iPhone nano now rumored for June, Unicorn delayed again until September
Ready for more iPhone nano rumors? Good, because apparently the Chinese trade paper Economic Daily News is now reporting that Taiwan Semiconductor Company (TSMC) will be handling chip manufacturing for a low-cost device being referred to as... you guessed it: the iPhone nano. While the paper has a fairly good reputation, it is filtered through the lens of DigiTimes on our end, so as usual, take it with the required grain of salt. Still, the source is calling a June launch of the handset on the heels of an order for the components in March. The time frame is reasonable enough, and if history is any lesson here, Apple loves to intro iPhones in the Summer. Given that China has yet to see a deal for the iPhone proper, and a lower-cost entry may be perfectly tuned for vast Asian markets, the nano could gather in a whole new fold of users (and the smaller screen would be less of an issue given the need for character recognition). That theory falls in line with statements from analysts, though as always, putting too much stock in any of this speculation could be hazardous to your health. Just ask Steve Jobs.

Now I know what Steve meant by Apple products being announced prematurely.
Tinu @ Jan 13th 2009 2:02PM
How will apple copy the OS from iPhone to iPhone Nano when they don't even have "copy and paste"?
BIG GIANT BALLS 2! @ Jan 13th 2009 2:10PM
You sir, and the iPhone nano are totally gay.

took me a second to realize that unicorn wasn't the name of a new product.

How is this joke not as stale as Wii jokes?
Mile @ Jan 13th 2009 1:02PM
Something needs to be trimmed to make it a nano..
"I can't just call anyone I want to: My iPhone nano doesn't have a 7!"
"How long have you had it?"
"Don't know - my iCalendar doesn't have any 3's."
Like_A_Glove @ Jan 13th 2009 1:08PM
Not necessarily, how about Compressed versus Trimmed?
It's easier on the developer's side. they don't have to worry about platform variations and compatibilities.
Verythrax @ Jan 13th 2009 1:18PM
The first feature to be cut will be copy and past of course... wait!
Precurse @ Jan 13th 2009 2:43PM
"Sorry sir, copy+paste can be purchased on the App store for a mere $4.99"
E @ Jan 13th 2009 4:11PM
I believe the 3 and the 7 can be purchased for $8 and $10 respectively, but you can only use them on one phone.

It saddens me that no one seems to have gotten the Steven Wright reference here.

I won't be surprised. The only bad thing I can see coming out of this is if apple at&t put the price up of the main iPhone.
Kris120890 @ Jan 13th 2009 1:06PM
When I said Apple + AT&T I mean Apple and the network providers like O2 and whoever else have exclusivity over the iPhone unless they're opened to other Networks.
shugg @ Jan 13th 2009 2:08PM
is o2 prepaid .?,where that at australia, new zealand .,uk.,??here in usa only people that use prepaid are people with horrible credit, bums, unemployed, convicted felons, minimum wage earners, etc.,

How about another one. The iPhone is shrinking like Steve Jobs is...
idiot @ Jan 13th 2009 1:05PM
what a gay unicorn
Razor @ Jan 13th 2009 1:10PM
All but two were gay. Why do think there are no more unicorns?
Ryan Trevisol @ Jan 13th 2009 1:11PM
"That unicorn is gay"
This is actually a recognized scientific fact, like
"Gravity's pull equals 9.8 m/s^2"
Kiteless @ Jan 13th 2009 1:44PM
I like Unicorns!
June would be a good time for Apple to release a new wireless device. The Palm Pre is supposed to be out sometime between now and then. I'm really excited to see what comes next from Apple, if anything, and now the Pre shakes up the wireless space.

Of course... his uni-horn is curved!
crawdad689 @ Jan 13th 2009 1:06PM
I bet this is true. I also bet we don't see a wi-max/LTE/copy-and-paste iPhone until 2010.
iPhone nano will be smaller, and won't require a data plan. Maybe it'll even be $free.99 with 2 year contract. yay.
Phoenix @ Jan 13th 2009 1:52PM
With no other company would copy and paste be listed with those other features on a most wanted list...
xValentine @ Jan 13th 2009 1:07PM
I've been waiting for that unicorn since last year!
DAMMIT!
Félix @ Jan 13th 2009 3:51PM
Word is she will come with an integrated LTE chip.
Still no date for the LTE network availability.
jack1701 @ Jan 13th 2009 7:04PM
Don't worry, by August someone will leak pictures of accessories such as saddles, leash and horn warmer spread around the internet generating arguments about the Unicorn size, gender and degree of curve on the horn. Then a beta tester will post Unicorn unboxing video, teardown video and comprehensive review.
A week after release Engadget will have hands-on review, polls and 'how would you change the Unicorn' post. Then some gifted hacker will post a guide how to hack the horn to play music and change color. In October rumors spread about UniColt which is a smaller version of Unicorn.
gimmeslack12 @ Jan 13th 2009 1:13PM
Hey I just got an update from my future self. Apparently the iPhone Nano will come out in October 09 and it sucks. Can we move on to something worth talking about now?
Dax @ Jan 13th 2009 1:13PM
No way in HELL Apple releases a product in China first. Rediculous.
bobblehead @ Jan 13th 2009 1:22PM
No way they would build it in America either.

"REDiculous"
OHMGYOURSOFUNNY! COMMUNISM!!!
bob cobb @ Jan 13th 2009 1:14PM
hey apple, how about you fix the problems with the iPhone first. No copy paste STILL? pathetic.
boarderx @ Jan 13th 2009 2:00PM
Why does a gaming counsel need copy/paste?
jouten @ Jan 13th 2009 2:13PM
The same reason you need spell check?
Nomi @ Jan 13th 2009 1:14PM
Either way...we can expect something in June.
csmitty @ Jan 13th 2009 4:15PM
I'm expecting something tomorrow. so what. And i'll give you a hint, its not a toaster.
Verythrax @ Jan 13th 2009 1:16PM
Are you sure that by iPhone Nano the doesn't mean a meizu knock-off or such?
Dave @ Jan 13th 2009 1:22PM
Man, you nailed that headline.
Seriously, an iPhone nano is not going to happen anytime soon. Apple sells millions of full-sized iPhones and no one seems to complain. And it sells them for $200 out of the store, which would mean an imaginary nano must cost half that, and that would just destroy Apple's business plan(on top of being just a plainly dumb move). I'm sure Apples gunning for a more significant market share, but thats not the way to gain it.
Plus, iPhone as a brand is stronger than other any product in history (including Apple's own Mac and iPod), and Apple are not going to fuck it up by splitting the product line before the platform evolves.
And even if I am wrong, there is no way in hell they're calling it a nano.
Verythrax @ Jan 13th 2009 1:27PM
Yeah, I agree, but the iPhone have some problems to get in some markets - in China it doesn't go without 3G working for example? And a full feature iPhone cost a leg in Latin America, since it's just sold with the most expensive 3G access plans. A "normal" iPhone, just for calls and apps, with ocasional edge/wap use would be great here.
A Nano would make sense if it's directed to specific markets - but it doesn't look like Apple, so it's unlikely.
MyTriniPhone @ Jan 13th 2009 2:40PM
there are allot of people that think the iPhone is too big.
they will solve the smaller screen easily with a higher res screen
my money is on the iPhone Nano rumors being true.
Phoenix @ Jan 13th 2009 2:58PM
A higher res on a smaller screen? That makes it even harder to see!
