Microsoft temporarily removes Windows 7 Beta download limit
Good news, Windows 7 fanatics -- Microsoft has decided to nix that 2.5 million download limit in order to a) calm everyone down and b) enable its servers to relax just a wee bit. After the Windows 7 Beta download was launched, it took just hours to bring the servers to a screeching halt as consumers 'round the globe attempted to get in before the 2.5 million mark was hit. Now, however, the team has removed that barrier for the next fortnight (through January 24th, being that it was decided on Saturday) in effort to make the download experience more ideal. Crisis averted. Just in case you've forgotten how good it looks, we're including a gallery, and don't remember how much fun we've all had running it on the MacBook Pro and the VAIO P.

Does this mean I have to wipe my Vista before I load W7? Or can it be set up as a dual boot? Once I'm happy with, assuming I am, can I then just dump Vista without having to backup all the other files? Or will I have to reload all my other programs so they are recognized by W7? And how the heck can I tell if my PC is 32 or 64 bit?
1: a sharp and often satirical or ironic utterance designed to cut or give pain2 a: a mode of satirical wit depending for its effect on bitter, caustic, and often ironic language that is usually directed against an individual b: the use or language of sarcasm
Sounds like that is what he wanted to get across
Word 2007 sucks. Hope your small business has a lot of training money to spend on useless changes. Software takes hours to decifer the changes, even when using the help link.
Good luck, I went back to 2003 version.
And why is this "good News for Vista owners"? Now we get to not pay to be Beta testers for yet another bloated Microsoft OS. Then we will have to pay to get the super bloated OS after we have found all the bugs. Give me a break.
Write and OS better than W7 and then you can talk.
Well it all sounds interesting but I will wait for them to get all the bugs out of it before I put anything new from Microsoft on my computer. XP works fine for me.
Please forgive my ignorance. I am not familiar with BETA and do not know what the asset is to having it on my computer. I do not play games or watch alot of video on my computer.
Could someone please tell me what the difference....in laymens terms...and the benefits of having BETA?
Beta just means it is in a "Testing Phase" and is not in it final version to be sold to the public.
Uhm...what the hell is all this about? If any of you people read this comment can clue me in, please send me an email explaining to me. I'm Kerriwyn@aol.com
Serioulsy, do I NEED to get this, whatever it is? I have Vista on my lappie here and haven't had any problems with it uh...is there a reason I should download whatever this is? Please, come help the challenged blonde! Thanks
Think this is microsofts way of getting a lot of people to "Test" their crap so they can find the bugs for them. That way Microsoft doesn't have to pay anyone to do the dirty work. I will wait until it has been out at least 2 years before I even consider trying it. I am wondering if most programs and games etc. one may have installed on there computer will work with this version? Unless it is just Vista or XP in a new wrapper with a bunch of useless garbage added to make it appear like a new version. I would be concerned that any antivirus soft ware etc. would work or not also.
After looking at the photos accompanying this writeup, I canceled my download.
It took me 13 hours to download the ISO file on my broadband high speed wireless. My speed isn't that great.
Then the audio drivers would not work and the ethernet driver would not work. Finally found an ethernet card that it could furnish the drivers to and downloaded a Windows 7 update for my audio in my ASUS MB. Still have one hardware item that I can't find drivers for, but it seems to work so I have given up trying to find the drivers for it.
I'm not too impressed with the Start Menu and Programs Menu. Some of the other features are pretty nice, but I will probably go back to using my Windows XP Pro most of the time. I learned a lot but it uses memory something terrible. My other computers don't have that much memory in them.
If anyone can solve the sprint EVDO issue let me know.. So far its been the only non functioning item. running the 32 bit build.
My hard drive is bigger than yours
I am still waiting in line I think. Could this be true? I'm on Microsoft Windows 7 and I've selected my language and 32-bit and entered my user and password. The green dots just spin in the middle of the screen. It's be like this since Saturday night. Any ideas?
Although in beta, this is the best version of Windows to date.
Hell, this is the best OS to date, period.
Forget XP, Vista, 2K, OSX, *nix, etc.
Windows 7 is the best OS out there bar none.
I've got a list of issues with Windows 7 after serious testing although I think it is a clear step above Vista.
I like Windows 7 but I have some concerns that I'd like addressed before final release
First thing - EVERYONE I spoke to even at the MS booth at CES said they want the UP FOLDER back in explorer - yes there are other ways to go back one folder but the up folder was convenient.
Classic start menu - not an option - classic start menu makes it easier to support clients if they have key components such as network properties and my computer on the desktop. I'm not saying it should be the default but why not make it an option as it was in Windows XP and Vista? I realize you can put some icons on the desktop (not IE) using personalize.
Media Center won't let you click on album art cover once a song is already playing to play the new song from the album art cover. Seems only logical.
Media Center - often has static in playback - using Audigy 2z sound card.
Search works well but it would be great if the search in the start menu had a drop down just like run has in the start menu so you can repeat a search from your search history.
Aero interface stops working without message so flip 3d stops with alt-tab - using the troubleshooting fix sometimes solves it by enabling desktop manager - sometimes it can't - how do you manually enable Windows desktop manager - personalize desktop works but nothing to control the aero interface
Since most current receivers and other media streaming capable devices will support .flac file playback, it seems a shame not to use the native media player in windows as a media streaming server - instead because windows does not natively support flac playback, we have to look at alternative hardware streaming solutions or mediaplayers similar to windows media player but with flac support such as tversity or Twonky or Nero
Winver does not tell you if you are running 64 or 32 bit - computer properties would be improved if 64 or 32 bit was listed in the top section. It never states if you are installing the 32 or 64 bit version during installation.
It would be nice if it was easy to see what version and build of windows you were running by going to computer properties or by running winver - currently it tells you Windows Version 6.1 - Build 70000 - it doesn't say 7000 x64 081212-1400
During Install if you attempt to install with a brand new drive it won't install until you format the drive and reboot.
There is no desktop icon for IE - this was very handy for clear items and change settings etc before going into IE.
Do something with the 200 MB partion in disk manager so it is clear that it is a restore point or whatever - change the color of it, just make it more clearly defined.
