Sony shows off flexible OLED Walkman concepts on video
Looks like Sony Insider caught some footage of those flexible OLED Walkmans in action during a CES promo video hidden away in the booth. Looks like a pretty sweet riff on the Cover Flow-esque interface that's due to arrive on the NWZ-X1000, but there's not much else to go on -- let's hope Sony's spending more time getting the X1000 ready to leave that impenetrable glass housing than it is mocking up videos of fantasy tech. Video after the break!

finnith @ Jan 13th 2009 10:38PM
Just cause it doesn't exist yet doesn't mean you can't wish you had one. What's so wrong about dreaming?
micklol @ Jan 13th 2009 10:54PM
I want a flying car.......oh no I am garbage...
Blastar @ Jan 14th 2009 3:20AM
Look like it's from a Final Fantasy movie or something.
I also wish I had one... looks cool.. wwoooooooow..... (Keep gazing).
Dave Chappelle @ Jan 14th 2009 4:25AM
OMG i was just eating garbage!
na lol. Sony makes this and Apple can say goodbye to market share and we can all be back to the good ol days of walkmans being KING.
Ergem @ Jan 13th 2009 9:21PM
Sony is amazing!
Jarrod @ Jan 13th 2009 9:26PM
What's the deal with Sony and conceptual presentations
Levi @ Jan 13th 2009 10:19PM
Anytime someone says "Sony = fail," I immediately think special ed.
Remember that whole 14 years straight profit thing? Yeah, they totally failed.
vvtopkar @ Jan 13th 2009 10:24PM
Geez iEye, you spawn faster than rabbits......
oh no i di-int @ Jan 14th 2009 12:34AM
I hear a M$ seinfeild commercial coming up....
(Once they prove that they can make them, I'll certainly get one for my girlfriend)
jack @ Jan 13th 2009 9:38PM
ya but they lost almost all of that on the ps3 that figure was closer 2 2 billion and they made the rest up in other tech
HZ @ Jan 13th 2009 9:38PM
And here you can see another Apple fanboy :D!!!!
When are you people gonna learn to be OBJECTIVE ?...
we're all still waiting for the new OSX tho.
Nilay Patel @ Jan 13th 2009 11:19PM
I'm a fanboy for wanting an actual product instead of a video? Okay, fine -- I'm a product fanboy. You got me.
HZ @ Jan 14th 2009 6:04AM

what an awesome invention...by Nokia's Morph wrist design. too bad sony baloney likes to copy everyone that does better than them and acts like they invented a miracle.
Canis_Minor @ Jan 13th 2009 10:36PM
Agreed. I see Nokia calling up there patent attorneys.
Then again, Nokia never capitalized on the all-touchscreen Aeon design, so they probably have no intention of every progressing with their Morph concept. Maybe it's good if Sony steals the idea and actually makes a real product.
Dave Chappelle @ Jan 14th 2009 4:30AM
just shuttup you dickhead. Nokia made interactive wristbands are you saying it took a massive company like Nokia to come up with this idea? well im sure if i ask a kid to draw up a Action man or G.I Joe figurine they will prob have a watch that works like a computer or something. So what your saying is Nokia R&D is about as good as some childs imagination.
Nobody made this idea its just obvious. Next you'll be saying everyone copied apple for making a touchscreen phone.
ramracer @ Jan 13th 2009 9:49PM
In an odd comparison, Nintendo has shown that you can go from great to last and great again. Sony very well could compete with apple and retake the PMP throne. Apple is not the end-all of PMPs. They may be king now, doesn't mean they will be forever.
Nick @ Jan 13th 2009 10:19PM
when did nintendo go from great to last??
Levi @ Jan 13th 2009 10:24PM
I doubt at this point that Sony, or anyone for that matter, could take the PMP throne from Apple. There is much better chance that Android, or newer tech like the Palm Pre or Tegra based phones could beat out the iPhone, and I believe there is also a better chance that the PS3 could retake second place... Apple has the PMP market so tight, that people call non-Apple PMP's iPods... like how people call tissues Kleenex, even though Kleenex is just a brand.
Yeah, I guess I just compared iPods to Kleenex.
finnith @ Jan 13th 2009 10:43PM
@Nick
They were "great" when they had the NES and the Super NES but the Gamecube was "last". Now they're first again with the Wii.
Garst @ Jan 14th 2009 1:38AM
@ramracer and finnith
First off, you can be last and still be great, but seriously, when was ever Nintendo last? There was one system that was "worse." You're forgetting that Sega was still in the fight for top console then. However, the Dreamcast failed miserably. So you can't say that Nintendo was ever last.
Will @ Jan 13th 2009 11:14PM
Ok this looks pretty cool and i was totally hyped when i first saw the whole "flexible screen" concept
But then i thought about it, and i couldn't come up with three practical reasons that i would need a flexible screen lol
william @ Jan 14th 2009 12:36AM
Need flexible screen?! Think of the pull-out screen computer on Red Planet they used while on the surface.. THAT would be a nice computer to see be made real with this flexible lcd stuff..
Slyk @ Jan 14th 2009 12:50AM
walkman, huh? that'd be REAL convenient on your wrist.
jack & headphone wires danging on your arm all day long...
spider-prime @ Jan 14th 2009 1:15AM
It would probably be a stereo bluetooth headset, would be my guess anyways.
babydill @ Jan 14th 2009 1:23AM
@ slyk
sorry mate but i'm pretty sure they wouldn't have wires for this......
damn you bluetooth, always taking my wires, oh wait thats a good thing
Patriks7 @ Jan 14th 2009 1:16AM
Come on Sony! We've seen enough concepts for this flexible OLED! Give us a product now! Even if we cant afford it :P
Dave Chappelle @ Jan 14th 2009 4:48AM
No if they do that then a whole bunch of asshole's on engadget will go berserk at the price so the best option for Sony is to release this thing in about 10 years when it costs them virtually nothing to make.
ed4heights @ Jan 14th 2009 1:20AM
Some of you daft muppets fail to realise that wearable and integrated tech, is a viable next step forward, and already coming to fruition in clunky items like Oakley's Thump. This tech will only get smaller and more robust. The fact that this particular product is a 'concept' only indicates a possible direction. Do we really have to drag you gypsies into this century? oh well, at least the gadgets we'll be carrying will free up our hands to give you a slap.
FILA @ Jan 14th 2009 1:51AM
this is cool, i like it, it probably sucks no battery on the OLED side of things, but i dont know if id wear it, its cool, but i think you would see more girls wear it, which is ashame cuz id probably consider it. would you?
Dave Chappelle @ Jan 14th 2009 4:41AM
I dont see why i would not wear it if they made it a bit bulkier and with darker colours so its more 'manly' lol.
RM @ Jan 14th 2009 3:10AM
Sony will always be light years ahead of Apple. They just suck at marketing their innovations.
Logan @ Jan 14th 2009 8:12AM
So it would use a bluetooth headset?
Alex @ Jan 14th 2009 9:20AM
I WANT ONE RIGHT NOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOW not in 5 years NOW !!! i don't care how much it is i'll buy it.It look's so futuristic
ed4heights @ Jan 15th 2009 1:38AM
@Logan
Yes, you gimp, it will have to have stereo bluetooth. Do you really think a cutting edge product like this (OLED flex, possible solar cells, wireless transfer etc) would have an ungainly mess of plastic wiring trailing out of it's arse - and into your head?
Man, if it had wires, I'd wrap them around your neck.
estoppel @ Jan 15th 2009 10:49PM
This looks pretty cool. Hope there's a manlier version of it.
