iPhone copycats / wannabes??
Let's get something straight: Apple leads, all others follow.
As it was with the iPhone, so it is with this wannabe rip-off of the Mac Air. Form *does not* follow function since this copycat can only run Windoze or Linux, whereas the Macbook can run 3 seperate yet simultaneous OS's.
If you want to really have an 'Apples to apples' comparison (pun intended) then call me when the MSI machine can also run 3 OS's simultaneously; otherwise StFU.
*cough*LG Prada*cough*
Oh and the MSI machine doesn't have to run 3 operating systems because it runs the one that all the best applications are designed for.
Ok, I'm sorry but I have to ask, what the hell you are talking about. You are blaming other PCs because they can't run OSX? Here is a news flash, it's all fucking x86 architecture and within a week of release that MSI will be running OSX so quit complaining.
Also, WTF are you talking about "simultaneous OS's"? You mac fanboys get so caught up in your dumb apple marketing you forget that it's just simple virtualisation. WE CAN ALL VIRTUALISE AN OS, IT IS NOTHING NEW! So I guess I am "calling you".
I'm sorry for the rant but I can't stand idiots bashing things they don't know anything about.
So, you can run Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux _simultaneously_ on your Mac Air? I don't think so.
Incompetence with the English language aside, it runs a lot more than 3 OSes; we could start with Windows NT (which includes 2k, XP, Vista, and 7), Linux, NetBSD, FreeBSD, and (perhaps with missing driver issues) OpenBSD. There's also MS-DOS/Windows (including Windows 98SE and ME), ReactOS, DR-DOS, BeOS, and more.
Oh, and while it's probably a violation of some draconian license agreement, I'll bet Mac OS X works just fine, too.
Why does the one sitting on top look exactly like the new aluminum macbooks just the exterior material is made out of cheap, white plastic instead.....?
MSI Wind is good because it is a apple-ish small netbook which apple does not offer. In fact im typing this comment on my Wind with OS X right now. Because of its small size people would not confuse the wind with a mac. But this X-Slim looks awfully like a cheap rip-off from white macbook / Al macbook / air. I would not want people see me use one of that :-
PC = Personal Computer.
-I thought that roughly 30% of Engadget might not know that- XP
Are you stupid or what?
i like it, ive got a wind with OSX too, I will have one of these too if i can get osx on it, its cute. and 13.3in screen is more usable.
How about comparing the price?
I was wondering whether to get this or a dell mini 12...this does seem to offer more value, at least in terms of screen size and low weight, but the pictures may have changed my mind a bit. putting it next to the MBA really brings out the cheapness of the plastic exterior. i have no problem with the specs, and am pretty much OK with the price, but there's no way I'm buying a white one...wayy too ugly. I might get the black one if MSI doesn't fuck up and make the exterior glossy and extra-cheap looking.
"B12"
BINGO!!
Ah, the everlasting Gobstopper, I mean bantering between Apples and Windows. They both can run OS X, Windows, and Linux. Although it's harder to get OS X working on a Thinkpad and it is to get Windows working on a Macbook. But Linux runs on both just fine. I have a Macbook Air and a Dell Inspiron 1520, and I have to say the Air is the better computer. OS X is faster than Vista, and no I don't want to hear the crap about the games... I hear that plenty, and besides I don't think games count as actual productive software titles, so get over it with the games thing.
" MSI obviously suffers a bit for its netbook heritage"
lol, engadget and it's fanboyism for apple and being ignorant of other products. By that statement, the editor is thinking that MSI started making notebooks only now, starting with the MSI Wind? lulz.
At half the price and half the speed as the Air, I don't see much point in a "fight". It's a different product class.
Nothing against MSI, this looks like a nice little machine except for that VGA port.
Half the speed but enough for everything you normaly need. not bad really...
