RCA dishes new 16GB SL5016 Lyra Slider MP3 player, we yawn

Simple to Use, Offer Fast and Easy Access to Most Frequently-Used Functions
Products Simplify Loading and Managing AV Content and
Are More Intuitive Than Competitive Media Players
Las Vegas NV – January 7, 2009 - International CES, Booth 11006-10506 - Audiovox
Corporation (NASDAQ: VOXX). With thousands of MP3 players in the market today, RCA has
broken through the clutter of difficult-to-load and hard-to-operate competitive products with a
line of digital media players that are the easiest to use players on the market thanks to RCA's
exclusive easyRip™ Media Software.
easyRip Media Software is automatically activated when RCA MP3 players are
connected to a PC, without needing a separate, extra CD-ROM installer like
competitive products require. EasyRip allows for quick and simple loading and
management of AV content and provides fast and easy access to frequently used
functions. It is more intuitive than other jukeboxes and media players and, with
interactive desktop tools, provides the user with a refreshingly easy experience.
Immediately after activating the MP3 player on a computer, widget icons (also
called "widgets") appear on a PC and interactive desktop tools give quick and
easy access to the most used activities. The easyRip software helps users
organize a PC music library's music, videos, photos and playlists. The user can
view and sort by artist, album and genre.
A user-friendly search bar provides quick and efficient access to files while
serving up all the necessary information to edit, manage, and view those files.
There are several ways to capture and upload music and video to RCA digital
media players. First, the easyRip CD Ripper feature lets users easily download
music directly to a PC library or the RCA digital media device. Next, the video
recorder can capture Web video for playback on RCA video-capable devices.
Additionally, the audio recorder captures any audio playing on a PC including
streaming audio from the Web. Finally, the Media Playlists feature helps create
personalized sets of songs or playlists, which can be quickly assembled, managed
and edited. "EasyRip Media Software is the answer for getting the most
complete, quality playback performance from RCA MP3 players," said Tom
Malone, president, Audiovox Electronics Corporation.

Looks cool, at least.
But it's overpriced.
Dude, it's RCA! Premiere leader in phonograph technology!!
nice phone. :)
This is insulting. No one makes mp3 players to the standard that apple do.
shit man...
Douchebag.
This is close... it has a built in battery, which is sure to annoy.
And thank gawd for that.
I like the physical volume control, wish my Zune had one.
About as unexciting as a 17" Macbook and just as overpriced. Next.
16GB w/ colour screen. The price is fair.
I really don't get how this is overpriced? Is it really that bad, or is this just Engadget journalistic tomfoolery again?
You read random bashing with utterly subjective and foolish "facts", look at the author's name and there you have it, certain as death, Mr. Darren "Dense" Murph.
This has twice the capacity of my ipod Touch, and it costs twice as less. It may not have the features that the Touch has, but I'm betting that you can use this one as a USB drive in a pinch, and you don't have to deal with that crappy iTunes every time you' like to add a song or charge the player.
If you need an mp3 and FM player, but you don't want to give mApple your credit card number, this sounds like a good price.
you mean half?! lol
OK.. looks a lot like my Sony Ericsson w580i slider and the SE w760a slider I replaced it with. For $30. wait... the 8gb M2 was $20... so a total of $50.
SO.. a 3G phone (with free opera mini to make it useful), 8 gb storage, integrated walkman, cool mini XMB style menu, motion control games, bluetooth, 3mp camera, the list goes on.
Who's runnin out to buy this for $120? RCA is way out of touch with current trends.
My family uses the w580i's as stand alone mp3 players/ pmps. We have two, one free from AT&T contract, one $50 from insurance replacement (first one got lost, replaced, found... ) The battery lasts forever in airplane mode, since the radio is off, but they can also still be used as edge phones too, but wifey has a v3xx or some 3G razr she likes, and child has a tiny samsung she likes too.
And you only pay how much a month?
Four phones on AT&T family talk plan,
no text messaging - BLOCKED. (the biggest scam in history of telecommunications...someone should go to jail over that price structure) - if you got something to tell me, call me. I have voicemail.
One line with unlimited media net access for $15 a month- mine- which I use alot.(I just swap sims to download anything to the other handsets if needed)
The rest all have internet access blocked also, so no "bought by accident" or downloads at $/kb.
We never go over minutes, in fact we seem to have rollover minutes all the time. The free mobile to mobile helps, and we have no landlines. So our phone bill is about $110 monthly, which I don't think is too bad - remember, 4 lines.
Considering a single iPhone is at least $60 monthly, and would prob be around $100 in reality, I'm content with our current plan.
I like AT&T, they have excellent coverage in my area, including 3G. I've been with them for years... since before it was Cingular even. So 2 year contracts (18 months in reality) to get subsidized handsets doesn't bother me.
Hardly an apples-to-apples comparison.
@Juan..
Nothing with gadgets ever is a true apples to apples comparison, too many variables. Especially when its a 'Apple' to apples comparison...
But a quick Ebay search found the w580i unlocked, new & used for under $100... (no subsidy), point being: more tech crammed into same form factor for less $.
The point of my original post was just that it seems like a lot of money for not a lot of gadget, better values exist. I tried to provide accurate details of my situation as an example.
$120 for a sliding mp3 player is more laugh inducing than yawn inspiring...
SE W910i + iPod
16gb, looks slick, and cheaper than an equivalent iPod? And you have to ask why people would pay $120 for it? Really?
I agree. Why is there so much hate in this post? A company makes a simple mp3 player that's cheap and doesn't look like poo and it gets ripped. Pretty unfair.
i own an older RCA dap, and i can tell you, while it doesn't look like poo, it sure functions about that much, RCA doesn't know how to make anything digital
wow..if we have to compare product form different categories like this...you will get....
price of myphone (over 2yrs) = price of a psp + a DS + a netbook + a subsidised phone...:)
well..approximately..depends where you are..
OH … that thingi looks rather like a mobile phone than a MP3-Player. Has this been announced this time ?
