Because I listened to Palm's financial call on the 15th of December (archived audio stream on their website...available to all) and got a good feeling from what they said about the new OS and device. Speculative, but a good guess, it turns out.
Good! They earned it! It looks like a breath of fresh air offering the same slick UI as the iphone but all the actual functionality it lacks such as copy and paste, MMS, uncrippled bluetooth, applications that run in the background etc...
I really can't blame you for not doing it. In fact, I might have questioned your sanity. Did anyone expext Palm to actually produce something decent again?
Well, it was a risk I should have taken. The stock prices of both were very low so I could have gotten a decent amount for not a ton of cash. Also, there have been rumors of both the new Palm device and new Sprint devices for months now. Honestly I had guessed a new WM/Tegra phone on Sprint but I knew they were ready for a turnaround either way.
I think most people were thinking it was going to be flop... When a company doesn't come out with anything revolutionary for years the company is either going to come out with something worth buying or fade away in the distance...
With today's economic atmosphere I guess everyone was thinking Palm was going to be one of the companies to fade away into the distance or just be silent in the background... Guess this changed everyone's perceptions and Palm owes one to their R&D....
If you didn't see this coming, you should get out of stocks. This is the closest thing to stock-marked certain it gets.
Stocks so cheap high volume trades are possible, combined with positive (duh) conference, as any conference in a company trying to save itself will be, stock responding to conference, circular volume enhancement of the supply and demand, and there you go.
Simply speaking, conference is predicted to be good, stock's cheap, people want to buy the stocks, forcing the price up.
Take a look at the other tech companies stock, comparing it with positive news. Keep watching, and you'll see the pattern of "free money" if you invest. I'm currently paying my way through medical studies, which isn't exactly cheap, without loans, prior experience with stocks, or any hard work.
With this market it will drop again before the release... there are lots of stocks that have increased or doubled in the last few months because they are well below market value due to scared investors and people having to sell to meet margin calls.....
Anyone else notice that the Palm, since December 25th, no longer has any handhelds like the Palm TX?? What gives? Even their 800 customer service number had no idea that the new website design sent all the handhelds to a graveyard - without so much as a decent goodbye to our favorites!
I was actually very sad that I couldn't by any stock (no money) when I read that Nova will be presented at CES because I was sure it would be a very positive reaction...

Told a friend to buy at $2.20. He's buying me dinner tonight. ;-)
Tonicboy @ Jan 8th 2009 5:22PM
Dinner? I'd imagine he could buy you a dozen dinners and still come out way on top. Or maybe a gift of a Pre would be more apropos.
Rob @ Jan 8th 2009 5:29PM

You may want to hold off on the celebration (or regret) until Palm actually *delivers* this product, no?
That said, it's nice to see Palm back in the saddle. Maybe.
Verythrax @ Jan 8th 2009 4:54PM
Yeah, I really saw that coming...
Ace @ Jan 8th 2009 4:56PM
Talk about market inefficiency...I thought people knew palm was launching the new device for weeks?
Poom @ Jan 8th 2009 5:08PM
I think nobody could guess that a new product would launch with new OS that is now on-par with the competitors.

I actually bought this due to the engadget post about Nova being unveiled at CES, got it at 2.15. I feel happy my speculation was right

Not only was it obvious to buy palm stock because of the buzz and its inexpensiveness, but the team behind came from apple.
Is a sports team good because of the jersey or because of the people who wear it?
