iPhone nano rumors? Good, because apparently the Chinese trade paper
Economic Daily News is now reporting that Taiwan Semiconductor Company (TSMC) will be handling chip manufacturing for a low-cost device being referred to as... you guessed it: the iPhone nano. While the paper has a fairly good reputation, it is filtered through the lens of
DigiTimes on our end, so as usual, take it with the required grain of salt. Still, the source is calling a June launch of the handset on the heels of an order for the components in March. The time frame is reasonable enough, and if history is any lesson here, Apple loves to intro iPhones in the Summer. Given that China has yet to
see a deal for the iPhone proper, and a lower-cost entry may be perfectly tuned for vast Asian markets, the nano could gather in a whole new fold of users (and the smaller screen would be less of an issue given the need for character recognition). That theory falls in line with statements from analysts, though as always, putting too much stock in any of this speculation could be hazardous to your health. Just ask Steve Jobs.

That, and most, if not all, people use some other type of input interface than character recognition, which is the slowest option.
You're wrong there. it's faster for asian languages, given the sheer mass of characters.
I know for a fact that both the "Pinyin" and "Strokes" input methods, which can use either physical or virtual keys, are indeed much faster than writing out entire characters on a touch screen.
I thought you meant things like keyboards (virtual or not). I apologise for mistaking you for an apple fanboy defending the virtual keyboard. Looks like someone else on this blog actually has a point to make
I seriously doubt there will be a smaller iPhone.
A iPod Touch Nano sounds more realistic and would make more sense. Offer a smaller touchscreen media player that does the basic media playing but include the phonebook, calendar etc with no AppStore support so not to cut into the iPod Touch/iPhone sales. I predict the current iPod nano out now will be Apple's last before the transition to all-touch screen versions and i feel a smaller Touch would be the successor.
No. This will in no way compete with the Pre.
Plus I think the Pre will be out much sooner than June.

Omg, if there were to be an iPhone Nano, that thing would be a pain in the a**.
I really don't think the iPhone needs to get any smaller... Many people can't text on it as it is, just imagine it with that thing. That is unless, they actually decided they would put sideways texting in the sms app. But ehh, I hope they don't come out with it. I doubt many people would buy it anyway.
